VHSLhelper 570 Report Share Posted December 8, 2014 simple - you don't cover a team that's not in your viewing area, and Richlands fits the bill
Motorhead 5150 21 Report Share Posted December 8, 2014 I have some contacts in the broadcast industry and they told me a local affiliate can exercise their right to be the sole NBC, CBS, or ABC network in the area. Im guessing stations didn't mind other affiliates in the area until things got so competitive. It's sad really because WCYB has long been the channel we watched for high school sports back in the day. I think WJHL (Johnson City) and WDBJ (Roanoke) have been taken off the air in SWVA as well, haven't they?

If I am not mistaken WCYB had some managerial changes a couple of years ago and someone dropped the ball, They had always filed with the FCC as a "significantly viewed". But from what I heard they filed nothing in reference to Tazewell County.

I think WJHL (Johnson City) and WDBJ (Roanoke) have been taken off the air in SWVA as well, haven't they? Yes and no. Yes, the local affiliate can exercise those rights. WVVA exercising those rights, while paying 1/10th the attention to its VA viewership that it does to its WV viewership, was pretty piss poor of them. Some of the angst also focused on WCYB having a Tazewell County native on its broadcast team for a long time, which is one of the reasons WCYB had such strong viewership in the Richlands area. No, WDBJ was on the air as of the last time I went to my grandmother's house to watch UVA on Raycom back in October.
Motorhead 5150 21 Report Share Posted December 9, 2014 The thing that got me is WVVA and Time Warner blamed each other for the loss of WCYB in the Tazewell Co. area. WCYB did have a rally in Richlands right after being removed from the local airwaves but then no further support was shown for the area by the station.
