Honaker ace transfers to Virginia HighTim Hayes | Bristol Herald Courier excerpt: by Tim Hayes For the second straight year, a baseball player from Honaker named Austin has transferred to Virginia High. Right-handed pitcher Austin Ray confirmed in a telephone interview that he attended classes at the Bristol school on Tuesday and plans to play for the Bearcats this spring. “It was a big decision,†Ray said. “We’ve [his family] really thought about it all summer … and decided to make the move.†Virginia High won the 2014 VHSL 2A state title in June with utility man/pitcher Austin Kiser among nine seniors leading the way. Kiser played his first three seasons at Honaker and is now gearing up for his freshman season at East Tennessee State University. sixcat 2,913 Report Share Posted August 13, 2014 No slight intended toward Honaker but Virginia High will give him more exposure to college programs.
Bearcat Bob 491 Report Share Posted August 13, 2014 Wise decision on his part...if he has aspirations of playing beyond HS. Nothing against Honaker but VHS has a very good track record of getting their players to the next level.
87Tiger 62 Report Share Posted August 14, 2014 Austin is my nephew. The biggest reason for the transfer was 1) Coach Harding is unsure whether he will be coaching the Tigers next Spring due to his health 2) Honaker never registered Austin w/ the National College Clearing House (NCCH) 3) Honaker did not submit him for the Commonwealth Games. Since he moved to VHS, Coach Daniels registered him w/ NCCH and he's received three calls from D-1 schools and 1 D-2 school. As a Tiger alumni, was I happy to see him transfer...No...but to see that he will be looked after for post-HS is good. I'll still be pulling for Honaker, but I want to see my nephew excel, and go on to the next level of baseball. Bearcat Bob
87Tiger 62 Report Share Posted October 20, 2014 Austin received his first official offer. He conducted an official visit and then Carson-Newman offered him over the weekend. I believe he can get some bigger offers though. Deleted Account
