School District History

So as many of you know I really enjoy local school/football history and learning as much as possible about ho things have developed. Im curious as to the various districts each of our local schools have been in.

A few of things im unsure of; what year Divisions were introduced (I know late 80s), what year the "Rye Cove Rule " took effect(2008?), what year the current Group system took effect(2009 I believe) and what was the district that existed before the BDD? Clinch Valley?

As info is posted I will edit this post.

Im interested in School, District and Group/Division or both and years if you know them. Basically where they were, how big they were and when they moved. Some schools have moved around a lot while others have been pretty consistent. I will start things off,

Divisions started in 1986. I don't remember Haysi ever being in the LPD tho. I think Ervinton left the LPD around 1984 or 1985...I do know that 1985 was the last year Powell Valley had them on the schedule so it was probably 1985. This page used to be helpful but idk how much is still there.

Contact Donnie Jenkins on facebook and he can tell you anything you need to know. He is the guy that does "Wise County Football History 1923-" on facebook...just message that page and he will hook you up. He has written multiple books on the subject.

Thanks Beast. Im pretty sure Haysi was LPD WAY back(before most local teams started playing football but I could be wrong. I think for a while they were in the Clinch Valley(?) District but idk the years or if that was the name of the district.

While Narrows was in the NRD they were AA correct?   I assume since Divisions have been in place Narrows was D1

Blues Man, VA High wasnt D4 for just one year. Do you have any idea how long they were D4? Was it one cycle of for a few years?

Thanks for the responses so far

I thought Haysi went from the Lonesome Pine to the BDD in 79. When they did division one and division two they were division two until 2007. (I think)

Unless Haysi played a limited schedule there is no way they were ever in the LPD.  PV and Appy both were in the LPD for the duration of the district until they consolidated.  PV's first ever meeting with Haysi was in the 1985 Playoffs.  Prior to a playoff game in 1980, Appalachia had only faced Haysi twice (1963,1964).  Looks to me like if Haysi was in the LPD that they would have played both of these schools on a yearly basis.

Here's links to both PV and Appy's yearly results up until 1999:

Youre not thinking far enough back Beast, were talking 1950. Haysi had photos of a basketball teams in the main hallway that said LPD and State Champions.  WAY before we were playing football which didnt happen at Haysi until 1964.

Ugly, there was a different district in there. Im 99% sure it was called the Clinch Valley, sort of the precursor to the BDD. Which explains why Haysi doesnt show up on LPD football history, they never played football in the LPD.

Lee High

1989-2006 Highlands District, Group AA (Div. 4 all years I believe)

2007-2012 Clinch Mountain District, Group A

2013-present Mountain District/Clinch Mountain Conf., Group AA

Whew....I had to dig deep for all that history on Lee, haha.  Now as for the longer history of Pennington, Jonesville, Keokee, Flatwoods, Dryden, St. Charles, etc., that's a different story.

Ugly did post LPD to BDD in 79, he is missing the CVD in the middle.

Im bad to come off as a jerk when posting in this type of thread(lots of info and my mind is in 100 different places), if I come across that way I DO NOT mean to

Group II...  AA?

I guess Group A or whatever for overall, but I was looking the record book and basketball was listed as Group II, III, IA, IB, up until the 70s.  I think both Jonesville and Pennington were in the Cumberland/Region D through the 70s/80s.  Pennington was Div. 2 in football through those '86-88 years and Jonesville was Div. 1.  Of course Jonesville won the Div. 1 State title in '88, semifinalist in '87, Pennington played in the Div. 2 semifinals both of those years.

Good luck on flatwoods, I am highly curious on that one seeing as how it's in my backyard

Just found it. The Clinch Valley District consisted of Honaker, Lebanon, Castlewood, St. Paul, Twin Springs, Pocahontas, Whitewood, Garden, Hurley, Council (which didn't field a football team those years) and Haysi.

I may be mistaken but I think Ervinton was in the CVD as well.
