Bearcat Bob 491 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 Gretna is still swooning from the Bearcat loss in last year's playoff! Seriously, I understand that they do not have the athletes they have had for the last 10 or so years but are still trying to play as if they do. Deleted Account 5,203 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 Looks to me like 2A west is much stronger than east... There's a significant drop-off in quality from about 6th onward in the East as compared to the West. I also think the worst of the East is worse than the worst of the West. Bearcat Bob 491 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 Funny thing is that Gretna set the all time losing streak about 15 years ago (I think Page Co. may have broken that record last year?). Gretna then had a phenomenal run for about ten years. Altavista lies in close proximity to Gretna. Altavista was so bad a few years ago that they actually stopped playing VHSL football. Now they have been on a very good run. I think the athletes in the area go to which school is hot at the moment.

In the past decade, you've seen some families with talented, athletic youngsters "coincidentally" relocate to Richlands. That's the basis for the running joke that Richlands "recruits" players. Of course, Richlands doesn't reach out to them, but they've received the benefit of this relocation. Naturally, you never, ever see a gifted athlete from a more prosperous school relocate to some school like Twin Valley or Rye Cove. In the '90s, you saw this with good baseball prospects in Graham's line "coincidentally" relocating to Tazewell. And I believe this is what's happening with Altavista/Gretna. It's easy to have a "coincidental" relocation.

stu_bean 1,058 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 Not so. There's a whole bunch of wide open, rural area on the Eastern Peninsulas and in SEVA. How the peninsula is always forgotten, went through there a few years back and just isn't a whole lot there. Don't know about cows but I would say chickens outnumber greatly. Tyson has a plant there I do remember. Deleted Account

Deleted Account 5,203 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 Same thing with Graham and Bluefield. How many athletes have we seen move across state borders? Not that many, and when it does, more Graham to Bluefield than Bluefield to Graham. Graham's football, while historically good, cannot compete with Bluefield. Bearcat Bob 491 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 One would think that VHS football would benefit from having a few TN players crossing State Street to get more playing time. However, I am not aware of that happening with any frequency, if at all. I know there have been a few "relocations" that have benefitted the VHS baseball program (and the relocated players). But VHS football apparently remains unattractive for TN transfers. V-Cats
redtiger 1,740 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 I always assumed that VA High would get some of TN Highs 3rd string guys, which could probably play for VHS in most years. Deleted Account and BlueRazor
Bearcat Bob 491 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 Granted it has been 30+ years since I played at VHS but there were no THS guys on our teams and I am unaware of any since. Gate City seems to get a bunch from Sullivan Co/Kingsport but if VHS is getting them, it is a secret to me...but I wish we could get some of those 3rd stringers...from a school that size, they might just be pretty good! redtiger 1,740 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 That was my point, if you cant play at TN High, SS or DB but are pretty good you could probably start/play at GC or VA High. If I was a Jr or Sr backup at one of the big Sullivan Co schools I would move over to GC or VAHigh Bearcat Bob
LegendatLegion 109 Report Share Posted September 30, 2014 Bob, GC doesn't get a "bunch" from Sullivan Co schools. I am aware of several through the years, and they have at least two this year. One is from VA. As far as I know no one from Gate City recruits these kids, and I think if you would look closely it happens at most schools, the ones who win get the most grief from others. I know of several kids from Gate City that have transferred to other schools for better chances. I too have been out of High School for 30 years or so, and I know for a fact at least one person from GC who transferred to VaHigh back then primarily to play baseball. Abingdon got 2 transfers from Patrick Henry when I was in school and they played basketball, baseball, and football. I also remember a time when several kids from VaHigh actually went over to Tenn High for basketball and football. Several of the GC kids through the years had at least one parent who graduated from GC, so I didn't really give it much thought. The way family dynamics are nowadays with a lot of Grandparents and Great-grandparents raising kids it also makes a few other factors come into play. This isn't anything new, I myself partially ended up in the GC area as my grandfather was "lured" out of the coalfields of Wise Co to come and work/play baseball for the Kingsport Press. It happened all over back in the day. the great Bobby Dodd of DB and GaTech fame was from Galax, VA and his Dad was given a job in Kingsport.
