SXSW 557 Report Share Posted October 19, 2016 This may be of interest to some of you or none of you. I like to keep up with this kind of thing. If you are a S.W. Va. High School and need games to fill out your schedule this may be a good time to contact these teams. The TSSAA released the numbers for all six classes but the regions want be released for a few more weeks. I have kept it to just the Northeast Tennessee teams. Class 6A : Science Hill (Johnson City) 2,248. Dobyns Bennett (Kingsport) 2,208. Jefferson County 2,185. Morristown West 1,551. 6A is enrollment over 1,509. Science Hill and DB are the fifth and sixth biggest high schools in the state. Class 5A: Volunteer (Church Hill) 1,152. Cherokee (Rogersvillie) 1,161. Cocke County (Newport) 1,114. Tennessee High (Bristol,Tn.) 1,190. David Cockett (Jonesbourgh) 1,247. Daniel Boone (Gray) 1,314. Morristown East 1,472. 5A is 1103-1508. Class 4A: Sullivan South 887. Sullivan Central 897. Greenevillie 913, Grainger 918, Sullivan East 941, Elizabethton 819, Elizabethton is classified 3A but has already requested to play up in 4A. 4A is 822-1102 Class 3A: Gatlinburg-Pittman 560, Chuckey-Doak 618, West Greene 621, Johnson County (Mountain City) 638 Pigeon Forge 741, Northview Academy (Kodak) 743, Unicoi County (Erwin) 796. Class 3A is 557-821. Class 2A: Cosby 391, North Greene 400, Sullivan North 492, South Greene 510, Happy Valley 541. 2A is 376-556. Class 1A: Cloudland 223, Unaka 341. greatwhitemp36 25 Report Share Posted October 19, 2016 Class 1A: Cloudland 223, Unaka 34. Schools have until October 25th to inform the TSSAA if they will seek to play up in class, so far Elizabethton is the only school so far in our area to do so. I will post the regions when they become available. I am going to assume that Unaka is a typo at
swva_havok_fan 1,261 Report Share Posted October 19, 2016 I am going to assume that Unaka is a typo at 34 No wonder J. I. Burton beat them so bad. The entire school plays on the team...

SXSW 557 Author Report Share Posted October 19, 2016 Nope, not according to the TSSAA press release from yesterday, they have 341. They had trouble finding eleven players for a long time practiced most of spring and summer with 15 or less.
SXSW 557 Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2016 Elizabethton playing up from 3A to 4A, and North Greene from 2A to 3A are the only Northeast Tennessee teams to inform TSSAA they will play up. There was a lot of movement in the Knoxville area Knox Catholic, Seymour, Carter and Gibbs all moved from 4A to 5A. Alcoa who had previously announced that they would move from 3A to 4A decided to stay 3A.
redtiger 1,740 Report Share Posted October 26, 2016 Just curious but whats the reasoning for those schools to request to play up? As a group I don't understand the Knoxville area schools, travel isint an issue and theyre keeping the same competition locally. Don't understand the reasoning for Elizabethton or North Greene either. Wheres Hampton?

1inStripes 932 Report Share Posted October 26, 2016 Hampton is 1A if I am not mistaken.
SXSW 557 Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2016 Hampton is Region1 2A with Sullivan North, Happy Valley, Cloudland and Unaka are the only 1A schools west of Knoxville area. The 5A schools in Knoxville area are Knox Catholic, Oak Ridge , Campbell Co., Powell, Halls, Karns, West, South-Doyle, Central, Clinton and Sevier County plus Carter, Seymour and Gibbs playing up with Knox Catholic. How would you like that region every year.

Yeah, it's right off 19E just past where you can turn on 321 to go towards Mountain City or Boone.
SXSW 557 Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2016 @ redtiger Elizabethton has always tried to play up. They have had the same problem DB has had until recently, no competition in their district and short playoff runs. They also avoid Alcoa by moving up. Alcoa will be a title contender every year and probably win it most year,. 3A is weak. North Greene is the head scratcher I guess their thinking is staying with the other Greene County schools Chuckey Doak & West Greene and having to play Unicoi Co. and Johnson Co. isn't bad either
redtiger 1,740 Report Share Posted October 26, 2016 I know where Hampton is geographically, I meant on the original post. The Bulldogs are absent. I should have worded that better. I noticed that Elizabethton would be avoiding Alcoa right after I posted. South Greene is 2A and West Greene is 3A, but I guess the other competition would be closer for North Greene is they moved up.
SXSW 557 Author Report Share Posted October 26, 2016 North Greene hasn't ever been competitive in football still don't get the move up. I left Hampton out of original post, my mistake, they have 451 students. redtiger
