Richlands lost by 1 to Graham. Sometimes it's not all about putting on a "clinic." The boys are much improved from last season they are 2-2 on the year with victories over Tazewell and Lebanon and a loss to Graham and Gate City.

Give them time. The soccer culture in Richlands was non existent until the last few years. The players you are seeing come up now are the ones who have been in youth leagues from childhood up.

Just like any other sport, it requires quality youth leagues working as feeders to the high school program.  Galax kids play indoor soccer all winter long in North Carolina and summer travel leagues all over Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.  The varsity coach is my neighbor.  They have well over 50 kids between jv and varsity.  That's impressive for such a small school given the sport being played.

When John Stanton and Logan Forrest were playing the team was pretty good for the area. Made the playoffs their junior and senior year I believe and both players made all state. Will Moir was on their senior team too and he's definitely as good as they were this year.

They are 5-2 now with wins over Lebanon, Tazewell, Grundy x2, and Grayson Co. Losses to Graham 3-2 and Gate City 3-0.

They are making strides. Look much better now than they did in the early season. Up next is Tazewell on Tuesday.

Lost tonight 2-1 to Graham with about 1:04 left in overtime. It's been an up and down season. They stand at 6-7 after tonights heartbreaker. They have wins over Lebanon x2, Tazewell, Grundy x2, and Grayson Co. They also have losses to Graham x2, Gate City, Tazewell, Abingdon, Virginia, and Honaker. They've scored 27 goals and conceded 24 goals.

They are markedly improved from last season that saw them only win twice. But, they still have some room to grow. Losing C. Mullins a few games back doesn't help either.

This is precisely correct.

And going off on a slight tangent, my personal opinion is that soccer is the one school sport that benefits positively from an association with travel ball.  And the expansion of travel ball into previously "non traditional" areas is demonstrating results.  Kids in my current place of residence have always had access to quality clubs in Roanoke and Lynchburg, but that distance has been just enough to discourage participation in large numbers.  A local club was started about five years ago which is just now showing some dividends after developing its roots.  My son's middle school team just concluded its first winning season within the span of anyone's local memory.  About half of those kids (including my own) are active with travel clubs, all of them have several years of experience playing in local recreation leagues, and most of them started playing as young as the age of 5.

Of course we're still playing "catch up" against other local schools such as Jefferson Forest and E.C. Glass who have had direct access to travel programs for a significant period of time, but we're definitely seeing progress.  Our varsity side are the defending conference champions (at the 3A level) and notched the school's first win ever against Glass this season.

I would imagine that the current success of the girls program can be attributed in some part to participation in the Clinch River Soccer Association.  If that club proves to be sustainable, it is reasonable to assume that Richlands will be extremely competitive locally on the boys side as well.

Random question, how much of the Richland Girl's success comes from the exchange student?  I hear she is very good.

If you're talking about Nadia Ashiq, she's not an exchange student, I don't believe. She's been here forever.

Maybe you're thinking of our exchange student from Japan that plays tennis and is very good?

I had heard that Ashiq was an exchange student, but could have heard wrong.

I knew about the Japanese girl. Did she qualify for state?

I don't know their entire back story, but I don't think she's an exchange student. She's played all four years at Richlands, so she's been here at least that long.

According to that article, she's been here since she was three.
