For the second straight year, a baseball player from Honaker named Austin has transferred to Virginia High.

Right-handed pitcher Austin Ray confirmed in a telephone interview that he attended classes at the Bristol school on Tuesday and plans to play for the Bearcats this spring.

“It was a big decision,†Ray said. “We’ve [his family] really thought about it all summer … and decided to make the move.â€

Virginia High won the 2014 VHSL 2A state title in June with utility man/pitcher Austin Kiser among nine seniors leading the way. Kiser played his first three seasons at Honaker and is now gearing up for his freshman season at East Tennessee State University.

Ray hopes to get similar attention from collegiate scouts now with the transition to a bigger school.

Austin is my nephew.  The biggest reason for the transfer was 1) Coach Harding is unsure whether he will be coaching the Tigers next Spring due to his health 2) Honaker never registered Austin w/ the National College Clearing House (NCCH) 3) Honaker did not submit him for the Commonwealth Games.  Since he moved to VHS, Coach Daniels registered him w/ NCCH and he's received three calls from D-1 schools and 1 D-2 school.  As a Tiger alumni, was I happy to see him transfer...No...but to see that he will be looked after for post-HS is good.  I'll still be pulling for Honaker, but I want to see my nephew excel, and go on to the next level of baseball.
