No question Coach Matlock will be missed in the Hogo. A Great football and baseball head coach for a small school in SWVA. A lot of folks who follow Hogo sports figured this was coming, just the timing was a surprise to me. Maybe he should of announced this earlier in the summer or spring, but all will work out for Holston. Best of luck to Coach Matlock in his new position at VMS, and best of luck to the Cav's this season.

BHC-Matlock steps down  http://www.tricities.com/sports/article_2ed07774-183f-11e4-b371-001a4bcf6878.html

excerpt:

He’ll be replaced by assistant coach Derrick Patterson, a 2011 graduate and former defensive tackle at Emory & Henry College, said school athletic director Travis Gray.

It will be the first head coach stint for the 25-year-old Patterson, who was slated to be defensive coordinator for the Cavaliers this season. Patterson will have to wear the "interim" label this season.

“I’ve always aspired to be head coach one day,†Patterson said. “I definitely didn’t expect it would happen this soon.â€

Its official. . . . and it is bitter sweet. The Cavs will not be the same without "The Coach" being at the helm. From the beginning to the end, Coach Matlock was a family man and tremendous role model for our community. In our parts, small school and small town, Coach Matlock was Holston. He brought this school back to being relevant in football. During his tenure, we wore our Cavalier t-shirts with pride. I personally enjoyed the fine folks from the surrounding areas who would pat you on the back and say good luck Friday. This was not heard of before "The Coach" came here. The fantastic and exceptional job by Coach Matlock was evident on the field as well by winning two regional titles. Titles aside, the family man, role model, and of course The Coach will be missed. As Santana said "there's never one sunrise the same or one sunset the same," and for sure there will never be another Cavalier coach the same.

Says a proud papa. Could be that the Role model "coach" saw the well drying up and decided that he wanted to pursue administration.

A person doesent just choose administration, it takes a few years to get the credentials for the job. He probably decided he wanted to be a Principal while he was still in college getting his Bachelors degree.

If it was a matter of "the well drying up" I think he would have taken the Abingdon or Battle HC jobs.

A person absolutely makes a choice about whatever career path they follow. I'm not sure he was even considered for either coaching job.

I would imaging if he had wanted to transfer to either position it would be easily done. Unless of course there wasnt a teaching position open. That is a major issue when hiring a coach, I know it was a issue at Battle, idk about Abingdon.
