Ridgeviews 7/8 team did pretty well, not sure of exact record but they won some close games over Lee, GC and Union.

Centrals 7/8 went undefeated and none of their games were very close. Union, RV, Lee, GC and others were on the schedule.

Rye Cove only lost 1 game, not sure of schedule strength (im assuming Cumberland schools).

I hear Abingdon had a solid team but im not sure of their record.

I am not sure what they are being called these days but the Galax middle school/8th grade/JV team finished 6-2.  Galax lost both games to Radford, who has an impressive squad coming up.  If that group stays together, Radford will be contenders for the next few years.

Graham's 7/8 team won their first game of the season against Marion.  Then got smacked in the mouth every game after that.  If the principal decides to bring back the same two coaches again next year Greg Mance will have several "recruits" headed his way.

I don't think the JV won a game.

Tazewell's 8th grade team went 8-0 and from what I heard they didn't have a close game all season. Anybody get to see them?

Yes I got to see them on a couple of occasions.  Once when they beat Graham in a blow out and when they beat Richlands.  Tazewell's 8th grade team is made up of several very talented hold backs.  Their coach has worked tirelessly with this team in the weight room and on the field.  They go to 7 on 7's during the preseason and are attending a big tournament near Nashville in a couple of weeks.  If they stay together and continue to grow they should be the best thing Tazewell has produced in many years.  Unfortunately for Tazewell I just don't see the whole group staying together.  Their HS program is in the toilet and isn't showing any signs of life.

Most of Tazewell's 8th grade team worked out with the high school kids during weight training and summer workouts. The coaches have been involved and worked with these kids quite a bit this year. They run the same type of offense as the high school and the program is finally building from the middle school up, so the future is bright.

I think these kids will stick together, it's one of the things they keep preaching. Stick together we can get it done!

You will see a heavy dose of these kids getting playing time next year as freshmen as well.

Patience is the key to getting Tazewell's program going and coach has it heading in the right direction.

Gotta see the Bulldogs play and came away overly impresseed. Strongly believe the future of Tazewell football has plenty of light at the end of the tunnel. See this being a team starting several freshmen next year as they were dominant for eighth graders.

I'm not convinced playing several freshmen next year will help Tazewell out in the long run.  For the past several years Richlands has played their JV team in part of the 3rd and 4th quarters for most of their games.  In each of these games the score is obviously one sided, therefore the pressure of getting a "W" is not on their back. This has helped them out tremendously in the long run.  In Tazewell's case over the next couple of years the pressure will be on the back of those freshmen to get a win.  Which will amount to a lot of pressure over time.  People that don't understand the game automatically assume their success in the 8th grade will follow them directly into HS.  Expecting 9th and 10th graders to play with varsity kids week in and week out is setting the bar pretty high.  Given Tazewell's recent history of kids transferring to other schools, coaching changes, etc.  Wouldn't they benefit more from gradually working their way into the HS system? No matter what I would like to see these kids get a taste of winning and bringing some pride back to their community.

I remeber getting beat all the time by Richlands and Tazewell during my middle school years. But during high school I remember only losing once to each team in 4 years. Yes you can see upcoming talent but I don't think that's a good measurement on possible success in the future.

I think future success is always dependent on coaching and how that talent is developed once they start playing varsity. Obviously going from middle school coaches to playing for Glynn Carlock was a huge difference in knowledge and coaching.

I know Abingdon's 8th grade team went 6-3 but that isn't indicative of the talent level in that group.  There is some serious talent in the middle school.  JV maybe went undefeated, I cant really say because they split the squad a couple of times and played all freshman one place and all sophmores at another.  They may have lost one somewhere though.  I just cant recall.  Anyone remember one?

Richlands had a real good middle school team this year. They only lost one game this season. Good quarterback, some good looking 7th graders, and probably the best running back in the 8th grade for this area.

This. 6-1 with the lose loss coming to Tazewell. Really good team down there. The cupboard is not dry.

It didn't used to be when you had guys like Chuck Louthan and Ronnie Duncan coaching.

What happened to the coaches from the year before? Didn't they win some ball games?

Yes they did win some games and the kids improved as the year went on.  Unfortunately, the head coach from last year got married and moved to Roanoke.  It's my understanding one of the assistants from last year didn't want to coach again and the other wasn't asked to come back.

I knew one of the coaches. He played at Tazewell. Was he the one they didn't ask to come back? Seems odd given how they won last year and the bottom fell out this year.

Yes he was the one they didn't ask to come back.  Why? I have no idea. The coaches that were brought in this year were hired the day before practice started.  So to be fair to them I wasn't a whole lot of time to prepare.  I'm not sure if they would've had 2 years to prepare things would've been different though.  I guess we'll see what happens next year.

Don't read to much into eighth grade ball. It can be very deceiving.

I agree. I used to put quite a bit of stock into 8th grade ball and guessing when the varsity would be good again. However, for years Pennington Gap was the toughest team I remember GC playing in 8th grade and it wasn't even close. Would have expected Lee to be a powerhouse with those kids at some point at least.....yet nothing would ever come of it. (Nothing against Lee and you fans) I honestly could never figure that one out. Didn't know if alot of those kids just chose not to play varsity ball or what the deal was. Maybe this is an example of an exception and not the rule.

I've been on both sides of that. I played on a undefeated 8/9th grade team that went on to be pretty good and I helped coach a 8/9 team that literally didn't grow after 9th grade and struggled at the varsity level. It's hard to judge but it's fun to talk about!
