GATE CITY @ RICHLANDS

Sure am glad this one is in Richlands.  You better never doubt them Devils aren't feeding that fire on that Cannon Ball some way or the other.  They like to get you to look past them or try to slip up on you.  Our 1st string better come ready to put 4 quarters of solid football together and get rid of some mistakes.  Wouldn't be surprised to see a little more passing out of that qb from the GC.  Should be a good old sober knocker, would expect nothing less.

It's finally here.  Time to see what everybody's really got.

A "bad" Gate City team is a good anybody else team. I bet their cheerleaders could hit as hard as some teams out East lol. I would not ever underestimate these guys. Don't want to play them in November or December.

They better bring something else besides what they brought to Grayson County friday night if you want to see any slobber knocking.....else GC will only be on the receiving end of if it. I sure hope they get it together so it will be a game worth watching! I'm gonna say:

Richlands: 48

Gate City: 20

Gate City will make strides towards the end of the year but just don't have the umpffff this year that they need in my opinion. I hope I'm wrong! Good luck to both teams!!

I sure hope you're right RiverRat about that score,  but it's still GC and until I see them play  I will still have mucho respect for any GC team.

Richlands looks good at certain parts of the game and has a lot of potential,  but they also have a lot of things they need to clean up.

The one thing I do LOVE about what I have seen from the Blues so far is the physicality of them !  They will and do head hunt,  and will HIT you !  I also like their play making ability.  I don't know how many long sustained drives they may have this year,  but they have several guys that can break a big play at any time.

But they do need to clean up several mistakes they have made,  but that is what preseason football is about,  so I hope to see better execution this Friday.

I have been hearing a lot out of Gate City from friends I have who live over that. I had been thinking they were down this year especially with the loss of the Heron kid. From what I am hearing though they have the second coming of Heron in a kid who has never played for them. I believe they said he was a standout freshman for.them on their basketball team. If it is who I think it is, he was a tough athlete vs Union.

Richlands has a great program but I don't think they are near as great as they need to be.

Gate City, also a great program, is not the same program it once was. From watching them perform vs Union when they have a good athlete they are very one dimensional and work that one athlete like a horse.

The Heron kid was their saviour last year. He is gone.

I believe this will be a tough one simply because it will be a good game between two strong programs who will start out with very mediocre teams.

If Richlands wants to prove their worth, they will win this game by 30. If they win by 10 or less then Richlands probably isn't that great of a team

Prediction:

Richlands 45

Gate City 21

It's too early for me to make a prediction. Like RiverRat said, the benefit game was not pretty. There's a good amount of injury concerns at GC and we're not exactly sure who is going to be on the field at Ernie Hicks on Friday night. GC had a strong showing vs Elizabethton, so this team has some potential. We're just not entirely sure who's gonna show up. I think either Richlands wins by at least 4 scores, or it's a one score game that could go either way. We'll see which GC team shows up.

Can I get some of what you're on? I didn't realize returning 15+ starters and a few transfers coming in who are already proving to be good players constituted as a mediocre team. This is largely the same team that was a play or two away from a state final last season.

I may be off, but I feel like your analysis of Richlands is wayyyyy off.

Gameday is talking about Mac McClung. He is a sophomore. Point guard in basketball. Freak athlete. Already throwing down windmill dunks.

You may remember his sister, Anna, who played soccer. She won too many awards to be mentioned and is without doubt the most dominant athlete at the high school level I have seen in person. Went to FSU and is at Tennessee now I believe.

His dad, Marcus, was a tight end for Virginia Tech. His grandfather, Ford, played at Tennessee. His uncle, Seth, was a relief pitcher for the Rays and Brewers. He definitely has the genes. As to whether or not he's a Caleb Herron, I don't believe he will be this year. Eventually he can be better IMO, but possibly in different ways. Time will tell. Does anyone know where they have him lined up?

I don't get how beating GC by 10 or less means you are not that great of a team. Usually beating them by any margin is a statement in itself. I can see either team winning. I give a slight edge to Richlands but if either team lays down then it could get ugly.

