Please dont associate me with Mike Pereira. I was trying to avoid this post to be honest as long as no one asked for me. As for the play, from the clip shown I do believe it was an illegal blindside block. I would like a different angle just to be 100% sure but it does appear to meet the definition of the rule. Personally, I will admit that this has been one of the hardest rules I have had to adjust to. I missed one in a benefit game this year that I knew I should have called in retrospect. My crew had one in the game Friday night that was in a shared area that one of my crew members flagged and I didnt. I thought there may have been open hands initiate the block. He disagreed and we went with it. I would rather flag something I know 100% than something I am only 50% sure I saw. He felt 100% about it and that was good enough for me. I will also say, a flag or not wouldnt have changed the outcome of the young man being hurt so there is no need for anything like that to be brought up by anyone. That was a veteran crew who worked that game, which I had the pleasure of joining in a state semifinal game 2 seasons ago. We aren't perfect, but I will say we have some great people who are putting the time in to get better and represent this area well on the field, and hopefully not be a noticeable part of the game.6 points -

Could be worse. Could be like WVVA and have more coverage from teams that are an hour away instead of the teams in their own back yard... I understand some errors as it's easy to have a misunderstanding but the prediction completely had a mashup of facts. They seemed to know about Truck and Mookie but to confuse Graham as the Beavers, when they are normally predicting Graham on a weekly basis is a bit of a stretch for me. BTW Here is the copy and paste of it: Tazewell at Bluefield, W.Va., 7:30 p.m. Last meeting: Graham 48, Tazewell 12 (Sept. 2, 2016, in Tazewell, Va.) Bluefield leads this series by a 12-5 margin and should record another easy victory Thursday. … After enduring a rare losing record last season, the Beavers (4-0) are No. 1 in the West Virginia Class AA ratings. The stars for 32-year Bluefield head coach Fred Simon are senior halfback Mookie Collier and 218-pound senior fullback Jason “Truck” Edwards. Last season, Collier was a first-team all-state pick in football and basketball and a state champion in track and field. … Tazewell freshman Jamir Blevins has passed for 496 yards and eight touchdowns the past two weeks, but the Bulldogs are allowing 43 points per game. … Tazewell scored on a pair of passes from T.J. Kitts to speedy Mason Mullins last season in this game. Mullins will make another big play Thursday, but Bluefield will roll over the undermanned Bulldogs behind the “Truck.”2 points -

I hate this rule it's just football to me. If i was in the players shoes (well cleats) from VA High I would have probaly made the same block. The way they got it set up now that is a illegal block. I don't like the rule I hate that the kid got hurt he has been hurt for 2 years it's a shame such a good player.2 points -
It’s illegal. The new rule clearly states you have to lead with OPEN HANDS, and it is 100% clear that he did not. I don’t like the rule, but it’s 100% illegal. And there’s a certain official I know that agrees.2 points

Guys just watched the play and that is a football play and no he didn't even go to the ground. But in 2017 that is illegal. This is the rule " The definition of a blindside block established by the committee is “a block against an opponent other than the runner, who does not see th We may not like and it is too late now for the Mullins kide blocker approaching,” and now results in a 15-yard penalty. The committee stated that the blindside block “involves contact by a blocker against an opponent who, because of physical positioning and focus of concentration, is vulnerable to injury. Unless initiated with open hands, it is a foul for excessive and unnecessary contact when the block is forceful and outside of the free-blocking zone.” It is too late now for the Mullins kid and would not have changed the injury had a flag beeen thrown but it was illegal. Not cheap just illegal.2 points -

Hayes isn't bad. I didn't mean to come across as saying that every article by every writer stinks. I just meant that there aren't very many times where the coverage of local sports either.... A) does not have factual errors, in regards to Onceadog's post above, or B) doesn't show favoritism to the Tn. side. I understand that there are more readers/viewers on the Tn. side, but both the paper and the news station are located in Va. I can see how my post may come across as me dogging everyone to do with both media outlets. Maybe I should have said "For the most part". Some are better than others. They have all had their share of mistakes. If I had to pick the most reliable in my lifetime, it would be Sacco for me, as well.1 point -

I've always been a huge advocate of Tim Hayes' work. Tim knows his stuff and does his research. The History with Hayes article each Friday in the paper is probably the most looked forward to bit of reading I have each week. Sacco was excellent when he was here as well. I don't know much about Nate, except he's a hockey fan like myself, so that makes him cool in my book.1 point -

I was at that game. Our stands were full by 11am and we went to the concession stand and was told "we haven't even been to get buns for hot dogs yet because we didn't expect this many people". Then some of the players and cheerleaders left in the back of a truck to go to the store...lol. That day was interesting all the way around. Ole Tob (for those that remember him) was with me and I remember him saying "we have to be getting close because there's a bunch of red hats".....come to find out they were waiting for the Santa Train apparently.1 point -

