The Bears will return 8 Starters on the Offensive side along with another 8 on the defensive side (I believe). They do lose the quarterback, but most people believe the new QB (Bryce Spears) Will be even better than last years 2000 yard passer, Tanner Hall. I keep in mind even though this team had their up and downs last season, they lost to the eventual state champs by 10 even though they had 7 turnovers. Anyone else have any opinions?

I have Union tabbed at 3rd in the west behind Glenvar and Richlands and just ahead of Giles and Gate City. The west will be a fun side this year and I feel the battle for the 1 seed will be tight. It may take a 10-0 season to be the 1 seed.

I agree. It will be tough between those 5 teams that you mentioned. I Hope When we play you all it isn't like the past two seasons, I'm not sure I can take much more of that. LOL

I wouldn't holds breath lol. You guys return a mass amount of starters. We return a lot of starters. Two great teams. A great rivalry. It'll be a fun night.

Bryce is definitely the starter unless something unexpected happens. I haven't been able to see him throw any, but based on last year, he's a great runner. That will provide a good dynamic for the offense this year.

Someone on the team told me he has a cannon. Many believe he should have started last year, no disrespect to Tanner hall though.

I like our Bears chances this year, but I see a big need for some young kids to step up on the O Line and D Line. We lost some really good lineman on both sides of the ball. We have the talent at the skill positions for sure and I think Spears will be a huge asset at QB both with his arm and legs. With the schedule we play it will be an exciting season!

We did lose a couple linemen, but at the same time we have some great guys coming back. Skill positions we can Match up with anyone in 2A in my opinion. And with playing Crockett and Letcher Central, power points up the wazoo!

Seems like turnovers were the big downfall for these guys last year, if I remember correctly in the playoff game against Tazewell both teams had around 5 to 7 turnovers a piece!

That's right. We tried to blame the cold weather but i'm not buying that. In the playoff game against glenvar we threw 6 picks and had atleast 1, maybe 2 fumbles and somehow were down 3 late in the fourth. It was for sure a problem.

Caught part of the Bears practice yesterday, mainly offense.. WR group going to be tough to cover, O line looks better than I expected but fairly young, good crop of running backs to rotate in and out. Hope the defense can keep us in ballgames and it will be a good season!

Offense wins games - defense wins championships.  I believe the ultimate success of the Bears will depend on the play of the defense.  Eight starters return.  If the defense plays as well as they did toward the end of last season, Union High will be a contender.  Reminder that Union's offensive unit had seven turnovers against a very good Glenvar team during the playoff game; yet the Bears D hung in there and made a game of it.  The score was 13-9 late in the 4th quarter (The defensive unit scored a safety and recovered a fumble that set up the Bears only TD).  I do think the Bears will have an exciting offense but success will be governed by defense.

The Bears did use some players both ways last season; but they had several defense only guys as well.  Of course the two main both way players this season will likely be the ends Mitchell and Barnett.  Both played TE and LB last year.  Both are 6'4" and 200 lb+.  Another potential two position Bear is Devin Summers.  He played at both the FB position and the LB spot last year.  Union will be very deep again and that will likely limit the number of players going both ways.

I'm with you on the defense, IMO Union's best defensive game of the year was against Glenvar. Because of the turnovers, it had to be! I caught practice again tonight and it was D night. I saw good size and speed and a bunch of kids flying to the ball. You will definitely see several guys going both ways. FBDevotee is right on with Mitchell and Barnett, I'll also add Noaks to that list as well (playing WR and S). Definitely a deep squad, I think we will see several guys as two-way starters but we will be able to sub to get them breathers...

Did you happen to notice who was playing at the Corners?
