This Year's Surprise Teams

Even though they lost Friday night, the Central Warriors silenced a ton of critics by hanging in there with Honaker. Are the Warriors bound for their second playoff game in school history? Or will the incredibly imposing October schedule sink their ship? They have a great chance of going into the Oct 17 game in Big Stone at 6-1.

Similarly, I firmly believe that Northwood (yes, that Northwood) has a good chance to go 9-1 and possibly even 10-0, thanks to an incredibly weak Hogo. The only team that could really stand in their way is George Wythe (and possibly Rural Retreat) and it's well-known that the Maroons have yet to bounce back since winning State. Either way, we could have shades of 2003 in Saltville

Thoughts?

Agree on both. I think most people in this area knew Central could be solid with the right leadership but their start and showing against Honaker is much better than I would have believed. Idk much about Northwood but they are undefeated and have a really nice win over Marion.

I would throw Twin Valley into ther mix too. Obviously NW is better(it was proven on the field) But TV is having a nice season.

Tazewell's the only reasonable choice for this, unless you're talking about being "surprising" in a bad way, which would be Grundy in equally convincing fashion.

I don't know about that now.  Anyone that went through all the torture of games the past few years saw this coming.  I said after Chilhowie last year we were going to be a force this year.

3-2 after this Friday, probably/maybe 5-2 when they play Haysi. I could see TV at 7-3 maybe 8-2 at the end of the season and hosting a playoff game. Unless im mistaken that would be a 1st for the program.

I think most people expected Tazewell to be pretty good this season. I would say its a slight surprise that they are as good as they are

But we all knew Tazewell was going to have a good year. They were a breakout team, but not a surprising team

In a good way: Central, even though they haven't played a good team yet.

In a bad way: Richlands

You wanna explain that one? We are about 4 plays from being 4-0. And we've beaten a 3A team who everyone picked to destroy us. How are we a bad surprise? Unless of course you meant you were hoping we would be 2-8 and we won't be so that's bad for you?

Explain?

Central may not have BEATEN a good team but they have played a good team which sounded close.

Richlands isn't bad. They were favored against Union and until the last few seconds, had us beat.

Being from the Northwood Class of 89 I am glad to see my Panthers winning I just hate that the man who put all his work into this bunch of young men is getting no credit. Mark Frye has led these guys from middle school on as their Coach but stepped down before the season. Tommy Prater may be getting all the credit as the Head Coach but the reason they are winning is because of Mark Frye.

I am a Northwood fan and I like Frye, but I think that Frye stepping down was one of the best decisions he made.  He is a fine Middle school coach but does not have the drive or killer instinct to be a high school coach.  I also believe not having a Prater Playing is helping the "TEAM" also nothing against the Prater's they are all great athletes, the past couple of years you knew where the ball was going and to who, that is why I think Frye doesn't have it in him to be a high school head coach.
