Hokiebird7 1,416 Report Share Posted July 18, 2015 First off i am a Giles Spartan through and through and bleed red BUT there is no way on this planet we should be preseason #1....We lost 20 seniors but honestly only a handful will hurt to lose, yes we lost some great HS players but alot didn't play at all or much except in blowouts.....we do have talent coming up through the ranks and some of the JV players that will be playing as soph's this year on varsity are talented players but will need some game experience....they should be fine by playoff time(or at least we are hoping so). Glenvar is #1 preseason no doubt about it....state champions and return about 19 starters....same situation Giles was in last year...winning the title then returning most of their players. I honestly don't know if Giles is a top 10 team preseason but I would probably have them in there somewhere near 10 like futbolking said....but really these preseason polls are pointless anyway. I'd have Glenvar #1 and Richlands #2 at this point but I don't get a vote.....Richlands I hear is going to be VERY good....Your coach(can't remember his name LOL) dad told me they are loaded....and as i've always said if Giles can't win it all then i'm a Blues supporter Bigrhsfan and BlueRazor
GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted July 19, 2015 LOL!!! Silly BDT!!! The Virginia High School League does not release any pre-season Top 10 for any classification. The numbers they have listed are from the VHSL-Reference.com website which has ZERO affiliation with the VHSL. The numbers are based on a computer program that takes information from the last several seasons and compiles it to get a "ranking". http://www.vhsl-reference.com/ratingsmainpage_gy.cfm?GY=2015&DIVISION=2 They also listed VAPreps.com rankings as well. I guess someone from the BDT saw all the "excitement" on my board and jumped in with both feet trying to sell newpapers without actually knowing what they were seeing or what they were taking about. futbolking 766 Author Report Share Posted July 19, 2015 Figures...... WVVA had the same rankings up last night. Got an idea, let's post some fake rankings on this site sometime and see where they end up.

ph82 0 Report Share Posted July 20, 2015 New subscriber to this board, and new in the area. You don't have a very high opinion of the local sports coverage, especially from the local newspaper. What can they do to improve the coverage? I have been told they do a pretty good job considering they have such a small staff and limited resources. Maybe I should reconsider my subscription. What can you tell me.
Deleted Account 5,203 Report Share Posted July 20, 2015 New subscriber to this board, and new in the area. You don't have a very high opinion of the local sports coverage, especially from the local newspaper. What can they do to improve the coverage? I have been told they do a pretty good job considering they have such a small staff and limited resources. Maybe I should reconsider my subscription. What can you tell me. I'll take a stab. And welcome! WVVA is badly misnamed. It should be titled WVWV, because WV is 95% of that which the network reports. Though WVVA has an office within 3 miles of the state line, the network has made no bones that it panders to Beckley and its northern audience. When VA gets coverage, it's usually politically-motivated and derogatory. The lack of coverage, combined with the distance, is inexcusable. Also, WVVA blocked WCYB from broadcasting in the Richlands area, when WCYB (1) actually cared an iota for reporting in Tazewell County and (2) WCYB had a member of its news team from Richlands. That has rubbed many folks very raw. BDT is an error-riddled publication better served to be put out of its misery in its current condition. The sheer number of syntax and grammatical errors that pour forth from that magazine daily is exasperating. And they refuse to print any Letter to the Editor that is even the least bit critical, which makes a whole lot of sense when you don't utilize an Ombudsman. That's aside from having to read the political diahrrea of Smokey Shott, who doesn't know the Constitution from a hole in the ground. I've had two personal experiences with the BDT that say it all. One, my now-wife and I spent a couple of days carefully crafting our engagement announcement. Gave them $50 to run it. Gave the BDT our typewritten copy with explicit instructions to simply reprint it as is. Not only did the BDT run my engagement announcement under someone else's name, they riddled it with grammatical errors. Nevermind that I gave them a damned verbatim copy of what to type. When I called them raising holy Hell over it, I was told that their typist was 75 years old and should be expected to make a few mistakes. No refund. Haven't bought a paper since, and now actively undermine BDT at every chance I get. Two, I work with a local governmental agency. Last year, an unaffiliated Virginia politico ran to the BDT with information that was factually inaccurate, and the BDT ran with it. My organization's head contacted the BDT and advised that the information was inaccurate, and verified it. However, the BDT's managing editor and the politico were good friends, and the BDT waited 3 days to run a retraction, which it buried deep in the paper. Our head had to go to WVVA to correct the BDT's error because the BDT was too sorry to do so itself. I could go on. cityofRaven, futbolking and Bulldogs52
