elections have consequences

Recommended Posts

In light of the ongoing loss of liberty and a free country under this administration, I'm posting all relevant posts here for not only convenience but to remind people that "elections have consequences".

perhaps next time people won't even consider who is hip and who isn't in grave matters of American elections, but rather what they're voting for, and hopefully according to what they research, not what they are told by the increasingly untrustworthy media..

health care

It's bad enough they intend to force the working men and women to pay for free health care for those who don't or can't, but as suspected they intend to take the ability of any American who can or would rather pay for their own better health care through private insurance illegal.

"It's Not An Option

By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Wednesday, July 15, 2009 4:20 PM PT

Congress: It didn't take long to run into an "uh-oh" moment when reading the House's "health care for all Americans" bill. Right there on Page 16 is a provision making individual private medical insurance illegal.

When we first saw the paragraph Tuesday, just after the 1,018-page document was released, we thought we surely must be misreading it. So we sought help from the House Ways and Means Committee.

It turns out we were right: The provision would indeed outlaw individual private coverage. Under the Orwellian header of "Protecting The Choice To Keep Current Coverage," the "Limitation On New Enrollment" section of the bill clearly states:

"Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day" of the year the legislation becomes law.

So we can all keep our coverage, just as promised — with, of course, exceptions: Those who currently have private individual coverage won't be able to change it. Nor will those who leave a company to work for themselves be free to buy individual plans from private carriers.

From the beginning, opponents of the public option plan have warned that if the government gets into the business of offering subsidized health insurance coverage, the private insurance market will wither. Drawn by a public option that will be 30% to 40% cheaper than their current premiums because taxpayers will be funding it, employers will gladly scrap their private plans and go with Washington's coverage.

The nonpartisan Lewin Group estimated in April that 120 million or more Americans could lose their group coverage at work and end up in such a program. That would leave private carriers with 50 million or fewer customers. This could cause the market to, as Lewin Vice President John Sheils put it, "fizzle out altogether."

What wasn't known until now is that the bill itself will kill the market for private individual coverage by not letting any new policies be written after the public option becomes law.

The legislation is also likely to finish off health savings accounts, a goal that Democrats have had for years. They want to crush that alternative because nothing gives individuals more control over their medical care, and the government less, than HSAs.

With HSAs out of the way, a key obstacle to the left's expansion of the welfare state will be removed.

The public option won't be an option for many, but rather a mandate for buying government care. A free people should be outraged at this advance of soft tyranny.

Washington does not have the constitutional or moral authority to outlaw private markets in which parties voluntarily participate. It shouldn't be killing business opportunities, or limiting choices, or legislating major changes in Americans' lives.

It took just 16 pages of reading to find this naked attempt by the political powers to increase their reach. It's scary to think how many more breaches of liberty we'll come across in the final 1,002."

So now in this "free country", they're outlawing my ability to pay for whatever health care I want.

1 of the 1st posts last year I made about politics as the elections approached was that people would have to realize they were voting between a free country or a socialist country controlled by government. I was 100% correct and we're unfortunately only getting started..

The health care will be enough of a problem if it passes, but I really have a lot bigger problems with this government expecting to tell people they can't have a health care insurance business and telling citizens they can't pay for what they want to, or who they'll see about health care.

Since when did the U.S. government acquire the power to dictate what citizens can and can't do in such matters, where will that power stop?

Vice President Joe Biden told people attending an AARP town hall meeting that unless the Democrat-supported health care plan becomes law the nation will go bankrupt and that the only way to avoid that fate is for the government to spend more money.

“And folks look, AARP knows and the people with me here today know, the president knows, and I know, that the status quo is simply not acceptable,†Biden said at the event on Thursday in Alexandria, Va. “It’s totally unacceptable. And it’s completely unsustainable. Even if we wanted to keep it the way we have it now. It can’t do it financially.â€

“We’re going to go bankrupt as a nation,†Biden said.

“Now, people when I say that look at me and say, ‘What are you talking about, Joe? You’re telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?’†Biden said. “The answer is yes, that's what I’m telling you.â€

Obama Health Plan to Cover 12 Million Illegals

Sunday, July 19, 2009 6:32 PM

By: David A. Patten

On Friday, Democrats moved one step closer to giving free health insurance to the nation’s estimated 12 million illegal aliens when they successfully defeated a Republican-backed amendment, offered by Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev., that would have prevented illegal aliens from receiving government-subsidized health care under the proposed plan backed by House Democrats and President Barack Obama.

