  1. Phil Robbins doesn't have 8 titles. He has 7 titles. The first title went to James "Poss" Bolling. He was the one that actually got the program off and running. Now there was a hard-nosed old school football coach.
  2. PV takes Region D title with 4-2 win over Gate City. It was their third win out of four games against the Lady Devils this year. Can't believe nobody had PV on their top teams list. They've been awesome all year. They will go into the state quarter finals at 21-5. GC will also be there as the Region D runner-up (18-6). Does anyone know who these two teams will be playing?
  3. Really??? What's the scoop behind that?
  4. Maybe Powell Valley will win it all this year. They have the best pitcher in the area with the Chandler girl. They play Gate City today in the Region D final. They hold a 2-1 edge over the Lady Devils in previous games played this season. I think GC is 18-5 and PV is 20-5. This one should be interesting, but I'm giving the edge to PV.
  5. The lighting is pretty good at Bullitt Park. And finally they got some new visitor side bleachers. The previous ones were at 30-40 years old. Should be a whole lot more convenient and comfortable.
  6. They are pretty good. Their losses came to "AAA" team Seymour, TN. "AA" powerhouse program in Breathitt Co, KY. They lost to a very fast team in JI Burton. In the JI Burton game PV failed to capitalize on three opportunities inside the Burton 20. Missed opportunities was pretty much the downfall in the Burton game. Overall they should match up with Giles in the semi-final. Losing to a AAA team and a very good AA team this season for some reason has caused them not to get much respect this year. They could possibly be 11-1 right now.
  7. No need to show a post. All you have to do is be at a Richlands game or JI Burton game and that is all you hear everybody saying. "We got this one boys." "No way were losing this one." "The VHSL may as well just hand us the trophy men, it's ours." "They might as well just go ahead and put it in the case." I'm not saying either will lose, but with this post being in regards to "SHOCKERS"? Could happen to either one of these teams. Ever think of that? Most likely they both will win, but the trophy is not in the case yet.
  8. This goes to show you guys that when you get into the playoffs anything can happen. I'm not big on predictions going into the playoffs. I just sort of ignore them because they mean nothing. Most Richlands fans and JI Burton fans already have the trophy in the case.............What's up with that?????
  9. You know what guys it really doesn't matter when and where you play. It's not like these schools are so far apart anyway. And it wouldn't take eiter one of them very long to get to Wise. If someone has to play on a crappy field, guess what? The other team has to play on it as well. Same conditions, same players, it is still the same game, and as far as field conditions go, no matter if it's a wet field, muddy field, or dry field they are both in the same situation. We all have heard "well if we didn't have to play in the mud we would have won". Well it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the other team had to play in it too. I have always hated hearing that excuse. It's not like one team was on dry ground and the other was on wet ground. They were both on the same field conditions. If a team has good speed, yes their speed will be even better on turf. Goes from good to great. This goes the same for the team with not so much speed. On turf they will go from not so much speed, to better speed. So it doesn't matter really. Crappy field or turf.
  10. I don't like the idea of these games being played at UVA-Wise either. It should be done the way that always has been. I'm not exactly for sure, but I'm thinking that this will not be done for next season. Just this year. GO FIGURE???? And really I never liked the idea of the state finals being played at JMU. I know that it can even out travel time, but if a team has made it that far they deserve to play on their home field. It needs to be rotated like times past. REGION A OR B (hosts 1 year), then REGION C OR D (hosts the next). I'm thinking that's the way it use to be. Does anyone out there think that it should be the way that it use to be?????
  11. THE VHSL WEBSITE JUST RELEASED THE RATINGS AFTER THIS PAST WEEKENDS GAMES. DIVISION 2 SHOWS PV AND HAYSI BOTH WITH AN 18.0 AVERAGE. HONAKER WILL BE A #3 SEED IN THE PLAYOFFS WITH A 15.6, CLINTWOOD WILL BE A #4 WITH A 14.9. HAYSI HAS ONE GAME REMAINING (GRUNDY). IF HAYSI WINS THE GRUNDY GAME THEY SHOULD BE THE #1 SEED WITH PV BEING #2. BUT IF THEY HAPPEN TO LOSE, DOES ANYONE KNOW IF PV WILL BE #1 AND IF IT WILL PUT HAYSI AT #2???
  12. Tyrod is a top 2007 "COLLEGE" prospect, not a 2007 high school prospect. He is a high school senior this year, so he can't be a 2007 top high school prospect. This comment was for "RETURNING" high school players for the 2007 season. That is why Tyrod is not and can't be on the list. This was not a comment on who the best Virginia high school QB is this year, but who is expected to be in the tops for the 2007 high school season according to the Washington Post.
  13. LONESOME PINE ALL THE WAY. YOU CAN EVEN LOOK AT THE LPD WHEN IT WAS THE OLD DISTRICT 8 BEFORE MOST OF YOU WERE PROBABLY EVEN BORN. GATE CITY WAS ALSO IN THE OLD DISTRICT 8 YEARS BEFORE THEY WERE EVER IN THE SOUTHWEST. WITH ALL THAT POWELL VALLEY, APPALACHIA, GATE CITY, AND CLINTWOOD HAS EARNED WITH THEIR ESTABLISHED PROGRAMS. THE LPD HAS THIS QUESTION ANSWERED. LOOK AT THE STATE TITLES THEY HAVE BROUGHT TO THE LPD. ESPECIALLY PV (8), APPY (6), CLINTWOOD (3), AND GATE CITY (1 TITLE FOR THE LPD). JI BURTON HAS ONE (WILL MOST LIKELY GET ONE THIS YEAR), AND JJ KELLY HAS ONE. THIS DISTRICT ALSO HAS NUMEROUS REGIONAL TITLES. LONESOME PINE ALL THE WAY.