Deleted Account 5,203 Report Share Posted July 20, 2015 Sorry for the errors, but I typed all that with my thumbs without using a spell-checker. Still better than the average BDT article, though. futbolking 766 Author Report Share Posted July 20, 2015 I'll 2nd the fact that WVVA will run all over the state of West Virginia to cover teams that are on the edge of the viewing area or out of the viewing area. Coverage of the Virginia side is pretty much limited to when the Tazewell Co. Schools have a home game. Lord forbid that they drive 45 minutes to cover them playing at Fort Chiswell...for instance. Bland Co. gets coverage once in a blue moon, usually a home game. That's my biggest gripe..... Why am I watching hilights of "Meadow Bridge"...when one of their supposed home teams is playing only 45 minutes away. I get that WSLS out of Roanoke covers the Wytheville area, but for Pete's sake, when one of the tazewell or Bland Co. Teams has an away game, its OK to send a crew...instead, they'll send their crews 2 or 3 hours away to have hilights of a WV team. Fox59 out of Beckley covers our VA side schools as well as WVVA. They usually have better interviews of our coaches and players when they report on one of our teams as well. As for the bdt, I don't even know where to start. Bigrhsfan 884 Report Share Posted July 20, 2015 I will 2nd everything that footbolking and UVAObserver says about both WVVA & BDT. I am very lucky as I have both Direct TV ( which my home NBC network is WVVA ), but because I live very close to the Russell Co line behind SWCC, I get cable TV that comes from a local cable company out of Russell Co so I get WCYB on it. So at least I do get to watch them for my local sports.
VHSLhelper 571 Report Share Posted July 22, 2015 Honestly, you'll get some good game stories on a few VA games because THEIR reporters aren't the ones covering it - they use the local radio guys, like Dave, Lloyd & Anthony. I pulled these from last year's scrimmages thread... 1. Is it Friday? I read in the paper it said Saturday... 2. The Daily Tell a Lie got me good today. Article on internet read "Graham to host Virginia Tech in Benefit" (as did the print editions). It was actually Va. HIGH Ryan4VT
VHSLhelper 571 Report Share Posted July 22, 2015 And, strange as it may seem, "...punter Devan Summers' head rolled out of the end zone for a safety." was in a different paper, and it was NOT a typo. http://www.timesnews.net/article/9081151/devils-bait-the-bears-38-8 (about 3/4ths down)
sixcat 2,919 Report Share Posted July 22, 2015 Altavista and Giles lost a ton. Giles will still be a quality team, Altavista has more question marks. It's tough to replace guys like Juan Thornhill for smaller schools. I was talking to an Alavista assistant coach's brother recently who said they only have about 21 kids expected to come out for varsity football in the fall. If true, that's remarkable considering the recent success they have experienced. Fort Chiswell has too many unanswered questions given the recent coaching carousel to be ranked that highly in my opinion. Radford's late season run last year should bode very well for them this season. They appeared to be very young last year also. An 11 raking seems significantly low. Glenvar returns 19 starters after winning the 2A championship. They should be ranked #1 in 2A until proven otherwise on the field. Parry McClure lost the best player in school history. Again, it's hard for smaller schools to replace that type of talent.
ph82 0 Report Share Posted July 23, 2015 Thanks for the few replies to my question about local media. I think I will keep the paper for a while, and see how it goes. It is disappointing that radio guys would be better writers than the actual reporters on staff. That's not a good sign.

VHSLhelper 571 Report Share Posted July 23, 2015 I guess I should add that the radio guys are also newspaper guys who have also been 'stringers' for their local weekly paper forever. They know the history and the players better than a guy who's only been at the daily for a short time. cityofRaven
ph82 0 Report Share Posted July 23, 2015 Thanks. I am told the staff there at the paper has been there for a long while. You would think they would know the teams pretty well by now. Oh well, looking forward to the football season.
