I guess you are such a hot coaching prospect.  He was at a school with 250 kids or so.  I guess recruiting there was an option he had.

Food for thought: VHSL enrollment figures

Clintwood 302

Holston 297

J. I. Burton 279

Eastern Montgomery 276

Haysi 264

Northwood 261

Thomas Walker 254

There are 7 schools within 50 students of Thomas Walker in SWVA that have had greater than .500 seasons in the last 3 years.  One of those schools has won a state title, and one of those made it to a kajillion state championship games in the last 10 years.

Lest we forget about little old Hurley, who had 6 wins + playoff appearance two seasons ago with a whopping 178 students.

I'm not saying that Thomas Walker should be some dynamo, but it's clear that football isn't a priority.  Going 2-18 in two seasons at 90% of the schools in SWVA would get you canned.  There CAN be at least limited success with a school of that size.  They had a "not great but not horrible" record when they could fill a schedule with doormats like Ervinton and Coeburn.  Consolidation + not fielding a team tends to end that.

At first I didnt recognize the name, until thevols put him with TW.

TW was never much. Several years ago(7-8) they had a good RB and won some games and a few years ago, they had a couple of good RBs they had a few good seasons. The players down there never seemed to develop much. They dominated the Cumberland when they had a stud player but were the bottom of the barrel when they had talent on par with the other Cumberland schools.

I think Hurley put it on TW a couple of times. Haysi played TW for 4 years(going 2-2, 2 dominating Tiger wins, 2 close TW wins) and we all know that 2009-2012 weren't exactly Haysi's best years.

A lot of the years he was there TW was D2, while most of the Cumberland was D1(Rye Cove and Castlewood would move back and forth between D1/D2). I think if we were to go back and look TW would have a losing record against smaller (slightly smaller), rural schools.

btw, good #s and good points UVAO

I would think Battle could have done better. Definitely a step down imo

Actually he was at Lee High too in the early 00's...and that would have been a school with over 700-800 students...so yeah.  He was Lee's first hire right after Don Williams' retirement....Lee never won more than 2 games during his 3 years and this following their 90's good run.   He then went to TW, had a good string a talent (i.e. Cain and company) come through at one point, and most recently was at Eastern Montgomery for a couple of years.

early 2000s, that would be when Lee couldn't win the piss poor Highlands.  No offense meant Beamerball, just adding on

Ironically, Battle's last coach, Steve Wright, won the Highlands District Championship in 2000 and 2001, posting 9 and 10 win seasons, respectably, and visiting the state-semis. Meanwhile, his successor, Brian Lee, was busy going 3-14 at Lee, in the same less-than-stellar District, with the benefit of coalfield talent.

Comparing apples to apples, the track records speak for themselves. We'll see what happens, but on paper, this is a pretty big step down.

Lee wasn't exactly lacking for talent.  Granted they were hit by graduation hard following the '98 run and the '99 season took a hit, they had some good ones to work with in the early 2000 period.  During that stretch, players on those Lee teams, one lineman. Porterfield, went on to Elon, Sabbatini played at VMI and Concord, had a short stint at Mississippi State too I believe, Mosely went to Emory & Henry, Stapleton played at UVA-Wise, Newman went to Emory to play basketball but had a scholarship to play football at Carson-Newman, Carson earned a D1 scholly to run track at UVA.  This among several other good athletes.

wow guys if I am not mistaken before Whitten took over Batttle averaged 1 win a season for 10 straight years. Whitten got the ball rolling at Battle with some special kids. Coach Wright is one of the best in this area no doubt about it. But all this negativity towards Lee is astounding give the man a chance. BTW if you guys are right about Coach Lee then he should fit with Battles history pre-whitten/wright.