  14. He has around 1400/1500 passing in seven games played and I think he has around 500/600 rushing. He sat out the Clintwood game. I'm going to see what I can find out with the local papers around here in the Kingsport area. The Kingsport TimesNews normally covers their games. I'm pretty sure he had over 2,000 passing last year as a sophomore, but I'm not for sure about his rushing numbers in 2005. I think it was around 700. I'll see what I can find out.
  15. Cedric Mitchell from Powell Valley is #6 on this list (The Washington Post). Also he is the first QB (out of all classifications) listed with the Richlands QB no where in sight. Why is Mitchell never mentioned on this forum??? He had great numbers as a sophomore last season and his numbers are very impressive this year. Passing and rushing. He also has missed a game this year. I've actually had the opportunity to watch this kid the last couple of seasons. He is a great athlete. The Richlands kid is a good QB, but it seems as though he is the only one ever mentioned.
  16. For those not in attendance at Legion Field. If it not have been for a few breaks that Gate City got this game would have been 40-0.
  17. THE SWVa BOWL!!!!!! Yes Sir-ee!! This will be the best of the best on the field Friday night. Although GC has played to an undefeated season thus far. They will not win this one! If GC can take away the air attack it will be close. But I don't think they will be able to do so. But even if they do look out for Patrick McKinney in the rushing game. He's a big strong back and loves to run at people. This kid doesn't dodge. It's all North and South. He's not had many carries at all this year compared to last season. He has a good average and has awesome strength up the middle. The receiving corps is the most talented group I have seen in Region D in at least 17 or 18yrs. PV also has the best linebackers in the Region. They will absolutely hit, hit, hit, and hit. Alot of punishing blows from these guys, and unfortunately for the victims, have put some backs on the sidelines for the rest of the night. People want to bring up the past games. CAN'T GO THERE! GC has had two tough battles this year. One with Richlands and one with Clintwood. Powell Valley has had one with the #2 AA team from KY in Breathitt Co. Again, you can't bring these up. Both teams are past this now and it will be whoever brings their A game OCT. 22 PV WILL BE THE ONE TO DO SO, that's why I'm sticking to the prediction I made about three or four weeks ago. PV-35 GC-14
  18. The one thing that always gets me when someone talks about the weather being against them is: WELL UH, THE OTHER TEAM HAD TO PLAY IN IT TOO YA KNOW!!!!!! DID IT BOTHER THEM??? Just never have believed much in the weather being against someone. When it's wet, muddy, rainy or whatever guess what? Both teams are playing in it. And it's the same if it's clear and dry. Two teams, one weather. They are both in it. THIS HAS NEVER BEEN AN EXCUSE WITH ME. I THINK IT'S A JOKE TO SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT. IT'S THE SAME TEAMS IN WHATEVER WEATHER CONDITION. They both have to play in it.
  19. HOWDYFANS! Division 2: Region A- Essex Region B- Manassas Park Region C- Lebanon Region D- Powell Valley STATE CHAMPION----POWELL VALLEY DARKHORSE--GATE CITY Division 1: Region A-- Sussex Central Region B-- William Campbell Region C-- Parry McCluer Region D-- JIBurton STATE CHAMPION----WILLIAM CAMPBELL DARKHORSE----FRANKLIN

  21. Howdyfans! Here are my scores: Lebanon 30 Chilhowee 14 PV 42 Clintwood 12 Honaker 48 Rye Cove 6 Graham 49 Abingdon 14 My game of the week: Tazewell 18 Gate City 14
  22. True. What happens in their game is what counts.
  23. Early prediction: Powell Valley will win at Legion. 35-14 Pound has improved, but if GC only beat them 21-7!!!!! PV should have a solid win against GC. Look for them to own the LPD and Region D crowns this year. If PV hadn't dropped two passes in the end zone Friday night they could have possibly won against the #2 rated AA football team in Kentucky. Considering who they played I think they did okay. Don't think GC could fair as well as PV did against Breathitt. But then again, you never know. Breathitt had some monsters on offense too! Did you see the size of #71,70, and 73? #71 looked bigger than GC's Zach Jones who is the best lineman in Region D. Can anyone tell me about Tazewell this year? Haven't heard anything about them. Just wondering if it would be worth going to the GC/Tazewell game or if GC will clobber them??
  24. I do have to say that there are alot of great football programs out there. But I would also have to say that the LPD rules this topic. I'd like to see other opinions on this. But here is my list for the best and most outstanding football programs: 1. Powell Valley; reason (8 state titles, and they have never lost the BIG-ONE). Everytime they have been in the final they WON! They have only lost one semi-final, back in 1983. Eight state titles since 1982. In 22 seasons (that's one for every 2.75yrs). Who else can say that? NOBODY! 2. Appalachia; reason (6 state titles) And they are only 2 or 3 miles up the road from Big Stone Gap (home of Powell Valley). Can you imagine the program when these two schools consolidate in 4 or 5 yrs!!!!! 3. Gate City; reason (4 state titles, 3 in "AA") These guys are full of tradition. 4. Clintwood; yeah yeah, I know it's been a while since they have had a title. But when you consider the program from the get-go, these guys rank right up there near the top. They had three state titles in the 70's and when Ralph Cummins was head coach there. He was THE BEST in the area. When you look at coaching records this guy is in alot of categories. Not only in the state, but also nationally. This guy built a great program! THE LPD IS MOST DEFINITELY THE BEST DISTRICT IN THE STATE.
