Appreciate the info. Well I know they had several good shooters last year and I know all of those were not seniors.....so I expect them to give GC a game. I know they lost to a pretty good Sullivan East team the other day by like 10 pts....but again East is pretty solid this year from what I've seen and heard. THS plays a pretty good zone defense which can give GC fits at times. But I expect GC to be a better shooting team overall this year so playing against a zone defense may work to GCs favor. I definitely think it will be a game worth the admission though. However, I could be wrong...I really have nothing to go on other than pure speculation. After the way the 3 games went last year against them it's really hard to say. Beat THS 2 times by 8-12 pts each time then lost the 3rd time by 60.

The 3rd game last year was GC's 3rd game in 4 days and was meaningless as far as the upcoming postseason was concerned. Scotty pulled the starters early in the 2nd quarter if I remember correctly. Tennessee High shot probably 75% for the game and was hitting everything. Hampton started out hot also, but GC outscored them 69-40 the rest of the way. GC actually led by 20+ until Hampton scored some late garbage points. I've always been one to keep expectations grounded until late in a season, but this bunch may be the best I've seen since the late 80's bunch.

I was at the THS game last year when GC lost by 60. GC was definitely gassed after playing a few games that week including the big win against Union. Then on top of being worn down everything that THS chucked up went in. I think they hit somewhere around 12-15 3 pt buckets and GC couldn't throw a beach ball in the ocean that night against their zone. Scotty did pull most of the starters by 2nd qtr....I talked to him about this game a while back and he said the guys were just worn out and came out flat.

I'm pumped to see this group of guys play and will be there tonight with bells on. Did GCs defense look pretty good after that display of exceptional shooting in the 1st qtr by Hampton? I know the guys on the JV team last year played some pretty good defense. Hope those guys help by bringing some intensity coming in off the bench.

The defense looked fine. They were shooting 3's with a hand in their face and everything was going in. That's impossible to defend. I didn't even expect to come away with a win with it being our first time out after just a week of practice but we got better as the game went on.

I must agree. They almost looked like they were in mid season form for spurts of the game tonight. I thought the guys coming off the bench played with more intensity on defense than the starting 5 did. If they can sure up the defense a tad and get after some rebounds....they will be a tough group to handle.

Dean handles the ball with his non-dominant hand through traffic about as good as any freshman I've ever seen. And I'm almost certain I've never seen a freshman sink 3s from near halfcourt and make it look as effortless as shooting a free throw. Kid is impressive.

McClung has definitely improved his mid-range jumper and he has obviously increased his vertical which I didnt think was possible. He's absolutely the real deal. Ervin looks to have gotten taller and bulked up a little bit. He shot the ball really well last night and handled the ball up the court in transition like a true PG.

The Devils will be hard to beat locally. They have real potential...just need to work on rebounding and tightening up the D a little bit. When these guys start to gel....lookout! The first half of the game last night was one of the most exciting basketball games I've ever seen.

This season is gonna be real fun from what I seen tonight. Seen a few D1 coaches lurking around tonight. McClung even picked up another D-1 offer (Cal Poly) after a 25 point season opener. Scotty pulled starters with about 4 minutes to play and GC was up 71-41 at that point.

I seen Ervin just got an offer from Central Arkansas too

Got to agree...........with all the hype surrounding this team, and the pressure that comes with that, last night was a pretty good showing in front of a packed house.

The Good:

Defensive hustle. Defense will be improved this year. Speaking of defense, we really did not do much (if any) full court man-to-man last night. It was mostly pick up your man at half court. Not sure if Scotty is doing this to help keep Mac & Zack out of foul trouble, or if it will be more a season long strategy.

Potential on the bench. A lot of people forget that GC lost 8 seniors last year. Bench is pretty much entirely brand new. These kids should get some playing time early in the year and be a real asset toward the end of the year. Like RiverRat pointed out.........those kids on the bench will get after you on defense.

Our schedule. During the first three weeks of the season, GC will "get" to play Knox Christian, Wings Academy out of the Bronx, NY, and another quality opponent at Arby's. Those games will definitely show us what we need to work on, and will hopefully keep the kids "grounded".

The freshman Dean is the real deal. Once he gets some more varsity games under his belt, people will hear more about him. Possibly the best pure shooter ever at GC. Only problem.........might not be enough shots to go around with Mac & Zack on the team.

We handled THS press extremely well for it being our first game.

Mac's decision making. Last year the potential for Mac to get a little out of control was always present. Last night he seemed to make more "mature" decisions.

Needs some work:

Rebounding. Rebounding. Rebounding. We gave up WAY too many offensive rebounds. A decent rebounding night would have easily eliminated 14-16 points.

Too many bad passes and missed, short shots last night........but that should improve as the season gets longer.

Would love to see us have more kids scoring. Hopefully more kids will get involved on the offensive side during the second half of some games early in the year. There will be games where 1-2 of the "big three" will have off nights. Would be real handy to have some offensive confidence in some kids when that happens.

Can't change:

Still wish we had a 6'11' exchange student from Croatia to stick in the middle. Lack of a true big man may hurt us at some point. I can easily see teams pounding us in the middle, and getting Zach and others in foul trouble.

Expectations. Lots of pressure on this team already. Next year will be worse. Just got to take it game by game and try to improve each week.

How do kids jump so high these days? When I was in high school many moons ago, it was impressive if a local team had one kid who could dunk in warm-ups. Last night GC had 5-7 kids dunking in warm-ups. Mac drove into the lane early in the game for what I assumed would be a finger roll......and then bam! Dunk.

Collier and Ervin are the best rebounders of the starting 5 for GC. Collier can be physical at times....he just needs to be consistent with it. Hes a great athlete and can jump out of the gym. Him scoring in the paint will be huge for GC. After that....the young guns on the bench hit the boards better than the rest. Those fellas are scrappy.....and if they can manage to gain confidence and experience on offense and start putting up some points it will take alot of the load off of Mac, Zac, and Dean.

That first dunk from where I was sitting looked like a Tomahawk slam from McClung. Ball was way behind his head before he slammed it. Feel bad for the THS kid....he got posterized in the worst way.

Did I read it right that the JV Devils lost 55-22?  If so, it's a good thing that none of the big 3 are seniors.

Most of GC's "players" are underclassmen. McClung (JR), Ervin (SOPH), and the Dean kid (FRESH). I think they have three seniors on the team and only one gets substantial playing time.

yea...that's pretty much what I said when I referenced the big 3.

Most of the kids on the bench are sophomore's give or take. A few Juniors scattered in there with 2 other seniors. Kids coming off the bench giving substantial minutes are sophomores/freshmen.

GC boys have a 9th grade team and a JV team this year from what I'm understanding. I'm guessing there's so many kids playing they had to split up teams. Maybe I'm out of the loop and they've done this recently but I definitely hadnt heard anything about it til last night.

a 9th grade team is a great idea.  especially for basketball-minded schools.  martinsville had a 9th grade team for many years, i played on it way back when myself.   i guess it's been a thing of the past for close to 20 years now though.  there's certainly enough interest to warrant a team, but financial constraints have to be the hindrance.  gw danville, franklin co, ph roanoke, halifax, fleming all have a team, so there are schools within decent distance that they could play.

i wonder if GC has to travel near and far for games?  although it would probably be just as easy for them to play 1A school's JV teams (maybe even some 2As) and compete just fine.
