Radford was a football school in the 80's but since Coach Cormany's arrival we are mostly known for our basketball. A lot of that is because the players gravitate to our basketball program because Coach Cormany is a players coach. He is all about his players well being and his team enjoying playing the game. Don't get me wrong. Coach disciplines with structure but all the players love playing for the Bobcats. They know they will be pushed and have fun doing it. If Gate City has become a "basketball school" as you say, I am sure it began longer ago than you thought because players started realizing where they would compete and work hard and at the same time having fun and winning for a coach that they love playing for. You probably wont like hearing this but until that changes your school will probably continue to be a"basketball school" because players gravitate to people who enjoy what they do and enjoy having them there with them. Sounds like a lot of your best coaches are in the basketball program especially if your school is a "basketball school" now. Kids know who care about them not that the football coaches do not do so now. Kids are fickle though. As long as your basketball program stays hot and is very enthusiastic about the kids it will probably be your best program at Gate City. That is how it has been at Radford for a while and Cormany even encourages them to play football. I think that makes them want to play for him even more. The kids love a coach who supports them no matter what they do. Just a perspective from the outside for you to think about. Good luck to the Devils in future games though. All teams run through down cycles. Devils may be experiencing one now. Its your attitude though this cycle that will determine whether Gate City remains a "basketball school" or whether football makes a comeback. Just my thoughts on the matter.

I think the qualls kid is a awesome QB it sucks If we lost him but 10 back there will put another threat back there with is legs an he can throw. Was always the QB in 8th 9th grade. He isnt listed as the back up but i guarantee If Bailey is out he will be back there. An from what I just Hurd he is fine got a few text from coaches that he is ok.

Sorry for the rant above. Just don't like that stuff. I think your assessment EH31 is spot on. I think Union did dominate most of the game,especially on D. Offensively the play calling for the Bears was questionable IMO but I'm not a coach so I won't criticize. Richlands offense just couldn't seem to get anything going. The TD was a busted play that worked out. I was glad to see a classy,well played game and I agree these two will meet again. But I think Union is 2-3 tds better this year.

Congratulations Union. You guys have the better team. I sure hope Turner is ok. Good luck the rest of the way. I just have to ask one question. Why not get the ball to Mitchell more. He is Awesome! I'm sure Turner has his reasons but I would get him the ball. Well played Bears.

Random thoughts: * I was a little bummed that this didn't come down to the final play, but I guess that had to end sometime. Still a good game though. * Good crowd, but not as big as I thought it would be. Uncertain weather may have had something to do with that. *Thankful that the weather held out for the most part. On the way over from Kingsport it rained pretty hard a couple of times. *Thought at the half that Union was going to win unless they imploded with turnovers. They really just dominated both sides of the LOS, and probably should have been up 2-3 TD at the half. *Really surprised Richlands had so much difficulty moving the football, especially on the ground. *Also surprised that Richlands punted to Mitchell after angling their first punt out of bounds. I have no idea why any opponent would ever willingly put the football in his hands. *Didn't understand why Mance didn't go for 2 after the TD. The way Union was grinding the football, possessions were going to be limited.

I think it'll be a one-score game, but I think it'll be in the mid-teens to mid-20s.

Akers can recruit these kids to FB til the cows come home and unless he makes it fun to play for him they won't. Akers has to sell his program. I respect the kids playing FB now while the program is down. They play because they love GCHS football. As you say, kids like Ervin/McClung would be difference makers in FB. But you can't blame them for not wanting to especially with them being recruited fairly high in BB.

Gate City has the talent but that talent is focusing on basketball. If McClung and Ervin were in the backfield or at wide receiver Gate City wins a lot more games just off their athleticism. The success of the basketball program is hurting the football team. Akers needs to recruit those kids to football or they will continue to struggle.

5 - four lost fumbles and the interception. GC put the ball on the ground on several other occasions that they were able to recover. No other way to say it, it was just plain ugly.

Union very much dominated the first half. I felt like Richlands made good halftime adjustments and the even second half score indicated that. The Blues offense probably couldn't have played much worse in the first half, which didn't do the defense any favors. Obviously Graham isn't a team to take likely in a few weeks. but I feel Richlands at home is and will continue to be a tough out.

OK, T-town fans...dress warm for tonight's game. I left Tazewell @ 2PM and it was 72* on my car, I get home in Bluefield and it is 58* on my back porch with wind and mist. This is late October weather not Sept. 1st weather...

I just can't believe that some fans want a coach fired after one game. The main reason for the demise of Blue Devil Football is that for the past 5 or 6 seasons is defense, Gate City cannot gets others teams offense off the field. Offensively we have been adequate to above average. Until the defense is fixed nothing else is going to matter. Houseright was supposed to be the all-time whiz an D but it got progressively worse year after year, and no Darren Reed does not need to come home, unless you like seeing Will Muschamp impersonations. Reed will not last to many more years at Abingdon without Nick being there as his safety blanket, remember Wise Central,. Football is cyclical and GC is on a down swing but it will be back. Ask our friends at Lee High how changing coaches every fifteen minutes works out? Elements of the Gate City fan base are eerily similar to a fanbase 100 miles to the southwest in Knoxville.

I've watched Abingdon on film. Way more impressive than Richlands. They're going to run it right at us. They get great surge off the line of scrimmage with huge chunks of yardage each play. Darren Reed is playing old school Gate City Football at Abingdon this season. Watching the offensively I'm like "man that reminds me of the Gate City of old". I hate to say it, Abingdon is gonna beat us at our own game tomorrow. And as far as the Richlands games goes, if not for the pass we wouldn't of had those shots in the redzone we had. We don't have a true running back, we won't be successful without one. Spread teams out of the box and give Sallee a couple more seconds and then it opens up the run a little bit. Without a fast true RB we are not going to be able to do the quick hitters. We don't have a Joe Vaughn or Tyler Parks in the backfield.

I also didn't see any "trash talk" at the Beaver game. I believe this whole thing about Graham trash talking has been blown way out of proportion. Last year, before they would come out on to the field, they would be in a huddle and would chant a few times "come get some" then they would make their entrance. The only game I thought it got out of hand was the Richlands playoff game. With this being said, I am not a fan of this, but to classify it as trash talk and disrespect, and for it to be made such a big deal to some people blows my mind. This is football, there is going to be "trash talking" and I would bet my bottom dollar if Graham would have been losing last year instead of winning, not a word would have been said about there little pre game chant. No disrespect meant to you stu_bean, but if you are worried about Graham trash talking and being disrespectful, you are in for a surprise when yall play the Beavers this year.

Blacksburg will be introduced on its home field to Classification 4 football on Sep 22 when Salem comes to town. Blacksburg is the real deal, but I can assure you, Salem "ain't sceered."