You had 12 hours, and that's best that you can come up with? I still have yet to talk to a smart, Internet Tough Guy! If I could draw it out in crayon for you, I would, but since I can't, I'll do my best to explain "bitter" to you. I had a few different posters who disagreed with me. I didn't call any of them bitter. I called YOU bitter because of your particular response. We disagreed, that's fine! YOU had to take it a step further, and get personal. YOU were the only one who responded with more than just your opinion on the matter. YOU were the one who tried to say that YOU knew how I would feel if it were my son or one of our players. I call it as I see it, and if YOU would just take a couple of minutes and read the entire post, you would see that everything I just said is 100% true. YOU would also see why I STILL believe that was not an illegal hit. YOU or anyone else can disagree, that fine. It doesn't change my opinion in what the VHSL officials told me. You have 2 choices; We can continue discussing this or any other subject on this board in a civil manner, like adults, or..... YOU can keep getting personal, like a brave, strong, Keyboard Warrior(pun intended) and I'll just end it now. I have no intentions on continuing the latter. In the short time I've been here, I've seen GMan swing his Great Hammer of Justice. I'm not interested in being part of that. I just want to talk about local high school football with other adults. Make the choice!1 point -
That was the first thing that went through my mind. Mullins is unarguably the Warriors MVP. Why in the world would you have him in (at least on defense) at that point in the game?1 point

I didn't say it was true, I am just saying that is what I heard! I am not at all crazy. This has probably been the low point of Gate City fandoms social media lives! I understand and I'm pretty sure that any of us would be hard pressed to find someone who does like the rule. I have tried to leave my feeling for the rule, out of my opinion on it. That's why I asked the officials I know, because when this topic started being discussed, the description of the block in the initial argument of the block being illegal, started changing from that particular poster. Even with his changing of his description of the block, I had a little doubt creep in. I would have eaten a big plate of crow in front of everyone had even one of the officials had told me that it was illegal. Again, the only thing that really matters is that we keep the kid in our prayers. Tough way to end your high school football career.1 point -

Its a peel back block. The offensive player clearly leads with his shoulder blindsiding the defensive player. Had the offensive player led with hands it is legal. He did not, he led with his shoulder peeling back hitting the player. You can even see on the play that the offensive player has to come across the body of the defensive player so it was a blindside. I have no dog in the race. Not child at Va High. Dont live or root for Central. It clearly is a blind side block. You can tell because the offensive player had to fight to get his head across the defensive player meaning.....it came from behind or....THE BLINDSIDE.1 point -

Sorry man, I have to disagree. That is not an illegal block. I know 2 VHSL referees personally, and I sent them the very link that Union_Fan provided. Both confirmed that it does not fall under a "blindside" or "crack back" block that governing bodies of high school football across the country are trying to eliminate. I'm not being a smart-ass or trying to start something. I'm repeating the words of two officials. It was a physical play that had a bad outcome for Mullins. If the officials had told me it was illegal, I would have gladly apologized to Jonah58.1 point -

They never show all they have in scrimmages, it's been like that for years and somehow 5 new players come out of the woodworks everytime they play Giles it seems like. What videos that I've watched of Glenvar against Galax and Covington, their defense is legit.1 point -
I think Richlands stands a real chance in this game. Byrd doesn’t have any real speed or size, they’re just a good team with an exceptional RB. If Richlands can contain Basham and get something going on offense, the Blues could get back on track. Look for a special defense this week, also.1 point

It's got to be something bad to hold me back from a game, or the family schedules a vacation trip during one...I get tired of people bringing down on the team or town for that matter. Transfers really get at me when they transferred because they want the ring. I hate decals or magnets on cars but come football season I have my T dog displayed proudly on the car everywhere I go. I have my Dawgs shirt on every game day to work. I am Tazewell pride and proud and always will be. I instill it in my kids even though they are home schooled because it is still their team. I've been to miserable weather conditions to watch what I knew would be a beat down. I've been to the games when the team has quit and given up. The players need support no matter what so they can feel that the community is behind them. So far I have been pleased by traveling fans from Tazewell staying behind the Dogs no matter what. I'm not saying I am #1 biggest fan but of more than half the people out there I have a right to complain or comment on what I see unlike the ones that just show up for good weather and wins. I'm sure there are other fans that are the same way and every school needs as many as these as possible. I'll get off my pedestal now and quit preaching but as the saying goes from back in my high school days ONCE A BULLDOG ALWAYS A BULLDOG!1 point -
It was actually the 3rd round of the 4A West playoffs...Salem won 24-17 You may be thinking of Blacksburg who went from 3A last year to 4A this year. Also, Byrd does have fewer students than several Class AAA schools, but they are the smallest 4A school.1 point

Union has 240 plastic chair back seats that are reserved. The rest are up for grabs with the exception of the band and student sections. Not sure about Appalachia, but PV had a reserved section going back to at least the mid 80s. I know that Richlands does as well. Not sure about anyone else. Union's only apply to the 5 regular season home games.1 point

Has anyone thought about this? The kids playing on the team for GATE CITY now started football in the feeder programs(peanut,8th grade ,jv ball)under HOUSRIGHT AND COMPANY.PHIL ROBBINS gave an interview once about the success at POWELL VALLEY,he stated that one reason that he took the job was , they had just won state in 1982,and they had talent coming back but the most important thing was they had a great peanut league .I don't know anything about the feeder programs there but i know that TRAVIS TURNER spends time with our small kids watching them and insuring that they run the same plays in peanut as they do for UNION, and that the proper techniques are used even at 8 years old.1 point
