I can’t go on record as much in this realm, but I will say that if the School Board closes TCCTC, it will be the worst mistake that body has ever made. We have a population here that is PERFECT for vocational training, and taking that away would be utterly devastating, to put it very kindly. We don’t have the demographics to be a white-collar job mill. We have the demographics for practical training, and it saddens me to see just how much it’s already been placed on the back-burner.

    Football Officiating

If I wanted the kind of abuse that referees take, such as yelled at, spit on, criticized on everything, and even have my ancestry questioned, I would just have my mother-in-law move in.

    Union vs Gate City

There seems to be one fanbase per year that exposes itself for being knuckleheads. Hurley was the program last year. Gate City is on the verge of asking Hurley to hold its beer.

ME! Ha. I'm the new sports intern at WVVA from May-late July. If all goes well, you'll get to see my ugly mug all over your TV screens. I apologize in advance, and I'm not responsible for any damages that come from your screen busting when my face appears. Lmao. In all seriousness, I'm very excited for this opportunity.

    Score updates - 9/29/17

I am so impressed with Tazewell's grit and resolve this year. I had this team pegged as an 0-10 team for sure, but that team isn't quitting. They may not make the playoffs but you have to come away with respect.

    Richlands at William Byrd

Also, was very happy to see our boys have the NS stickers on their helmets, our coaches had the NS on their polos and the cheerleaders had purple ribbons in their hair. Byrd lost a senior girl, Nala Saunders, on Wednesday morning suddenly and purple was her favorite color. So I was really happy to see us honor her last night. Also, I thought it was very classy for the Blues to get to the 2 yard line with 1 minute left and Byrd only having one timeout and instead and scoring and going up 13, we took a knee at the 2 to leave it a 6 point win. Felt like that was a good move, especially given the fact that Byrd was playing for NS.

To be honest, that is what I wanted my original website to be like but I didn't have the time to put in the effort to do all that...that's how it ended up as a forum only. Now, these guys have stepped up and have done a tremendous job in gathering information and putting it out there. I will continue to be here, and hopefully, they'll continue doing what they are doing and these three sites will be the best you can find in Southwest VA and Southern WV. I also have to give a ton of credit to VHSLhelper...what he does is also a tremendous addendum to everything that is here now!

    Old Richlands controversy

Did they change after each play or each series? Or did the offensive team get the cleats while the other team played in socks? Or was it the defensive team that wore the cleats? Did they change by position? That would suck if you were a wide receiver who wore a size 9 and the opposing wide receiver wore a size 13. And this begs the question, why couldn’t Richlands or Salem afford their own cleats? Why did they have to wear the same cleats? And how in the hell did one of these teams make the playoffs playing an entire season without cleats? This needs to be an entire podcast episode, like a 30for30 or something

Congrats to Jason "Truck" Edwards. Per his Twitter he's going to the University of Pittsburgh to play football! I'm excited for him and to watch him continue his football career at a Power five school.

I have spent time in virtually every corner of Virginia, both professionally and socially. The lack of awareness by many outside SWVA concerning anything involving SWVA is astounding. I've said it before, folks in other parts of the state will send their kids to Virginia Tech but never bother to explore the communities southwest of Blacksburg. Hence, the feeling in SWVA that most Virginians not from SWVA believe the state stops at Exit 118 along I-77. I once had a coworker argue and ultimately lose a bet to me that Oak Hill Academy was located in Tennessee. He couldn't fathom anything in Virginia being south or west of Blacksburg. Just this Monday, a "headhunter" contacted me on Linkedin, gauging my interest in a career move to the Norfolk area. I politely told her I live well over 300 miles from Norfolk and that's as close as I will ever live to Norfolk! She couldn't understand why "anyone would chose to live in that part of Virginia who had options". The quoted text is taken directly from her email to me. She was dumbfounded that I would chose to stay in "that part of Virginia", meaning SWVA, when I had opportunities in Norfolk. In my mind, this clearly shows a bias the rest of the state harbors toward SWVA. And many have never even been to SWVA! So, it should be no surprise that anyone from "Central VA all day" can't have an objective and unbiased opinion of our little slice of heaven! SWVA respects one another in a way other parts of Virginia cannot understand. When our school is knocked out of the playoffs, we show up in droves to support our neighbors in their quest to reach "states". What a bunch of hillbilly rednecks we must be to support our neighbors! But it's this mindset that makes living and raising children in SWVA so rewarding. We can have pride in our community and show similar pride and support for a neighboring community without our community believing us to be disloyal. We may fuss among ourselves from time to time but when push comes to shove, we have each others backs. I'll step down from my soapbox now!

