Richlands' Duo Named All-State

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)  Whether carrying the ball or attacking the other team when it had the ball, William Fleming’s Dwayne Priest always had an impact on the game.

He’s The Associated Press Group AA player of the year for 2005, as selected by a panel of sports writers that put him on the all-Group AA team at defensive back.

Priest, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound senior, rushed for 1,548 yards and 20 touchdowns and caught six passes for 152 yards and two scores. On defense, he had 60 solo tackles, four interceptions, forced one fumble, recovered three and broke up five passes.

Richlands placed a pair of defensive players on the first team. Nose tackle Travis Payne and defensive end Brandon Gayheart represent the Blue Tornado, which finished 13-1, losing to Turner Ashby in the Group AA, Division 3 state championship game. Payne and Gayheart led a defense that recorded five shutouts to start the season, and just 26 points during the regular season.

Division 3 state champion Turner Ashby and Division 4 winner Salem each placed two players on the first team, and Salem coach Stephen Magenbauer is the coach of the year. In two seasons at the school, he’s 27-1 and has won two state championships.

Offensive tackle Carl McIntyre and linebacker Charlie Newman are the selections from Turner Ashby, which beat Richlands 27-13 in the championship game.

Salem linebacker Jonas Rawlings is joined on the first team by teammate Tony Spradlin, a wide receiver who had a 44-yard touchdown catch when the Spartans beat Powhatan 28-10 in the championship game, stretching their winning streak to 22.

The first-team offense also features Orange teammates Bradley Starks at quarterback and T.J. Minor at wide receiver. Starks threw for 2,286 yards and 29 touchdowns and ran for another 685 yards and 11 scores. Minor caught 59 passes for 1,054 yards and 10 TDs.

Spradlin had 44 catches for 855 yards and seven touchdowns.

The running backs are Warren County’s H.B. Banjoman, who ran for 2,607 yards and a state-high 37 touchdowns in 10 games, Joe Oher of Sherando and Rontray Houchens of Louisa. Oher ran for 2,264 yards and 29 scores; Houchens for 2,045 yards and 21 TDs.

David Reddick of Cave Spring, the younger brother of Duke basketball star J.J. Reddick, is the tight end. He had 22 catches for 473 yards and two touchdowns.

Along with McIntyre, the line includes Louis Sanchez of Harrisonburg at center, Alex Stadler of Liberty-Bealton and Daryl Robertson of Liberty-Bedford at guard and Josh Wright of Louisa at the other tackle spot.

Jimmy Spurlock of Harrisonburg, who kicked nine field goals, is the placekicker, and the punter is Matt Mares of Lafayette, who averaged nearly 42 yards per punt.

Eli Crawford of Robert E. Lee-Staunton is the kick returner, and the utility player is P.J. Hayden of James Monroe, a two-way star who caught 59 passes for 989 yards and 13 touchdowns and also scored on three punt returns, a kickoff and an interception.

Richlands’ teammates Payne and Gayheart anchor the defensive line. They are joined by Frankie Keeney of Liberty-Bedford, who had 17 sacks, and Sam Battle of William Fleming. Battle was in on 126 tackles and had four sacks.

At linebacker, Rawlings and Newman, who was in on 150 tackles, are joined by Maurik Goode of Powhatan and Elijah McCall of Bassett. Goode was involved in 89 tackles and had three sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception.

Andrew Hoffer of Christiansburg joins Priest in the secondary. Hoffer was in on 135 tackles, forced three fumbles, intercepted five passes and blocked three kicks.

The secondary also has Jeremy Gardner of Courtland and David Poutier of Grafton.

His numbers aren't to far from Robert Henry's:

Henry had a stellar 2005 campaign, leading Graham to a 9-3 record and an appearance in the Region IV championship game. Henry, a 6-foot-senior tailback, rushed for 1,523 yards and 22 touchdowns, including games of 272 and 302 yards in the season’s waning weeks.

He also caught nine passes for 151 yards and returned eight kicks for a 18.6 yard average. Defensively, Henry recorded 60 tackles and recovered a pair of fumbles.

Henry also missed some games. What would his stats have looked like with him being healthy all year.

im from salem and i want you to know that i really wished for richlands to win state championship! and i also believe that some of the all-state teams and regional teams seem to be either misguided or picked by people whop were not in the know! but tony spradlin for salem was the most deserving player for salem! he was small and made some of the most unbelievable catches i have seen! he was unreal because it happened every friday! you cant completely go by statistics because there is differances in competition and team schemes ! salem in reality could have had 3 0r 4 players on that first team! im used to live in bluefield but after living here in salem they have some players , like tony spradlin, most years just produce more than what their capable of and they always are good or great defensively! i hope you guys do not hate me for this but salem is really a hard working -class city who just happens to love football and its kids, i know beacuse my own children have been treated greatly! i believe that since i have been here salem is a lot like the programs on this website , albeits on a bigger scale!
