Take this how you want also. I don't know the real answere to the question, but when you look at the last name of all the players it looks like names that have been in Appo for the past 40 years that I have been associated with APPO. small town and you do tend to get to know everyone and families pretty darn quick.

Recruit from where? And to what? Don't recall seeing much industry to speak of in Appomattox. I'm guessing that a lot of the people there may work in Lynchburg, My guess is that they are just having a good run of athletes right now.

They remind me a lot of the really excellent Altavista teams of a couple years ago. And I think one of their coaches was a member of that Altavista staff, coincidentally enough.

I concur with JDHoss. They are hitting a sweet spot of circumstance and talent right now. I think they have one kid who transferred from Heritage, and there has been some shuffling of players in the Lynchburg area in terms of enrollment in the past. But Appomattox looks pretty organic overall.

Strong community with some really good folks. Although I hate to see my school lose, it's easy to feel good about the success of the Raiders. Hats off to them.

I believe that coaching may be one of the biggest factors along with an exceptional group of athletes. I suspect like Gretna was known for their futility before their title runs that they have usually had good athletes.

What industry is there in Richlands?

I don't know if Appomattox has transfers or not but as we've seen around here a winning program will bring kids in. You don't have to have a thriving job market to bring in atheletes to a state contender.

Again, bring them in from where? From what I saw, Appomattox is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Granted it's 25 miles from Lynchburg, but there are several nice schools in Lynchburg to choose from. Makes zero sense to truck your kid 50+ miles a day to play Group AA football.

It does if it means winning state titles

I think its more about demographics.  They probably just haven't had the coaching in the past. If Gretna or Martinsville could get the right coaching going they would be much tougher.  Appomattox is  right between Hampton and Libertys colleges some solid football minds I'm sure to draw off of.  That coach will get some looks.  .

Hasn't stopped anyone in Mercer, McDowell, and Tazewell County...

Having lived in Farmville for 3 years (20 minutes from Appomattox)... I can say that there is no shortage of athletes in that area.  I don't feel like they would need to recruit.  I think they just have the right coach.

Spent the night in Farmville when we went to see Union vs Appomattox. Very nice town.

I know Richlands had at least 5 O-Line transfers(recruits) this year. One was my cousin Andrew Dye. I know one boy came all they way from Elizabethton, Tn. I believe Booker came from Graham if I'm not mistaken. Who were the rest? My question is could Richlands actually compete without the best players from other schools? We'll say transferrs so won't make Richlands citizens mad. I would like to see what kind of talent that the boys that's raised and bred in Richlands have not kids from other schools. I work with a parent that had a kid on the team 2 yrs ago and this parent still volunteers his time to the team. I don't believe he lied to me but he said to make it legal usually one of the players befriends one of the players they want and brings him in shows them the weight room and the nice field and some reason maybe a coach may be in the facility and may say be nice to have you on the team cause we always contend for state and you'll get a lot of exposure to colleges. If the coach hisself approaches the kid it's illegal but if another kid does it's not. I dated the Johnson boy's aunt she told me all the things they were given to move from all the way from WV for them to play. There's probabaly a lot more schools that do this escpically in the communities with a lot of business owners, dr's and lawyers that have kids in the local school. I know 100% fact that one business owner I know personally was asked for money to put up money for the Johnson boys. It's not illegal until it's really looked into and caught.
