sixcat 2,919 Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 Galax has replaced Floyd, East Mont and Altavista with Radford, Rural Retreat and George Wythe for the 2015 season. I am hopeful that leads to a nice all-sports rivalry with George Wythe. For two schools to be in such close proximity and not have a healthy rivalry is astonishing to me. I understand there was some "bad blood" during the old New River District days but that was a lifetime ago. It's time for two communities to come together for the sake of some great high school athletics. redtiger
GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 Why aren't GW and RR in the MED??? Seems logical, considering location in comparison to other schools in MED vs. Hogo. Or, does that go back to the "bad blood" you speak of?
sixcat 2,919 Author Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 I don't know, to be honest with you. I am not familiar with the details of the "bad blood" that existed in the 80's between the two areas. Evidently, it resurfaced to a small degree last year when Galax played at George Wythe in the playoffs. They have played in baseball and basketball for several years with no incident that I am aware of. GWLoyal can speak more intelligently on the subject than I can. http://www.swvasports.com/ipb/index.php?/topic/32974-fan-behavior/?hl=gwloyal#entry306518 Attached a link to the thread spelling out some details from last football season. From what I understand, GWLoyal is accurate in his assessment that it was never related to athletics. Some punks from both communities started an all out riot that culminated with all athletics being dissolved between the two schools for 20 years. It's good to see we may be moving past the actions of a few ruining something positive for many.

That's not the first time that happened to the Maroons, and at times, it's made scheduling very difficult for them. Some of the best fans I know are from Wytheville, so I certainly don't mean that as a crack at GW, but rather the nature of local athletics. There are some schools, that because of the atmosphere of the communities and the feelings between them, aren't meant to play each other. Deleted Account 5,203 Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 Why not (1) punt Grayson, Marion, and Graham to the SWD; (2) ship Narrows to the TRD; and (3) consolidate Bland, Fort, and Galax in the Hogo? I know the VHSL has no concept of using maps, but that idea should fly for everyone. Graham gets back where it freaking belongs. The entire Hogo stops whining because Marion isn't there, and is replaced by 1 doormat, 1 that soon will be, and Galax.

sixcat 2,919 Author Report Share Posted December 16, 2014 I agree with redtiger. Districts will dissolve and the conference alignments will be the standard soon. Although some will not be happy with that. Glenvar being chief among them.
redtiger 1,740 Report Share Posted December 16, 2014 In my setup I guess Glenvar could stay in the 3 Rivers but I put them in the Pioneer to keep district numbers as even as possible
sixcat 2,919 Author Report Share Posted December 16, 2014 Doesn't Parry McCluer come to the west next year to balance the numbers with the loss of Clintwood and Haysi from 1A?
redtiger 1,740 Report Share Posted December 16, 2014 I think I have heard that before. Someone will have to.

There are some schools, that because of the atmosphere of the communities and the feelings between them, aren't meant to play each other Haha! Didn't take it as a crack at all. I completely understand. The history with Galax is much, MUCH different, however. It's small groups from both communities and by no means involves the majority of Maroon and Maroon Tide fans. Like sixcat said, though, even though there was no event during the GW/Galax playoff game in 2013, it was a completely different atmosphere well beyond the bounds of a game. It's totally unrelated to athletics, and started long before the riot broke out over 20 years ago. As far back as segregation days when black kids from Wytheville and Galax were forced to attend the same school. I do hope that all that is in the past. I know there will still be some lingering tension, but there is no reason people can't get together and watch a football game at this point. sixcat