If both teams show up then the winner wins by a margin of a touchdown or less.

If the concerns of the GC people are justified then they are in trouble.

Personally I have a feeling GC wasn't showing all their cards and that they will be fine. Maybe not what they were last season but still GC.

How great do you think Richlands needs to be?

Usually Richlands is solid Week 1. They are extremely well coached and are always a huge challenge. If Richlands is close to what we saw last season, which I expect to see in Week 1 (and get better), than Richlands should probably be a two score favorite.

Personally I have a feeling GC wasn't showing all their cards

I'd really like this to be the case but that's not what the problem was. I don't think we showed all our cards, but GC's bread and butter has always been the power game. It didn't look like GC football Friday night.

I think we'll struggle Friday night, but if we can keep the injury bug away I think we'll be dangerous come playoff time. I had a lot more confidence after the Elizabethton scrimmage than I did after Friday night. Hopefully we'll have some fire.

At the Elizabethton scrimmage GC had McClung in space. Receiving out of the backfield, lined up in slot and WR. I don't recall if he took any direct hand offs from the backfield. He was VERY good in space. May not see it this year, but he WILL be a very special player if he continues to play and remains healthy.

Based ONLY on what I saw at the GC/Elizabethton scrimmage....GC has a good line and good skill players, but nearly all of them went both ways. They are not as explosive as last year, and they will wear down versus teams that are 2 platooning. Any injuries will be devastating because I didn't see that much on the bench.

I see Richlands winning by at least 3 scores, and since Union is playing Thursday, I hope to be there to get a peak at both in game action before we play them.

Planning to do the same myself!

The team that GC had on the field against Richlands last year is drastically different than the one this year. Richlands returns a lot. I see no reason why richlands can't pick them apart with short and quick passes as they did.

Offensively GC last the 2A Player of the year in Herron. Lost Evan Baker, Neth Gardner, Wesley Byrd, and a few lineman. Defensively they lost Rasnic to Lee High. They don't return the same caliber team that they had and furthemore they aren't nearly as battle tested. This game being week 1 gives Richlands a huge advantage. They win by double digits if they are going to be the team everyone expects them to be.

If Richlands has that many starters returning and that many good transfers then IF they are THAT good they should beat GC by 40. From what I hear in the BSG GC has nothing in the tank. But like what I'm hearing from GC and what you are telling me about Richlands it is all useless babble.

The ONLY real team in SWVA with ATHLETES galore is UNION. Many of those same ATHLETES are playing in the ARBYS CLASSIC this winter in basketbakl. Richlands has how many playing basketball? Probably none. They were SUPPOSED to be GREAT in basketball also and we know how that went last year. How many true ATHLETES does GC have playing football? The MCClung kid you mentioned? Thats all i know. At UNION they are EVERYWHERE.

Richlands doesn't have nothing and I'm sure they will prove me right Friday.

UNION will lay waste to both Richlands & GC this year. You have been warned. Best of luck to both though and no injuries.

When the BEARS start growling the Tornado winds will stop blowing and the Devils will be cold as ice.

UNION BEARS - The FUTURE is NOW!

Just stating my opinion but I believe I know what I am talking about.

Wow. You finally show your true colors.

Yes. Union has athletes. Congratulations.

Richlands has athletes as well. Atkinson and Howie and fast as lightning and Howie is 6'4.

Take off the orange and blue glasses and check what you just typed. You're likely to become the laughing stock of the board if you're wrong.

Oh, and this team has 5 players that i know of on the basketball team. And they are all juniors except for one. No one ever said last year would be the year Richlands was good. The "dream team" was entirely sophomore. And they lost 5 games by single digits. This year they will all be juniors and you add in Howie.

I can't wait to see how wrong you are, homer.

Please don't think all Union fans have this type of disrespect for Richlands/GC Ryan.

I know you guys don't. You have an amazingly classy fan base, sans one complete idiot.

We all know Union is good. Apparently everyone but him knows that's Richlands is good. I think the two teams will play twice this season. Wouldn't it be great to have a Union/Richlands state final?
