  1. Union moved the ball pretty well against Richlands. They actually had a few more total yards than Richlands. Almost even. The papers that I have looked at today also shows Union with more first downs than Richlands. So they moved the ball pretty well.
  2. The Bears early mistakes allowed the GreenWave to lead early 14-0. Just like Clintwood's late mistakes allowed Union back in it as you said and take over the lead. Mistakes are mistakes no matter who makes them and when they're made. All depends if you can recover from them or not. The Bears did that, the GreenWave did that. But it all evened out for a game with two good teams which was decided by two points. Union made mistakes early, Clintwood made them late. #5 makes it sound as though Union has nothing, but take away the mistakes on both sides and I believe it still would have been a close two point ball game.
  3. I guess greenwavefan#5 has nothing to say......#5, did Richlands give Union a win like Union gave Clintwood a win?
  4. Union is actually located in Big Stone Gap, VA.
  5. greatwhitemp36, Based on the AA and A comment, where do you get your enrollment numbers? If I'm not mistaken Lee High and Richlands have the highest enrollments of all the VA schools in our general area. Union does not have a higher enrollment than Richlands.
  6. After seeing this football game live the sweet sixteen poll should definitely have Union right behind Richlands. I haven't seen Christiansburg play, but if they remain #1 and Richlands is #2 then Union should definitely be #3. Yes, they have a loss but this one loss team should be at #3.
  7. Powell Valley's helmet from 86-88 is wrong on the hogo website. The stripes on the middle of the helmet were not white on the outside and red in the middle. The stripes were red on the outside and white in the middle. I was on the team during those years and we all had to place the decals on the helmets ourselves every year. I don't ever recall the red in the middle and white on the outside. It could have been at some time, but definitely not during 86-88. The 86-88 helmet was also the 85 (2nd state title) helmet.
  8. It's been a while since I've been on the VHSL website. Thanks for the info.
  9. Shouldn't PV get in if they win out and finish 5-5. Right now PV, JI Burton, and Clintwood have one district loss each. With PV having a win against JI Burton and JI Burton beating Clintwood. Although Clintwood beat PV doesn't PV win the LPD and get in as a district champion since they beat Burton head to head and Burton beat Clintwood? Is there a tie breaker to be district champion or is there still the co-champion thing? Someone clue me in as to how the district champion would work here............
  10. Appalachia. Like playing on a graveled driveway.
  11. Best atmosphere games: 2003 gate city vs. Powell valley at bullitt park in big stone gap and 2004 powell valley vs. Gate city at legion field in gate city.
  12. Just looked at Elizabethton's schedule and didn't see Sullivan South on there.
  13. I'm convinced that the best high school football team in this entire region this season is Elizabethton. I know that's a Tennessee school and this is a Southwest Virginia forum, but my goodness that team is good!!! They absolutely killed Sullivan North last night and a week or two ago they beat Greeneville which should have won their game against Sullivan South. I've not looked at their remaining schedule to see when they play South. It will be a great game, but right now I'm gonna say Elizabethton could possibly beat them by 2 touchdowns. Head Coach Shawn Witten is doing an awesome job there.
  14. Yep, they have always been like that.
  15. As of 9-18-09 the VHSL website shows Clintwood in Division 2. Did the petition to stay in Division 1 go through? Just wondering. If so, the website hasn't been updated.
  16. Yep, they have always been like that.

    Giles

I agree. Everybody goes through tough times and bad seasons. I see Giles in that situation right now.
  18. Sullivan South beats Gate City 35-13.
  19. Yes, Powell Valley is a horrible team. So I guess you could say Lebanon is mediocre. Excuses were not being made for Powell Valley and I'm not bashing Lebanon in any way. Lebanon does have a respectful football team. Just commenting on what I saw and how Powell Valley could have done things differently. Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers. I sort of wish I had went to the JI Burton / Appalachia game. I heard it was a very good game. Tough for the Smith kid indeed. Hope things go well and everything heals up in time for basketball.
  20. After seeing this game I agree with 123456789. Lebanon is an okay team, but not all that great. The Pinkston fumble that was recovered by Lebanon in the end zone in the 3rd quarter was the back breaker. The 3rd was all Lebanon. Phil Robbins needs to get away from the spread and go back to old PV style football. Leave the Huff kid (sophomore) in at QB and leave Pinkston at tailback. That is where Pinkston should be, he's not a QB. When the line was brought in tight with Huff under center they were much better offensively. If he can't see that he needs to just go ahead and retire. Defensively PV had two tremendous goal line stances in this game. One just before the half. Halftime was 13-7 Lebanon. Third quarter for Lebanon made the difference. They got the job done, but they are a mediocre team. They have alot of work to do. Right now don't know if they will get by Gate City in the Clinch or not. Note: First play of the game Lebanon player had to leave by ambulance. Hope he's okay. Looked to be like some sort of leg or ankle injury. Shortly after that in the 1st quarter one of the officials had to leave the game. I think the official got cleated in the mouth and had to go get checked out at the hospital and get sewn up. Didn't think the game was ever going to get started. Anyway hope they are both doing okay.
  21. The best nickname of all time has to be THE STONEGA STALLION (Edd Clark) that played at Appalachia in the late 60's. Stonega, pronounced Stone-A-guh, is an old coal camp just outside the town of Appalachia. Without a doubt he is the absolute best high school football player to ever come out of SWVa. If there are any ol' timers out there that saw The Stallion play and have been fortunate enough to see alot of high school football from that era up til now, I'm sure they would say that there is no comparison. There hasn't been another player in SWVa or the entire state for that matter since THE STALLION. Sorry, didn't mean to get sidetracked on his greatness. What other nicknames are out there???? Would love to hear about them.
  22. 8. Powell Valley vs Gate City: SWVa Superbowl
  23. I agree Chubz. People are forgetting that this kid is only a sophomore. And since he is being compared to the Jones brothers, they think he should be where they were as Juniors and Seniors now. Well, he played pretty good last year as a freshman. Thomas nor Julius started as freshman and right now his numbers are comparable to Thomas' and Julius' numbers as sophomores, if not better. Myron really doesn't have the speed of Julius, nor does he have the moves of Thomas. But he will be special in his own way. He is more physical and has more power than either one of those guys had. I guess time will only tell..........
