Burton versus Galax

Spurlin, #44 for Galax, is their best player. Spurlin is the leader on offense and defense and he will knock the snot bubbles out of you. Galax has a strong line and are very fundamentally sound but Burton should be able to match up with Galax's line. Harris is a good back but may be hobbled because he got up gimpy in the 4th quarter against Hurley. I think he got a high ankle sprain last night in the late 4th quarter but #1 Peoples that replaced Harris is a good running back. Galax can pass when needed....screen pass...out and up nothing major.

Hurley was really aggressive and loaded the box. I know that Harris had good yardage last night but he got most of that on 2 runs. Hurley got Galax out of rhythm and didn't really establish their offense. Galax had a lot of 3 and out.

I think I would go with Galax by a score of 28-24. It will be a good game and could go Burton's way because they are tough.

This will be the game I go to this week. Galax has been an incredible program over the past 5-6 years but have met their demise vs old Region D teams. JIB is very different than the teams Galax has faced from the coalfields in the past.

Im looking forward to the battle in the trenches. Imo Galax will have the athletes to match up with JIB on the edges. One thing JIB doesnt have are big, strong backs to match up with Spurlin.  The Raiders have some speed/athleticism but no size except on the line.

Honestly ive hoped for the past 5-6 weeks that this game would happen and im really excited to see it.

In my opinion, Spurlin is the best player in the MED, potentially SWVA.  Harris gets the glory because of the yards and touchdowns he racks up.  Spurlin does the little things that lead to victories and, yes, THEVOLS, he will knock the snot bubbles out of you.

Believe me, as good a football player, wrestler and baseball player as he is, he is a much better kid!

I don't know a lot about Burton but given what Galax has experienced the past three seasons when venturing into old Region D territory late in the playoffs, they better be prepared for a physical, hard fought match-up.  No easy games left by this time of the season.

Devante McKenney was the lanky kid you speak of.

That Clintwood team was loaded as well.  The difference in the game, in my opinion, was special teams.  Galax, out-athleted everyone they stepped on the field with that season and used that advantage on special teams to put teams away.  Clintwood masterfully used the overly aggressive special teams play against Galax with delayed, directional and short punts and Galax didn't adjust to it at all.  They even recovered one kickoff Galax watched bounce.  I also feel like Galax went up 14-0 early and started celebrating on the sidelines.  Galax didn't play a competitive game all season until the championship game.  They didn't figure out how to respond until late in the fourth quarter.

That is in no way to say Clintwood shouldn't have won the game.  They earned it and deserved it!  It was a first hand lesson in traditional coal-field football.

To an extent, I think that is still in the heads of the Galax coaching staff when playing the old Region D schools.

Galax vs JI Burton will be a premier matchup between two storied football programs in SWVA. I have seen Burton play, and I was impressed with their team. Burton is well gifted with a " large " offensive line, 3 good running backs, and a good QB. Their defense is stout, will bend , but does not break. I have been impressed with Burton all season. Using the ole cliché "them ole boys look  good in warm ups, and on the funny side....."One coach told his opposing coach that his lineman was not fat, but just easy to see".

Galax is rollin' into Norton loaded for bear. They will be the most talented team JIB has seen since game 1 with Union. Galax is for real. I am not going to say that I have seen Galax play, because I have not. What I do know, is that Galax has been impressive by competing with a very strong schedule and not backing down from anyone. Galax will bring a very strong running game, and very well coached team to Norton. Their backs run hard, and just keep coming after you. This matchup is one that a lot of folks have been waiting to see, well folks, the waiting is over come this weekend. Who ever you pick for this one, you can't go wrong. There will be no upset, as both teams are favorites by football fans. This is THE game in D1W in SWVA. Enough said, now lets play some football !

As far as THE game, Radford and George Wythe both beat Galax. Might not do it again but just might so THE 1A WEST GAME OF THE YEAR is in Wytheville @ 2 PM Saturday.

Galax has had a very tough schedule. 4 losses were to Glenvar (10-0) 20-15, Radford (7-3) 33-27OT, GW (9-1) 28-27, and Giles (9-1) 34-25. Most theyve lost by is 9 points to Giles. They've definitely been battle tested!
