  1. Fixing the scoreboard should be done ASAP. That's shameful honestly. GC has won too many games to be a school who's damn scoreboard doesn't even work right.

  2. Doubt that. I hate DB! I’d support him and hope things turn out better than the last one. I’ll give anyone their fair chance. As I did Akers, but it doesn’t take me long to be able to judge if a coach is a good fit or if he knows what he is doing. I’ll support the man, whoever it may be. Until given reason not to. The lack of respect for the kids and the assistants along with their opinions on things during games or during practice did it for me. I had a close connection that played for Akers, I heard things he said and did that I lost ALL respect for him. People can say what they want about Akers and blah blah. But I believe this kid and his close friends I got to talk with about him. We need someone who the kids are going to buy into and respect. That’s gotta be the first order of business. 1) Respect the pride and tradition 2) Establish discipline 3) Believe in the kids 4) TEACH football 5) Be very involved in the LL program and promote it different ways, social media, trips with varsity players/coaches, cheerleaders and even the mascot to the elementary schools to convince kids to play, make the uniforms “COOL” so kids want to play. Make it worth playing. Give everyone a bunch of time to sign up. Stop the stacking of teams, that I hear has been happening. Make winning the season have a reward, get rid of the “participation trophy”. 6) Be the man you want the kids to grow up to be. Respect and trust the players and your assistant coaches. And you’ll earn yours. And bonus 7) Trash the ugly uniforms Akers wasted money on and get some blue helmets. LED scoreboard and hire someone to pressure wash the stadium and paint! It looks awful! i don’t expect much...

    Akers Out at GC?

Never said it was bad, just said he didn't exactly burn it up...the results show that to be true. Besides the PV win in 1999, he didn't beat hardly anyone he shouldn't have beaten on paper. In his 3 playoff games at Kelly, he was 0-3 and the cumulative score was 97-13 with 2 shutouts...that comes out to an average of roughly 32-4.

  4. I agree defensively I think it will be a chess match by both teams, but offensively Ridgeview will run the same things over and over. If you can line up and stop them you will beat them because they won't change and there will be no creativity.

  12. Ridgeview does a great job of getting both backs, Adkins and Sexton, involved in the passing game. It's not just screens and swings either, both backs (at least against Union) were running routes like slants and out routes, angle routes to the middle and even more complex route trees. maybe they won't use those against Richlands, but they've shown they can. Sexton killed Union on third down out of the backfield or lined up in the slot.

  13. I would wager you are white, am I correct? I am as well. And with that being true, it's not for us to decide what another ethnicity believes to be derogatory or racist. As a society, we should be trying to come together and remove all the bias and the hate. If that means some words go the way of the dodo, that's the price of progress. You seem like a decent dude, and I'm sure there's not any sort of intent if you called Norton the older name, but can you see where someone who isn't white being sensitive to a name like the Black Raiders?

  14. That’s the ‘ole “Bo Out.” Similar to a box out, but with an elbow to the face.

    Akers Out at GC?

Not even making that comparison...just saying the nostalgia over Saunders is overblown. Take into account that during his tenure at Kelly he was 5-14 vs district teams with winning records. (Wins were PV 99, Pound 00, Appy 01, Coeburn 01, Clintwood 02...that's it).

  17. Considering J.J. Kelly had averaged 1 win a year for the previous 4 years before he arrived and then making 3 playoff appearances after his arrival is not bad.

    Graham vs Union

The kicking game has been good for Union all season. I agree that coverage on kickoffs has been weak lately, I think Falin getting a high % of touchbacks has kept that from being a problem. He’s punted really well too. I’d love to see Jenkins more confident in fair catching punts to help field position. If we are just going to let every punt bounce I’d love to see Union bring more pressure. There’s been several poor snaps that punters have had time to gather up and kick because there’s no rush on the punter.

  21. It IS possible to win at Wise. Historically, Wise/JJ Kelly was not a barren wasteland of football success. They had a respectable .540 winning percentage The Indians battled with Cummins' Green Wave teams in the '70s for LPD Crowns. JJK even won state in '81. Stecker, Sauders, and Salyers all found some success coaching there. But the problem was when JJK had bad years, they were REALLY bad, and that is what most people tend to remember. source: fourseasonsfootball.com

    Akers Out at GC?

As far as coaches helping in weight lifting. What happened to kids going to the weight room and lifting by themselves. Gotta have a little want to about yourself to want to get better, coaches cant hold your hand all the time. I say clean house from top to bottom in the football program and bring someone in who can start his own program and run it the way he wants it and try and turn things around. Seems like coaches around here just keep getting shuffled around.......

  23. That’s great but coaches are measured on wins and losses not on hugs and telling kids everything is going to be alright.

  24. I would like Abingdon to win but I'm not sure how they accomplish that against LB. I've seen Abingdon play and Bluefield. If Bluefield didn't beat LB, I don't believe Abingdon will. With that said, it's the playoffs and nothing is a given. I give kudos to Abingdon's head coach coming on board with the season nearly starting and getting them to this point.

  26. If we considered 1A only, I think a strong argument could also be made for Chilhowie's Zack Cale (QB, DB) and Greg Sanchez (RB, DB).

  27. Graham's defense struggled at the beginning of the season. As the season has progressed they seem to be clicking on all cylinders. They all seem to get to the ball fast and tackling isn't an issue. I don't know much about the two running backs that Union has or their offensive line to say one way or the other as to which team has the edge. #34 for Graham is a lot of fun to watch. He's small but he absolutely works his tail off. Kid gives 110% EVERY SINGLE PLAY no matter what. They rotate him in and out on defense throughout the game. Kids like him is what HS football is all about. Dedicated and very much a hard worker.

    Mac McClung

Ummm....I've yet to see anyone on this board who isn't pumped for Mac? I think we are all hoping he helps take them back to being a power...so not sure what the world you're talking about....Also, you haven't been here a year. You signed up for the board an hour ago as of this post.

  30. I cant take anyone seriously who doesn't even have Graham in their Top 10 in 2A.....aside from having GC at 8. And I'm aware this particular OP can never be taken seriously anyhow. I think the GMen will be very solid again this year. Graham was no doubt the 2nd best team from VA that GC faced all year. Radford was very good.....but not quite on Grahams level IMO. If Graham had beat GC in the rematch they would have been your 2A champs. Having Radford as a favorite to win it all is understandable as they didnt lose anyone off last years team. Wouldn't be surprised to see them win it again. GC obviously lost alot of offensive firepower with McClung being gone, but I think this GC team will be able to score at will and it should be more evenly spread out. Also this team should be very good defensively with the addition of the JV guys who bring the heat....will be much more depth to interchange guys out and keep fresh legs. Rebounding should be much improved as well. Will be a much different looking team.....Not saying better but they will be solid. GC beating Western Albemarle, Northside, and Jefferson Forest just a few weeks ago tells me all I needed to know about this team before getting to even see them play together without Mac. I think Martinsville will be in the thick of things again this year. Might be another year out but will be hard to beat nonetheless like they always are. DR I'm sure has a team full of athletes as usual but I feel like Mavahi is the better of those two teams. Dont think I'd have DR in my Top 5 right now. No disrespect....but Wise Central wont be much of a factor now after losing McAmis to an ACL tear. I would offer up Union as another team representing SWVA as Top 10 material...I think they will be very solid this year getting back Wes Slagle. I can't offer any thoughts on East Rock, Goochland, or Appo since I didn't know much about them last year. Not sure what all they have returning.
