I’m not too many years removed from the game, but if I known what I know now about CTE and other head injuries caused by football, i’d still play the the great game. We take risks everyday when we jump in a metal shell and drive 50-60mph to work. Yes, it worries me about the chances of brain issues later on in life, but if that’s God’s plan for me, then that’s how it’s supposed to be. Football taught me to be on time, listen to my boss, do my job to best of my ability, how to take orders, and how to get back up when I got knocked down. No other American sport teaches young men the lessons that football does when coached right. I’d do it all over again, 100% no doubt about it!2 points -

New Sporting Complex for Bluefield VA
JDHoss reacted to Liam McPoyle for a topic
I'm no construction expert, but Sullivan County, TN has budgeted only $4.8 million to construct the following for West Ridge HS: a new football field with grandstands a track tennis courts with bleachers a baseball field a softball field a soccer field and a support building A similar complex at William Fleming was $8 million back in 2010. Bluefield is projecting $6 million for its single-field stadium. I'm envisioning West Ridge with a cinder track, wooden bleachers, tennis court lines painted on the parking lot, and a shop class constructed field house.1 point -

They're now Virginia cars at DB. The kids are giving effort. It's not on the kids. It starts at the top and works its way down. This is not a "down cycle" type of deal. THAT'S the frustrating part.1 point

I recall, while working at Marion as an assistant in the late 90's that the head baseball coach, went with Blue as a dominant color with red trim. The A.D. would not allow us to wear those uniforms, and we had to resort to the old uniforms. An entire set of uniforms were handed out and given away as the result of this decision.1 point -
It's not basketball that's having a negative effect on the program. Several kids either not playing or transferred. The problem lies within the program at the top.1 point

Union/Va High Benefit Game
Bearcat Dad reacted to Union_Fan for a topic
Definitely improvement on D from the Elizabethton scrimmage last week. Run game looks very strong. Took a bit for Turner to get loose once they started passing. My biggest concern will be depth on the D line(tackles and ends both). While the 1's were in, it was nearly impenetrable, but as they rotated in and out some lineups worked and some didn't. Lot of kids going both ways. Hopefully, we can build some depth as the season progresses. Va High has several good athletes. The QB may surprise a few people with his scrambling ability. They were bigger on the line than I remember from last year. I was expecting/hoping them to pass more. Thought it would be another good test for a young secondary. You can't always tell how good a team is from a scrimmage, but you can certainly tell how bad they are. And neither of these teams are going to have a bad season!1 point -
Union/Va High Benefit Game

VHS has a ton of speed at QB, and both backs (2 and 20) are more physical than you realize but are also burners. Union didn't show much at all, probably didn't run 10 different plays with the actual 1s and started subbing as early as late 1st Q with the all the 2s playing most of second half after opening drive of third quarter. Physically on offense, it's still there. Jenkins, Polier and Stidham all can pound the rock and Jenkins can go 30-40 yards in a blink, but Union ran the spread a lot after the first quarter. Turner had two beautiful throws, the corner Falin caught early and the go route they barely missed on, but also a couple misthrows. But he looked healthy and mobile which is truly important. The throws will come, it's just good to see him healthy and moving. On defense, Unions 1s tackles well in the open field aside from a couple mistakes. But give VHS credit, the athletes were very quick and reactive and linebackers like 2 and 54 were all over the field. 21 was in on a lot of plays but unfortunately for him ended up on a potential Jenkins highlight reel after a NASTY stiff arm. Exciting finish, Bear backups score with 30 seconds left to finish ahead of scoreboard, VHS ran out of time after getting within the 20ish as time expired. 24-20 was final score, the game scoreboard showed 24-23 but once people actually see scoring plays, it was 24-20. But that mattered very little as I think both teams have a lot of positives coming out of tonight but also holes to work on. Union is finding their rotation and players new on defense getting adjusted, VHS working on winning at the LOS and shedding blocks. Don't go to Bristol and expect an easy win. In a regular season game, I'd favor Union by 14ish, maybe less maybe a tad more, but the Bearcats will be alive come playoff time.1 point -

I’m with everyone above. Well played game. Physically Union was the better team. I’m sure, as mentioned above, neither team showed all they had to offer. I like our run game and I think our passing game will surprise some teams. Turner made some nice throws, especially on the double out to Falin on the sideline to pick up a big first down. That throw and catch rivals any you’ll see all season long. Unions defense looked much better this week compared to the Elizabethton game. All in all a good showing for both teams. They both should be ready for a solid season.1 point -

VHS has some really good athletes. The hype about them is well deserved. I didn’t see Union last week so this was my first time of the year, I was pleasantly surprised. The running game is still there and strong, especially out of the T. The passing game will come with more experience and getting guys in a rhythm. The defense has a chance to be very good aswell, the D line is definitely a strength.1 point -

Union/Va High Benefit Game
SW_VA_boy reacted to Bearcat Dad for a topic
This was a great battle, to be so early in the season. Union was a little better up front than VHS, and both teams were vanilla in their playcalling, as expected, but I'm very pleased in VHS overall. Union's lines are huge. Turner was kept in check, with the exception of a great scramble conversion on 3rd and long, in the 3rd quarter. The Bears have a pretty good stable of running backs. There was a ton of physical play by both sides. I really hope that this matchup happens down the road. These were 2, well coached and hungry teams. VHS has some things to clean up, but most teams do at this point.1 point -

I agree that GW should be ranked on athleticism alone. My guess is that was an oversight. As far Chilhowie, they should have beaten GW last year. QB Cale was out and the Warriors tend to let the Maroons get in their heads. Chilhowie will easily payback my Hurricanes, avenge their loss to GW, and will have an epic battle with Virginia High. Warriors have too many weapons/experience to be stopped by JIB, Grundy, Hurley, etc.. I think CHS will be 12-1 when they host Galax in the semis.1 point -
Hell, Grundy couldn't get past Burton in the first round . What makes you think they had anything for Chilhowie?1 point

Blues up 14-0 at half. Richlands has only had the ball 3 real times. Two drives for a TD (Moir to Cole both times) and the 3rd was a 30 yard pass play that ended in a fumble. They also got the ball with 20 seconds left in the half. Grundy probably has at least 13-15 minutes of possession. Just grinding it out on the ground and running clock. Fizer is a workhorse. Probably already has 20+ carries. Richlands needs to work on the line. Getting pushed around on offense.1 point -

It has frightened me, I wont lie. But The risk of injury is in every sports. I think I may have had one more concussion in football than i did in soccer. And elbow problems from baseball still bother me to this day. The rules against the old-fashioned tactics have helped the game from an injury standpoint, but sacrificed some of the sanctity of the traditional ways. The glory of football is that you don't necessarily have to be a player to contribute. Look at you with the podcast. It's awesome! I follow it to a tee and I have heard you mention many times that you didn't even play (and I even overlook your contractual obligation to oppose anything Kelly Green lol). People will always continue to follow football and its incredible integration into our way of life. As far as me as a parent and if I had a son, I would make sure that I coached him the right way to tackle and monitor his health very closely but i wouldn't essentially hold him out from playing altogether. Every lesson i learned and apply to life was learned on the football field, more so Mon-Thurs and Sat-Sun. Friday nights were times to shine but the other days taught you about life.1 point
