That's it...you are done for a while...

Been lifting your son in prayer. Praying for complete recovery. In my immediate family two young members were diagnosed with cancer within a 2 week period. It literally knocks you off your feet, but my trust in God and the prayers of so many have been a comfort. Knowing the board has been covering your family and Aaron at this time with prayers means a lot. Your heartfelt posts says it all.

Thanks again to everyone for their kind words. Aaron was diagnosed with a pretty severe concussion. We did receive great news though. Aaron was born with what’s called a Porencephalic Cyst on his brain. Doctors have called him a “Wonder Kid” because an overwhelming majority of kids that are born with this affliction have Cerebral Palsy and generally do not live past their early 20s. They usually have really bad health issues their entire lives. Not only has Aaron been blessed with great health, but has been able to be a standout athlete and is being recruited by some colleges in both baseball and football. He was diagnosed with the concussion, but the doctor said that there was no change with his lesion. The power of prayer really works! We have been contacted by so many coaches, players, and parents from teams all over the region, and prayers were even asked for during the Tennessee High football game radio broadcast. There are too many to thank individually, so again, his mother and I would like to thank everyone in our SWVA football family. He has had a good weekend and hopes to be back on the field soon. Congratulations to the Team!! It was a nice thought to believe Coach Akers' former kicking expertise had anything to do with the exceptional pressure packed field goal to win the game. But, it was the Team who gave Gate City the chance to win at the end. Another no quit performance by the Gate City Team on the road. It looked bleak again when Lee High completed a 72 yard touchdown pass play with 2:43 left to go and taking the momentum with the game tying two point conversation. However, the no quit Blue Devils moved the length of the field with only one timeout with a combination of running and passing plays putting them in a position to win with a super kick at the end with only one second on the clock. Both the offense and defense overall played well. The Team had 309 yards of offense with 239 yards of rushing along with 19 first downs and only one punt.

Anybody who thinks that Bluefield football is sub-par is an idiot. I would put Bluefield up against any team their size or bigger(2A and most of 3A) in VA, pretty much on a yearly basis and put good money on Bluefield. For somebody to say the things they did after the results of one game is foolish. It only makes them look like somebody who doesn't know what in the heck they are talking about.

To add to that, legendary Bluefield and Graham coaches John Chamara and Glen Carlock were assistants under Gainer at Bluefield. Chamara became head coach after Gainer left, and coach Carlock eventually became head coach at Graham and modeled Graham’s program after Bluefields. Some other really successful coaches in southwest Virginia coached under Gainer, and with Chamara and Carlock as well, maybe Tazewell’s coach Litz?, and one of Gate City’s good coaches? More than a few of the historically good programs of southwest Virginia, and at least 1 in the Roanoke area, were built and influenced by products of or having ties with Bluefield’s program. So instead of 2 vhsl hall of fame coaches coming to Bluefield and starting WV football, a coach from Bluefield WV actually had a big part in building the success and physical style of football in SWVA that many on this site are deservingly proud of. That couldn’t be more ironic to those putting Wv football or more specifically Bluefield down. I’m not certain the reason for the underlying animosity towards the Beavers and WV football by some, but personally I’ve always known Bluefield fans to enjoy seeing Graham and Richlands and any other Va teams from the region do well. I’d enjoy seeing Tazewell do well too. To the haters though it’s fair to ask how many of their teams were ever nationally ranked? Maybe a few, idk. Although it was a different era, the AAA Bluefield teams of the ‘60s and 70’s were no joke. They could play with the best teams from any surrounding state. That started tapering down some in the 80s, as numbers decreased. My sophomore year at Bluefield in ‘81 under Chamara, our team was 3-6 and had the first losing season in decades, and the last game was against a 9-0 AAA Tennessee team ranked 2nd or 3rd in tn and Bluefield won convincingly 21-7. A couple of years before that Bluefield tied a really big and good Maryland team, Dematha, if I recall. 3-3. Bluefield’s played some of the better teams at the time from 5 different states outside of WV, Va, Maryland, Tn, Ky and Nc. They have a lot to be proud of. I saw Bluefield for the first time Friday, and saw 2 of their games last year, to be honest I’m not certain they’re better than last year, maybe, idk, but they’re really good and certainly good enough to repeat in AA. But I’ve read about them possibly being 1 of the best teams in Bluefield’s history and 1 thing is certain, at least in my mind, this isn’t the best Bluefield team ever, and not sure they’re as good as a few of the teams from the 90s or 2000s. Maybe I haven’t seen them enough though. But they are really good, and have the opportunity to make history, and have 60 some years of Bluefield players and generations of faithful cheering them on, and coach Simon, also a Bluefield product who played under coach Chamara and the Gainer influence has done well at Bluefield. Say what you will about Bluefield or WV football, personally I respect every program, but as a Bluefield fan I don’t envy any other.