The House Ways and Means Committee nixed the Heller amendment by a 26-to-15 vote along straight party lines, and followed this action by passing the 1,018-page bill early Friday morning by a 23-to-18 margin, with three Democrats voting against the plan.

The Democratic plan will embrace Obama’s vision of bringing free government medical care to more than 45 million uninsured people in America – a significant portion of whom are illegal aliens.

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, costs under the Obama plan being proposed by the House will saddle citizens with $1.04 trillion in new federal outlays over the next decade.

Congressional Democrats and Obama have argued that their health plan is necessary to contain rising health care costs.

But, last Thursday, CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf testified before the Senate Budget Committee and warned lawmakers that the proposed “legislation significantly expands the federal responsibility for health care costs."

A key factor increasing costs is that Democratic plan provides for blanket coverage to as much as 15 percent of the U.S. population not currently insured, including illegals.

Democrats had insisted throughout the health-care reform debate that illegals would be ineligible for the so-called public option plan that is to be subsidized by taxpayers.

"We're not going to cover undocumented aliens, undocumented workers," Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, told reporters in May. "That's too politically explosive."

Republicans, however, point out that the Democrats, by refusing to accept the Heller amendment, would deny health agencies from conducting simple database checks to verify citizenship. Many states give illegals driver licenses, which will be sufficient to get free health care under the plan.

Critics also contend that millions of illegals who already have counterfeit Social Security cards or other fraudulent documents. There is no enforcement mechanism in the legislation, experts say, to prevent illegals who use fake IDs to obtain jobs from also obtaining taxpayer-subsidized health insurance.

GOP representatives introduced the amendment to provide a way to weed out non-citizens from the program.

A description of the amendment on Heller's Web site state it would "better screen applicants for subsidized health care to ensure they are actually citizens or otherwise entitled to it."

The Web post added, "The underlying bill is insufficient for the purpose of preventing illegal aliens from accessing the bill’s proposed benefits, as it does not provide mechanisms allowing those administering the program to ensure illegal aliens cannot access taxpayer-funded subsidies and benefits."

The Heller amendment would have required that individuals applying for the public health care option would be subject to two systems used to verify immigration status already in use by the government: The Income and Eligibility Verification System (IEVS) and the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program.

The two systems cross-reference Social Security numbers and employment information to establish whether an individual is a U.S. citizen.

Critics: Free Health Care Means More Illegals

A recent Rasmussen Reports poll found that an overwhelming 80 percent of Americans oppose covering illegals in any public health care bill.

Anti-immigration activists say the availability of low-cost benefits, including health insurance and in-state tuition, will only lure more immigrants to come to the United States.

Political analyst Dick Morris, in his recently released best-selling book “Catastrophe”, warns that giving illegal free health care will lead to a flood of new illegals who can take advantage of such a benefit not offered in their home countries.

William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration, agrees with that sentiment, writing, "Each state and federal elected official must know that illegal aliens should not be given licenses, in-state tuition, mortgages, bank accounts, welfare, or any other benefit short of emergency medical care and law enforcement accommodations before they are deported."

But a small fraction of illegals end up deported, as many make widespread use of fake IDs to easily gain access to government benefits programs.

"Experts suggest that approximately 75 percent of working-age illegal aliens use fraudulent Social Security cards to obtain employment," wrote Ronald W. Mortensen in a recent Center for Immigration Studies research paper. Mortensen says one of the big misconceptions about illegals is that they are undocumented.

James R. Edwards Jr., co-author of The Congressional Politics of Immigration Reform, recently wrote on National Review Online that "it's hard to envision how health reform can avoid tripping the immigration booby trap."

Edwards says none of the legislation under consideration actually requires any state, federal, or local agency to check the immigration status of those who apply for the program.

The assumption is that companies have vetted their employees to ensure they are eligibility for legal employment – a difficult task for employers given the active market in fraudulent documents. Thus Edwards maintains "some of the money distributed … inevitably would go to illegal aliens."

The estimates of illegal aliens in the United States without health insurance vary. The most commonly cited statistic, attributed to the Center for Immigration Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau, holds that 15 percent to 22 percent of the nation's 46 million uninsured are illegal aliens. That would be between 6.9 million and 10.1 million people. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Obama claimed the nation United States has 12 million or more undocumented aliens.

John Sheils of the Lewin Group, a health care consulting firm owned by UnitedHealth Group, recently told National Public Radio that about 6.1 million illegals – about half of all illegals in the United States – lack documentation and therefore would not be legally eligible for benefits under the current health care reforms.

