Union at Central

Thoughts? This has become a pretty good rivalry recently in all sports. Hatred from both sides. Union has more overall team talent but it's at Central and the Warriors always seem to play the Bears tougher than many think. Central gave the game away last year at Union, so don't be shocked if the district trophy ends up at Central High.

If Union can slow down the QB it's gonna be a long night for Central. Also can anyone tell me about the parking at Central, I was told you have to park at wal mart and catch a shuttle up the hill but that has to be a joke right.

There is *some* parking up at the field. But yes, if you're not there early you're gonna be parking at Walmart and shuttling up.

Thanks Ryan I was hoping someone was joking. When you went do you remember about what time the parking lot filled up because I hate getting there too early

I got there late. Left Blacksburg at 4:30 and was rushing to get to Wise in time. I actually got to park up top, but it was wayyyyyy back in a field.

Where exactly is Central's field at? We're thinking about taking in this game.

Depends on what side you're coming from. If you're coming up Hawthorne, which is the intersection below Ingles and the cancer center, then you go up the hill, once past Hillcrest Lanes (bowling alley), take 1st right. You'll see the marquee sign for Central High School, turn right and go up the hill. If you come in like you're going to Walmart, you can either keep straight through the light past Applebees and ride the rode around, then take 1st left until you see marquee. Or you can turn left at the light past Applebees but stay in outer lane and ride it around and turn right at Advance America. You'll see Burkes and go straight through stop sign until you see marquee. Turn left to go up hill. Hope it's not too confusing.

Thanks guys. Been about 3 years since I've been up that way. We might consider the shuttle since my wife is not quite 2 months from a knee injury. Went to a game in Florida a couple of weeks ago where we had to walk a long way, but it was all flat ground. Look forward to checking out Central's digs.

I know Central always plays Union tough (except for 2013), and they have a solid team, but I think Union wins this one comfortably. I also think the turf field will highlight their all around team speed. However, the Bears had better come ready to play because Central won't be a pushover.  I'm looking forward to it.

I've now seen Union three times (GC, Richlands and Central) and Central twice (Grundy and Union). Union amazes me, they looked like the Patriots on offense against Richlands and like a jv team on defense. Against GC, I never felt like they were emotionally invested in the game and honestly got lucky to win and last night their defense looked like the 85 Bears (minus two plays). Very bizzare play calling at the goal line last night, Union should have won that game by 4-5 touchdowns.

Moving forward Central is going to have to diversife its offense. Mullins can be THE MAN but he can't be the only man, that doesn't fly against good teams. The Warriors program is moving in the right direction, if they don't get a stupid personal foul penalty when they had the ball at the 5 yard line they may be in a position to tie the game late. Central's defense is stout up the middle but they lack overall team speed, I can see how Richlands gashed them.

It'll be fun to watch what Owens does with that program moving forward, anybody close to the program know if they have talent coming up through the system?

If Union ever puts it all together (defense like last night and offense like against Richlands) watch out. They may need a couple of those games in the playoffs, they have to be encouraged by their defense the last two weeks, they've allowed eight total points, two while the offense was the on the field. With Eastside next week, the defense should take a ton of momentum to Letcher Co. (who I think is the last team on the schedule that can beat them).

Any chance these two play in the playoffs? That would be fun to watch.

Couldn't have said it better myself. For the first time in Union's history, the DC out coached the OC.... that was hard to say. The D played lights out. The offense moved up and down the field, but called some of the most IGNORANT plays inside the 5 I have ever seen. A single toss sweep could have gotten them a TD on any of those possessions. You DO NOT run up the middle when the other team is sending they're WHOLE freaking defense between the tackles. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I will certainly give Central's DC credit. He must of been tapped into Union's headset because he knew exactly what they were calling. Sad that the Bears were that predictable. 12 plays on 3 possessions inside the 3 yard line and you walk away with nothing.

On a side note...it should not be that cold in October. I would hate to play a night game there in November or December. That wind was relentless.

I would like to play central again also. No way game should of been that close, but if Travis can't control some of the players attitudes were not gonna go to far anyway. I have never seen so many penalties in my life, they more worried about running their mouths than playing ball.

Wise has a tendency to bring that out in the Union players, I would wager that it was not only the Union kids running their mouths. No excuse for the penalties, but Wise has been known in the past to needle and say things to Union players.

I agree with u but one of the kids for Union are running out of chances and I would hate to see something happen. The refs should have got the 2 coaches together and put a stop to it. I know both teams were running their mouths but we have a chance to go deep in the playoffs and need to play a little smarter.

Agreed. The player in question absolutely has to stay out of trouble no matter what the opposing team is saying to him.

The parking situation wasn't bad. We got there at 6:20 and parked in the 2nd row in the field above the school. Nice school, beautiful setting with the sun going down, and a really nice facility. That said, I didn't much care for watching the game there. The fence area is way too far away from the field, and I don't know that watching from the stands would be any better. Seemed odd to be watching a high school game from that distance. On a side note, if I ever do go back, I'm going to try one of those taco salads. After seeing several people with them, I was wishing we hadn't stopped for supper before the game.

Worst place to watch a high school football game that I've seen. Like you said the distance is too far, whoever the architech was on this must have never seen a football stadium before. They need to put in new bleachers and add bleachers and they need to be elevated. The sightlines are pitiful.

Seemed like were ever u stood u were at least 30 yards from the field. The nice arctic air up there made it even worse, good luck to anyone who has to play them in November. I was told that At Ridgeview u were further back than at wise, but I can't imagine that being true.