I never stated that. The only thing I ever posted about that game was that if didn’t think LB would hold Bluefield to 6 points at home. That hot take has me on the hook for thousands of frostys

I have taken care of one of them for a while but I'm putting it on the rest of you good posters to reign in the few idiots that make you look bad. A foolish post that was derogatory towards Bluefield and WV football warrants a truthful response, so I’m just going to going post an accurate story about Beaver history from online. Merille Gainer “Football Coach. Thru the 1960s he headed a number of nationally ranked high school teams. A 1940 graduate from Shepherd College, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II prior to starting a long coaching career. He first gained renown at Big Creek High School in War, West Virginia but earned a national reputation at Bluefield High School in Bluefield, West Virginia. Taking over a chronically losing program in 1959, he won a state championship; over nine seasons, his teams had a record of 87-6-1 and won four Class AAA state titles, with three of the losses and the tie coming in 1963. During his Bluefield years he coached several nationally ranked teams and turned down offers from a number of major colleges. Following the Beavers' fourth championship in 1967, Coach Gainer retired, though his retirement was to be short-lived as he accepted an offer from Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, Virginia in 1969. The school had won one game in the previous three seasons but Coach Gainer immediately had them winning and the Patriots captured the Virginia state championship in 1973. The coach retired for good in 1978 but over the years was a highly sought after instructor for coaching seminars throughout the country. He was inducted into the National High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 1979 and the West Virginia Sports Writers Hall of Fame in 1986. Coach Gainer was the high school coach of "Rocket Boy" Homer Hickam at Big Creek and was portrayed in the movie "October Sky" by David Copeland. Today the stadium at Patrick Henry High School carries his name.

I grew up in WV and have followed it for years. Martinsburg beat Sherando( VA) by 3 last year. Their closest game. Sherando got pasted by 40 by Salem. I have followed WV through the AA CK dominance of the 80's , great South Charleston teams and even private Wheeling Centrals dominance . And yes, Bluefield has great tradition and several titles at different classes. Being at the game last night reinforced my opinion. I think you stated Bluefield was way better , faster , with a bigger line than LB have seen all year. LB scrimmaged VA 6A Thomas Dale preseason with 6 D1 kids just on the defensive side and won by 7.

Found an interesting article in the July 1999 edition of The Bluefield Gazette. Seems Appalachia’s Tom Tuner and Powell Valley’s Phil Robbin we’re invited to Bluefield to be speakers at a high school football coaches clinic. Both coaches fell ill with stomach problems and ended up taking many 💩 in town. And just like that, Wv high school football was born! Who knew that the fecal matter of two vhsl hall of game coaches was enough to bring life to Wv high school football. 😂

I think a coach should get 4 or 5. years unless he has done something criminal. Even at that the board will judge because that is what they ar elected to do. Now before any fans with coaches that they think don’t cut the mustard get aggravated, ask yourself how would I do if I was coaching this same team? Stephen James who was at Fort Chiswell a few years back took 6 years to turn it in the right direction and that included 12 years of bad football before him.

Now that Richlands has softened the blow, maybe it won't be so bad for us. Lol

GC is as close to a state title in 19 as anyone else in SWVA. 🤷🏼‍♂️

This. Homecoming. A parade before the game. It finally turned cold and the fans weren’t into the game. And the fact that I’m sure they were looking ahead to Graham a little bit. They played fine. Just needed some time to wake up and realize they still had to play the game.

Sometimes even blind squirrels find nuts. 😂

Galax’s field is being used for 3-7 grade football today. Carroll had to play at 6 and don’t know if Carroll or Giles wanted that.

Richlands was perfectly normal tonight. It was homecoming, and the guys got focused after halftime. I told a friend 35-7... not a blowout, but a good game.

The last time Marion won at Ernie Hicks, Ernie Hicks was still alive.

Before the Kavanaugh hearings, the Democrats were poised for a big win in the House and a possible shot at the Senate. They overplayed their hand and fired-up the GOP base. The Democrats will still win the House but by a slimmer margin than before. They have virtually no shot at the Senate.
