Not commenting on the domination but their smash mouth styles.

Galax's coach has established an excellent o-line with experience that can only improve.

Meanwhile belfry does this(look at the linemen) http://www.wymt.com/content/sports/2015-WYMT-All-Mountain-Football-Awards-363509981.html

Now the question, can Galax build to be a powerhouse each year, or will it's coach move on to a larger stage.

I am not sure "larger stage" applies to Coach Dixon.  The stage doesn't get much larger than the NFL.  He seems content and happy here and is making a huge impact on the lives of the kids in our community, which appears to be much more important to him than self gratification.  I can't imaging he would leave Galax until his children and step-children are grown.  His wife is from Fries as well, that may play a role in any decision he might make.

Didn't know his wife was from fries, he is from charville, thought he would move out of swva and into somewhere that Richmond recognizes after 5 or so years.

He was born in Charlottesville but raised in Jamestown, NC and attended Ragsdale High School, which is only about an hour from Galax.

Then galax has a stud, man I wish lee or tw could stumble onto someone like that.

Tw would have had some success the last several season with their size.

Dixon as done a great job at Galax... I remember watching Floyd County destroy Galax year in and year out, when I followed the Buffs for a while....Total turn around up there.... If you like to see fundamentally sound football, they are the team to watch.  That will keep you in games, even when you are overmatched.

I don't know a thing about Belfry so I couldn't elaborate.

I have said before, a lot Galax students live within reasonable walking distance of the school. Thise who don't have any number of options to get to the high school or recreation center. That close proximity is an advantage. Galax has 5 gyms, 8 baseball fields and numerous weight rooms around the community all at their disposal.

They have always had talent and lots of it. Galax has never had leadership in coaching positions to get anything out of the talent.

It's funny you should mention "stumbling onto". Dixon was an assistant coach at Carroll under Tom Hale before coming to Galax. Hale refussed to listen to anything Dixon had to say and Dixon left after only one season.

That is a blessing to have all of those resources.   Many in SWVA are probably very jealous of that.

They'd still find a way to get rid of them or simply pass a good one over for someone already in the system.  Everything has been "in-house" for several years now, probably won't be much to change that soon.   Hard to come across these types, pay doesn't attract many and Lee's reputation doesn't help either.

Galax seeks NFL grant for football field
By Shannon Watkins

Galax High School’s capital fundraising campaign for the football field through NFL grants is bolstered by the fact that Coach Mark Dixon is a former player for the Miami Dolphins.

GHS football coach Mark Dixon is a former Miami Dolphins player, and the school system has approached the team’s alumni group about a $700,000 grant for improvements to the high school football field.

“Believe me, it is very difficult to get a phone number that goes to the Miami Dolphins,†said Superintendent Bill Sturgill at the Galax School Board’s Jan. 12 meeting. “There’s not an email address on the website. The number is an answering machine, and calling it daily does not get you anywhere.â€

While the board laughed sympathetically, he continued. “I’d like to thank Mark Dixon for all he’s done for us – not just winning the state football championship, but he was able to get me a contact within the Dolphins’ organization, which led to a conversation with their administrator in charge of alumni. And so, they now have our request, which will go to the board of directors for alumni.

“They may send us $15, or they may send us $700,000 — and I asked for $700,000!†Sturgill said.

When he asked the person in charge of alumni grants, Nat Board, for guidelines, according to Sturgill, “He said, ‘Is it under a million dollars?’ And I said ‘yes.’ And he said, ‘Well, ask for it all.’â€

“I think a Dolphins logo would look good on you!†joked Board Member Stewart Merdian.

Sturgill said there was also some talk about making a football field fundraiser the senior project this year, possibly through online crowdfunding site GoFundMe.

“It’s all about getting the message out. The students know that and they know how to connect. We’re excited about the possibility of a contribution from the Dolphins; they were excited as well. They really like to support their alumni,†Sturgill said.

“It’s interesting. We fall under the jurisdiction of the Redskins, and there is a $10,000 grant that we can apply for through the Redskins specifically for a turf field, so we’re doing that, also, through the city with the help of [Galax City Grant Administrator] Brenda Marrah.â€
