Honaker baseball

A lot of backlash around Honaker today. I personally feel that he should have retired at the end of last season after breaking the all time win record and being inducted into the VHSL HOF, instead of being asked to step down by the administration!

What's the real reason Harding stepped down? If the man wanted to stay as head coach he should've been allowed to do so after the success he's had.

Have you watched a Honaker game in the past 3 years? Harding has not "coached" in a while, rather sat in the dugout and collected wins. Honaker was imploding last year from the inside out from what I hear. Assistant coaches were basically running the show and mostly did not get along.

Regardless, the man has had an impressive career and has achieved everything he probably wanted to. I looked for him to step down post HOF induction but I guess he wanted to come back for another year.

A great coach for a long time; however, with his health, it was time to go a new direction.  All great things must come to an end.  I wish Tom the best and hope his health improves, but it's time to move on with Honaker baseball.

Will have to say Coach Harding was and no doubt still is a class act and hate to see him gone from the diamond. Never knew too much about him until the last couple years but I can say he was respected by the Chilhowie players and coaches as well. Good luck in the future Coach.

I thought this season went pretty good. Went extra innings with the eventual state champion in the playoffs. Have pretty much the whole team back next year and I thought the coaching staff did a tremendous job. Excited about this coming year I think it will be like the 2011 team that won state.

This past year no. Next year top 5 hitters and pitchers return 4 of them seniors who have started since freshmen year. Don't forget 2011 state champs got beat 11-0 in playoffs the year before and lost to Richlands by 10 runs the year they did win it. Just got hot at the right time. It wasn't an unbeatable juggernaut until the playoffs started.

You show me me a pitcher that compares to Derrick Murphy Chaz Miller Corey Brown Austin Kiser (freshman at the time rarely used) all of those guys with the exception of murphy carried really big bats in a stacked line-up along with jordan dye. Honaker returns a lot yes but just because they are going to be a senior/vetern heavy team dosent compare them talent wise to that 11or even the 09 team witch was probably better than both of them combined!

We agree on something. 09 was the best team in honaker baseball history. Loaded lineup 1-9 had kids on the bench that would've started and hit in the top half of lineup most years. Glory days it will never be back there again. Credit for 2011 getting hot and winning it but they did lay a couple eggs during the season. 2009 was juggernaut start to finish had some bad luck in state semi and Chatham was so loaded that year may not have won anyway but what a great team that was.

Yea I played on that 09 team. Alot of the players on the bench was the leftovers to the championship team in 11. That why I was saying you can't compare next year's team to them because in all honesty may 2 kids tops off the current roster would see playing time on either of those teams!

Bad luck was not the cause in the 09 state semis for Honaker. Harding said in the Region D tournament that the GC win was a fluke, GC proved in the state semis it wasn't a fluke. But yes the 09 Honaker team was good, but GC was better, not lucky. 2 losses that season, and both to us. It may have been different the second time around if Harding didn't call the first loss a fluke. But we didn't forget what he said we when played Honaker in Radford. Plus Hughes was sawing off Honaker batters with a 50mph dead arm curve that game.

The Luck play was the big 1st basemen holding runner on 1st with 1 out and the bases loaded someone on our team hit a missle that should have been a 3 run double and the big kid extended as far as he could and caught it for a double play. He had no reason to be holding a runner on in that situation. I remember sitting in the stands and looking at my son and daughter telling them it wasn't our day after that happened.  I consider that luck but y'all had a good team those games could've went either way back then. Great games a lot of great players playing in them.

We just called that smart baseball.

Our reasoning on holding that 1st base baserunner on is to keep him honest. You don't want a baserunner to have a 45ft lead with the bases loaded or runners on 1st and 2nd. In the event of a ball hit in the gap somewhere that few feet you kept that runner from leading could result in a bang bang at 3rd or home and give yourself to get an out. We did it to limit damage. And we did it all season.

Estepp was just in the right place at the right time.

But baseball around here isn't even played like that anymore. It's all about kids driving their batting averages up and not working as a team. Swva baseball has drastically went down hill since in the last 7-8 years. I haven't watched a game in 2 seasons. The pitiful downfall of GC baseball has slowly made me fall out of love with HS baseball. It's just not the same.

We didn't play our best in Bristol that year everybody knows that! In Radford GC was the better team. You can't loose to somebody twice in one year and say you were better. That GC team was absolutely loaded. The ball Keene hit and Estep snagged was game changing BUT when your right fielder miss judges a POP UP runs i n dives looks like a circus THAT is what looses those kind of games. Also throwing Hughes (4 hole hitter if I recall correctly) a 3-1 fastball that he deposited over the right center fence THAT also looses you those type games!

I agree 100% Larry high school baseball sucks now. I too haven't watched a game in 2 years. Maybe for me it's all the rule changes some for the good others I don't agree with. Only thing I know is teams now couldn't touch teams from those years