Sheils says the other half of the nation's illegals – 5 million to 6 million – use false documents to obtain on-the-books employment. Many of them are already insured under their employers' plans, he added.

"A lot of those people are getting employer health benefits as part of their compensation," Sheils told NPR.

Certainly, some contend that undocumented workers who are gainfully employed and receiving benefits such as health insurance are contributing to society. But the fact remains that, once equipped with a fake ID, a person in the United States illegally can obtain both a job and the benefits that go with it.

Estimates of the cost of providing illegals with medical care vary. Most uninsured illegals who need medical attention obtain it from hospital emergency rooms. And several states are already straining under the huge burden of paying for the health costs of illegal aliens.

According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), in 2004 California's estimated cost of unreimbursed medical care was $1.4 billion. Texas estimated its cost at $850 million annually, and Arizona at $400 million.

Non-border states shoulder heavy burdens as well. Virginia's annual cost of providing health care for undocumented workers is approximately $100 million per year, FAIR reports, while Florida's health care cost is about $300 million annually.

One of the ironies of the proposed legislation is that it would fine American citizens who opt not to purchase insurance coverage, but would exempt illegals from such fines. This is presumably due to the fact that they are not supposed to participate in the program anyway.

Even if no illegals were likely to benefit from health care reform, Democrats have made it clear that amnesty is the next item on their ambitious legislative agenda.

"I've got to do health care, I've got to do energy, and then I'm looking very closely at doing immigration," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., declared in June.

Reid explained the urgent need for amnesty in terms very similar to those that Democrats have used to press for health care reform. "We have an immigration system that's broken and needs repair," Reid said.

Immigration expert Edwards, for one, says health-care reform may itself need serious medical attention before it is healthy enough pass through Congress.

"The American people may soon realize how much health reform will benefit immigrants and cost the native-born," he writes. "When that happens, the volatile politics of immigration could derail universal health care."

The health care plan including coverage to illegals in this country is just a way of buying votes. It's not about right or wrong for principles or the citizens. Just like Obamanation gave more control of the car manufactures to the unions. Unions haven't been about right or wrong for decades and they have proven that by the way they are fattening their pockets directly. They bought votes.

The first job of a politician is to get elected and telling the truth is a last resort. Give health care to illegals buy spending the money from everyone else is the easiest way for an elected office to stay in office.

They have to be granted amnesty 1st, not that they won't be, but I agree that's the bigger scheme, provide for illegals and the dependents, increase their handouts, be rewarded with their loyalty in elections.

What renowned soviet high up said 20 some years ago that America would fall when they figured out they could vote themselves $?

"Cardin Town Hall Meeting On Health Care Gets Angry

LARGO, Md. (WUSA) –– Maryland Senator Ben Cardin, a Democrat who favors health care reform, faced an audience here of about 300 Monday evening for what he called a town hall meeting on the topic that is the number one item on President Obama's domestic agenda.

With so many versions of the legislation in so many committees on Capitol Hill, the bill's final form is far from known.

"We're at the first stages of the discussion of health care reform," Cardin said.

Audience members could offer questions on cards that were passed out as they entered the Prince George's County Community College Student Center, or they could line up at microphones to offer them in person.

Perhaps the most controversial, came from Robert Broadus of Clinton, Maryland, an audience member who had lost his job and replaced it with one that paid him far less money.

"I decided not to get the health insurance. That's working out for me because I'm able to save that extra money and give it to my family members and use it on myself. Senator Cardin, I want to know are you going to tell me an individual...that I have to buy health care or else you're going to fine me $2,500 every year I don't get it? Our founding fathers assured us we have a Bill of Rights and I want to see you uphold that," Broadus said in an increasingly emotional voice and to scattered applause.

Cardin responded by asking Broadus what would happen if he became sick, broke a bone, had a car accident and ended up in an emergency room.

"You don't pay. You are part of the population that shifts its costs over to a person who does pay, and they're paying for you," Cardin said.

Explaining how hospitals have often to absorb those costs, Cardin said many hospitals would chose simply to leave the community.

"I just think the overriding public interest is to require you and everyone in this country to have health insurance," Cardin said. "

quote of the article

"You don't pay. You are part of the population that shifts its costs over to a person who does pay, and they're paying for you," Cardin said."

Who said he wouldn't pay, seems he intends to use the $ for himself more responsibly, besides, most conservatives work and pay their taxes. Aside from that, ....

