Award Winners
Virginia Top 80
By Jamie Shaw

Mr Top 80
6’8†2019 Oscar Tshiewbe
Mountain Mission

If we had to choose one player, who came out of nowhere, and totally took the camp by storm it was Tshiewbe. Tshiewbe came to the United States in late November and was able to sit behind Arizona State signee Jethro Tshisumpa and West Virginia signee Maciej Bender. Even as only a freshman, Tshiewbe was a man amongst men. He had a very active motor, chased every rebound, and dunked everything. In a camp with multiple older players carrying Power 5 offers, it was Tshiewbe that everyone walked away raving about.

Mr Station
6’6†2017 Ben Stanley
Millwood School

The Mr Station award goes to the player who not only took the entirety of the camp seriously, but took to the coaching and asked questions to improve. Junior Ben Stanley is a very athletic lefty, who plays with an all-out motor and is able to defend multiple areas. Stanley has an athletic frame, who could just as easily line up on the football field. He is very active in the mid-range and a vocal player who is eager to get better. This will be a big summer for Stanley.

Mr Hustle
6’9†2017 Ejike Obinna
Virginia Academy

Obinna came into camp with multiple Power 5 offers, and a kid that many scouts were watching and many players were targeting. Obinna came in with a great motor throughout camp. Obinna runs the floor hard and crashes the boards with a purpose. Obinna is a consensus Top 150 player and carries ACC, Big East, AAC offers. Having grown another inch and really chiseled up his frame, expect Obinna to be hot ticket for Power 5 coaches this summer.

Mr Defense
7’2†2017 Brendan Newton
First Assembly

There is no doubt that Brendan Newton is big. This camp, he came out to play with a purpose. Newton challenged everything at the rim. Sometimes he was unsuccessful, but the majority of the time he either blocked or altered the shot. Newton, stands a lengthy 7’2†and his game is developing. He runs well and he is active around the rim. While he will need to continue getting strong and keeping his endurance up, there is no doubting that he protects the basket.

Mr Playmaker
6’ 2018 Mac McClung
Gate City

Along with Tshiewbe, every person at the event walked away talking about Mac McClung. Not many people knew about him coming in, so with the toughness and explosion in which he leads a team, it was not surprising that he was a big hit. McClung has a tough handle in the half court, with a quick first step getting into the lane, and toughness and explosion as he gets to the rim. He is one that is sure to really make a splash in recruiting this summer. A lot to like in his game.

No idea. Some sort of camp that was held recently at VA Tech....I believe.  I found it on Mac's Mother's FB Page. Thought some might find it interesting. Maybe not.

Google tells me that: "The Virginia Top 80 is the most prestigious showcase camp in the state. In this annually held camp, we utilize scouts, coaches, and programs to help us identify the 80 best players Virginia has to offer. Virginia is traditionally a basketball hotbed, and that tradition is not slowing down anytime soon."

NO idea if any of that is true. Again.........just sharing.

I seen that Ervin was there for the event too but didn't really hear anything about him. Kinda suprised that Mac was one of the talks of the event. I know he's a talented player....but didn't really think he would create that much of a buzz.

You're not gonna believe this, but it's not. The most prestigious camp is held in Charlottesville, VA annually in the summer...

His mom's a very nice lady.  I spoke with her at the Arby's and then she came over and spoke with me after the first Gate City/Ridgeview game this year.

It's definitely a family of athletes, Mac's sister plays soccer at UT.

I've never heard of these camps either... the only one I ever hear anything about is that ABCD camp where all the top recruits in the nation go to.

6' as a sophomore guard is a decent size.  He doesn't need to be 6'3 or 6'4 to play college basketball.

And along those lines - is he a redshirted sophomore?  How about Ervin?  That guy certainly didn't look like he was 14 years old to me.

UVAO............why wouldn't I believe you? Was very clear in my post that I have no idea if any of the stuff was true. Was just posting it because I thought it was interesting.

MHSALUM..........I see his Dad a lot. Would GUESS he is around 6'3". Hell.....everyone is tall compared to me.He played linebacker at VA Tech. His brother, Mac's Uncle, played baseball for the Tampa Bay Rays (I believe). Mac's sister was the soccer player of the year in VA.......twice. She went to FSU on a soccer scholarship, but has transferred to UT. Family is loaded with athletic genes.

'Twas a figure of speech, nothing more.

Phenom Hoop Report is supposedly the top source for basketball exposure in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. It's run by Rick Lewis. A lot of the names you'll see from the Virginia list will be from private schools or prep schools throughout the state. They get the rankings from watching kids play at their camps as well as AAU tournaments and who they see play during the school year. They spend more time during the actual season watching holiday tournaments so that they may be able to critique more players at one time.

Pretty good offers already for Mac considering hes only going to be a junior this upcoming season. Kinda curious to see what kind of offers he ends up with by the time his senior season rolls around. If he can pack on some solid mass yet not lose his quickness or any of his athletic ability I think he could draw some serious interest down the stretch. Congrats to him and Luke both on their scholarship offers.

Kent State is a pretty good offer...was thinking they made some noise a few years back in the tournament. ETSU isnt a bad offer either....and neither is Miami of Ohio and Central Arkansas. Considering his recruiting didnt take off til this past spring I'd say it's pretty impressive....they've not got enough film on the kid yet for the big schools to put an offer on the line. If hes developed as much as the scout guys claim he has this summer he will get a few legit D1 offers before his senior year is over. He had some dominant performances for Team Loaded VA and they took second nationally losing to a super talented team of out Georgia. Irvin will also get some good offers...possibly major D1. He's a pure shooter.

It will be fun getting to see Radford again. Im sure you guys will be seeing plenty of Graham, Union, Richlands, and GC. Id about guarantee you'll be dealing with Martinsville and Dan River at some point as well as you guys played MHS last year in regular season.