All things being equal, I think Central/GC and Tazewell/Grundy determine the #1 seed. Even if Richlands loses to Va High. Sleeper games are Princeton/Brooke and Mo West/Bearden. The following is based on Central over GC, Va High over Richlands, Grundy over Tazewell, Princeton over Greenbrier, Brooke over Princeton, and Grayson losing their last 2. A tie for #1 between Union/Graham would go to Union for "best overall record". A tie between Union/Marion would come down to "highest average rating of all opponents". 1.) Union 10-0 268 26.8 2.) Graham 9-1 268 26.8 3.) Ridgeview 9-1 262 26.2 4.) Marion 9-1 249 24.9 5.) Va High 7-3 232 23.2 6.) Lee 6-4 211 21.1 7.) Battle, John 5-5 190 19 8.) Central-Wise 3-7 176 17.6 8.) Hello Everyone. Been reading the board for a while, but joined last night. My name is Bob and I graduated from Lee in 2000 and now living in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. I've enjoyed reading and keeping up with all the local teams. Living so far away I probably wont post as much, but thought I would introduce myself. Bob

It may not mean as much in far SWVA as it does in this area. I would have loved for my former high school coach and mentor, Fred Jennings, to have been interviewed for the podcast series Ryan is putting together. You guys would have loved listening to him as much as I have for the past 40 years. He passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86. I would love for more people to hear his stories. For example, at one point just following WWII, four of his older brothers were in the starting five of the Lees-McRae Bobcat basketball team. All five starters were graduates of Fries High School and had fought in WWII. They postponed completion of high school to serve their country, completed high school upon their return, all became college graduates and high achievers in life. It was a different time and they were symbolic of "The Greatest Generation"! Fred was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and lost 70% of his hearing in the process. He was awarded the Silver Star for his efforts. Fred attended every single Virginia Tech home football game from 1958 through 2016, not missing a single one. He was honored on the field for his contributions to the university on several occasions. Fred built a full-court basketball court and Olympic sized pool at his home to keep "his kids" (us) out of trouble. He never had children of his own but had hundreds he taught and coached through the years. He was my baseball coach, football coach, Algebra teacher, mentor and friend. For most of the past 11 years, Fred would come to my office every few months and just talk...for hours. His wife passed away a few years ago and he hasn't been the same. He is, in all honesty, the single greatest influence on my life. He took an interest in me when I was 4 years old, taught me the value of life and passed his love of math on to me. He is the reason my username on this board, Twitter and Instagram handles will never change. He is partially responsible for the moniker. His brother, Allen "Birddog" Jennings was a teacher and coach at Virginia High in the 60's. He wrote a fabulous book several years ago called "My Day to Wear the Underwear". Birddog passed away March 8th at the age of 92. Rest in peace Mr. Jennings. You were loved and will be missed.

    State Semi-Finals (3/6/18)

What a fantastic game. Graham just dug far too deep a hole for itself with the 12 first half turnovers, and those extra possessions were really the story of the game. Proud as a peach of how the G-Men fought and clawed all season long, and we’ll always have that shocker at UVA-Wise. Now, Gate City, the first 29 games mean nothing without victory in the 30th. Take care of business at the Siegel Center Friday. There’s a lot of demons to be exorcised for this whole region in boys’ basketball. Do it.