"you don't pay, you're part of the problem?".........

yet this program is aimed at providing free health care to 20 million illegals and the low income people of America most of whom don't work?

Great find Buzzsawbeaver...My wife is going to school to to become an physicians assistant ( hopefully ), and I showed her this link and the first words out of her mouth was that nobody will want to go into the medical profession if this passes and this country will have a shortage of doctors.

A lot of doctors have come here to work from g.b. and canada because of that exact reason. But as you might have read already, this administration wasn't able to do anything about health care before the august time line so it will at least be sep. or later before they can push health care again. It seems people are really starting to realize how bad this would be and not supporting it, hopefully if that's the case cap and trade will have that opposition and not be passed.

2 weeks ago I would have though each were certain to be passed eventually, it seems a lot more hopeful now though. ..

good luck to your wife!

The House passed emergency legislation Friday approving an additional $2 billion for the "cash for clunkers" program, whose immediate popularity this week threatened to sink the program.

Skipping over regular procedure to obtain an immediate floor vote, the House Democrats' legislation would shuffle around funds from the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, an emergency stimulus for the original $1 billion budget for rebates on new cars that lawmakers worried had been exhausted in only a week.

Republicans objected to the maneuver, saying Democrats were trying to jam the legislation through. The bill includes hand-written marks on its margins, a sign of the haste in which the legislation was written Friday.

Democrats have hailed the success of the clunkers program, which has fueled hundreds of thousands of new car sales this week, but congressional Republicans began mounting a campaign Friday against the "absurdity" of another infusion of money, calling it the second bailout in three days following a $14 billion boost in funds for highways and other projects.

"If there was an 'extra' $2 billion in a stimulus program that was suitable for a different purpose, why did we spend the $2 billion in the first place?" said Rep. Jerry Lee of California, the ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee. "How many other billions of dollars are in the stimulus not being spent that we can return to the taxpayers?"

The White House said the program would continue despite mounting concern over funding, which would not be approved before a Senate vote, which was not possible Friday.

"We're working that through," said David Axelrod, a senior adviser to President Obama. "The program is going to continue."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the program remain alive "this weekend" and anyone looking to buy a car through the program should still do so –– but would not commit to any timeframe beyond that.

Republican leadership said that in the face of overwhelming support they would not be able to sink the bill, but that many Republicans would likely end up voting against it. The legislation may face stiffer opposition in the Senate, where Republican leaders expressed their fervent disapproval.

"We're now again bailing out the automobile corporations, two of which we own," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. "It's remarkable."

Republicans in the House and Senate said early handling of the program sent worrying signals that the administration was not prepared to handle legislation on health care reform, which will involve far larger sums of money.

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said it was unclear how many Republicans would support the infusion plan. "There are a lot of questions about how the administration administered this program. If they can't handle something as simple as this, how would we handle health care?" he said, a sentiment echoed by Sen. David Vitter, R-La.

"Cash for Clunkers has only been active for a short period of time, and it has already run a deficit," Senator Vitter said in a statement. "But we are supposed to trust the president and his Congressional allies to accurately 'reform' the health care industry, which makes up one-seventh of our entire economy?"

The Senate was not scheduled to vote on Friday but lawmakers hoped to win approval for additional funding next week. Gibbs said administration officials and bipartisan leaders of Congress were working Friday morning "to find and develop ways to continue to fund this program."

The administration assessed its options amid concerns that the $1 billion allocated for "cash for clunkers" may have been depleted. The program officially began last week and has been heavily publicized by automakers and dealers.

Called the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS, the program offers owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle, in exchange for scrapping their old vehicle. Congress last month approved the plan to boost auto sales and remove some inefficient cars and trucks from the roads.

The program was scheduled to last through Nov. 1 or until the money ran out, but few predicted the fund would run out so quickly. The $1 billion in funding would provide up to 250,000 new car sales.

It was unclear how many cars had been sold under the program. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said about 40,000 vehicle sales had been completed through the program but dealers estimated they were trying to complete transactions on another 200,000 vehicles, putting the amount of remaining funding in doubt.

John McEleney, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association, said many dealers have been confused about whether the program will be extended and for how long. Many had stopped offering the deals Thursday after word came out that the funds available for the refunds had been exhausted.

"We are hoping for some clarity from the White House and Congress before the day is over," McEleney said Friday.

The clunkers program was set up to boost U.S. auto sales and help struggling automakers through the worst sales slump in more than a quarter-century. Sales for the first half of the year were down 35 percent from the same period in 2008, and analysts are predicting only a modest recovery during the second half of the year.

So far this year, sales are running under an annual rate of 10 million light vehicles, but as recently as 2007, automakers sold more than 16 million cars and light trucks in the United States.

Earl Stewart, who owns a Toyota dealership in North Palm Beach, Fla., said the changing messages on the program has created confusion among his customers and his staff. Stewart's accounting department also could only enter about a dozen of the 47 sales he made into the government Web site set up to handle the transactions, leaving him wondering if he will get refunded for the remaining vouchers.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the program, Stewart said he planned to continue to sell cars under the program Friday but would delay delivering the new vehicles and scrapping the trade-ins. Drivers would be put in loaners until he was absolutely certain the program was still going.

"It's been a total panic with my customers and my sales staff. We are running in one direction and then we are running in another direction," he said.

Since we elected a would be dictator to the office of president!

2 billion American tax payer $s to go to offshore oil drilling. ..........................for brazil.

This administration is against Americans drilling for oil, mining coal, ect., providing energy for ourselves, but our costs are going up and we're about to have to fight cap and trade.

Could this individual be any more against the country he's president of?

"Obama Underwrites Offshore Drilling

Too bad it's not in U.S. waters.

You read that headline correctly. Unfortunately, the Obama Administration is financing oil exploration off Brazil.

The U.S. is going to lend billions of dollars to Brazil's state-owned oil company, Petrobras, to finance exploration of the huge offshore discovery in Brazil's Tupi oil field in the Santos Basin near Rio de Janeiro. Brazil's planning minister confirmed that White House National Security Adviser James Jones met this month with Brazilian officials to talk about the loan.

The U.S. Export-Import Bank tells us it has issued a "preliminary commitment" letter to Petrobras in the amount of $2 billion and has discussed with Brazil the possibility of increasing that amount. Ex-Im Bank says it has not decided whether the money will come in the form of a direct loan or loan guarantees. Either way, this corporate foreign aid may strike some readers as odd, given that the U.S. Treasury seems desperate for cash and Petrobras is one of the largest corporations in the Americas.

But look on the bright side. If President Obama has embraced offshore drilling in Brazil, why not in the old U.S.A.? The land of the sorta free and the home of the heavily indebted has enormous offshore oil deposits, and last year ahead of the November elections, with gasoline at $4 a gallon, Congress let a ban on offshore drilling expire.

The Bush Administration's five-year plan (2007-2012) to open the outer continental shelf to oil exploration included new lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico. But in 2007 environmentalists went to court to block drilling in Alaska and in April a federal court ruled in their favor. In May, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said his department was unsure whether that ruling applied only to Alaska or all offshore drilling. So it asked an appeals court for clarification. Late last month the court said the earlier decision applied only to Alaska, opening the way for the sale of leases in the Gulf. Mr. Salazar now says the sales will go forward on August 19.

This is progress, however slow. But it still doesn't allow the U.S. to explore in Alaska or along the East and West Coasts, which could be our equivalent of the Tupi oil fields, which are set to make Brazil a leading oil exporter. Americans are right to wonder why Mr. Obama is underwriting in Brazil what he won't allow at home."

socialism can work in a rabidly patriotic environment. in our current individualistic cultural context...well, we screwed.

To put that comment into context, I'd suggest that a socialistic-type thing can exist for a while. For example, during World War II, we had really confiscatory tax rates, we had rationing of just about everything related to the war effort (food, gas, oil, tires, etc). It was accepted and tolerated, as we felt we had a large common goal as a nation.

I'm guessing you're probably referring to things like that. Or like Chavez, how he turns it into a struggle for his country's survival. That's sort of what Joe (Stand up Chuck, let 'em see you!) Biden is out there trying to do...warn that there are DIRE CONSEQUENCES if we don't submit to the government on this. Clinton did this in 1993...he said the economy would TANK if we didn't work to get his plan of universal healthcare enacted. Well, his plan failed, and the economy rebounded just fine without it.

As someone else said, and to add to it, once we reach the point where more than 50% of the citizens are not paying federal taxes to support the country, they'll be more than willing to vote for people who will take SOMEONE ELSE'S MONEY to support them. We're getting quite close to that now.

I just wonder when that expanding class of people realizes that when they take the government money, as long as the government tells them exactly what to do with it, that they're in effect becoming slaves of the US government?
