Akers Out at GC?

Robbie hasn't been promised anything, the new school will have South people all across the board IMO. The new coach there will never do anything in football, they will be 6A in football. All ot the round ball sports will be fine football will struggle!

Maybe you know more that I, but his resignation seemed very sudden. Especially, after showing interest in the GC job. Just seems like if he had been finished with coaching, he would never have applied at GC. Perhaps the AD job was to keep him from moving on.

As it stands right now, assuming they get all the current kids, South/North would have enrollment of 1379. That's very similar to the other area 5A schools and several hundred less than the Region 1 6A schools. Is it a definite they will be 6A?

No Graham Clark. I want more than just 10-1 every year. Plus his jokes are not funny to me, you should never make the kids the butt of your jokes.  Norris isn’t going anywhere, he got his promotion to keep from losing him to GC last time. I say retirement will be coming up if he can’t land the AD job and the new school.

And expect GC’s schedule to look the same. I don’t think GC could get things moved around from what I hear. No one wants to play GC and they’ve had 3 losing seasons in a row. I figured everyone would be lined up at the doorstep. Since it’s not going to change, we are going to have to change. Time to get mentally and physically stronger. To be the best you gotta beat the best.

1509 in Tennessee is 6A, the school should have around 1700 students. They are just talking about 60% of Central's students and the rest will rezone to Sullivan East.

Chris Akers wasn’t good enough for you, 10-1 isn’t good enough for you...

Gotcha. I thought it was only North/South. Didn't realize so many of Central's students would be going too.

I’d take 10-1 after the last 3 years we’ve had don’t get me wrong. But we want more. But I understand it’s baby steps.  I was making the statement that Graham could fly through the regular season but crumbled in the playoffs (at DB, playing the Volunteers and Sully Centrals) and the expectations are to win in the playoffs at GC, not just get there. DBs old regular season schedule was always pretty favorable and made him look better than he was.  Graham did less with more than anyone in the region (as Norris did more with less at North). No reason that DB shouldn’t be full of championships in football.

Is akers still teaching at gc?  I wonder if he is staying and not coaching.  It would be hard for him to get another hc job after his last two years.

Yes. Was just forced to resign from coaching. He is still a teacher. But I bet money he is job hunting. Especially in the Bristol City School area.

Northwood is open. I think he will either have to take a coordinator job or a HC job at a less prestigious school.

What less prestigious school would want somebody that could not win at gc?   If you can’t win there, where could you win.  Retreat was happy he left.

Frye couldn’t have won 5+ with the talent GC has had the last 3 seasons. It’s been down in talent. It just hasn’t been there.

It’s Fry, not Frye.

We can all speculate on how many games other coaches would’ve won in the Akers era...and it’s just that...speculation. What I can guarantee is that the past three teams would have played with a greater demonstration of football fundamentals — principally blocking and tackling.

This is what the people in GC are upset about and something you can’t understand from the box scores or Facebook.

I disagree.  Talent is there.  They did not want to play.   And even at that the ones that did play should have and could have been 5-5 teams.  Battle, lee, wise.   Should never lose those.   Other games besides Richlands.  Union and rv most years should at least be competitive.   Should be beating south also.

Let me get this straight, you went to practice and set up on the hill at THE EASTMAN (joke in itself) Credit Union and know for a fact that they didn't work on the fundamentals?  Hmmmm.  Then I guess you should apply for the job (shut up and apply) l get so sick of these posts about how you are the only ones that know football. Since we are talking about coaching,  neither Coach Fry or Coach Colobro were from Gate City.    It is the few of your keyboard warriors that make everyone else sick and tired of hearing it.  You are also the problems when it comes to your kids (in the community) getting coached because all you do is bash people.  Get over it.

How is this determined? Is this in an unofficial handbook of high school football? Where can I get a copy?

The talent is there but it's on the basketball court. Take McClung and Ervin and put them on the football field with what is already out there and that team is easily 5-5. Gate City will need a recruiter who can sell kids on coming out for football and not focusing on one sport.

The overall football talent isn't there like it was, the age of specialization in sports is what is all about now. A lefty specialist out of the bullpen who makes 80 appearance and throws 57 innings, a wildcat quarterback on third down, a defensive stopper in basketball. As a GC alum and lifelong football fan (never played because I couldn't get medically cleared) I hope there are better days ahead for the football team, but after a record breaking run in the 70's it was the late 90's before another state title, I hope the fanbase is patient but I know they won't be. We live in a society of instant gratification, a microwave generation if you will,,when what is needed is a crock pot (slow and steady) but that doesn't fly now . I wonder how many GC fans would have settled for 9-1 seasons these last 2 years a losing in the first round of the playoffs rather than the worst two season combined in school history but as stated above that wouldn't be good enough either.

As long as there is some type of improvement being made, the majority of the fans will support whoever the coach is.  I would much rather be 9-1 and losing in the playoffs then never being in contention or a threat to make them.  With that said, I do agree that Akers should be left alone, for he has stepped aside and is no longer the coach at GC.

Whoever the new coach is needs to focus on the LL program and get that back to running the way it should be and get away from the travel team.  That and a good offseason program and I truly believe GC will be a much more competitive team in 2-3 years.

Ha, not a chance. This post has more views than any other top discussion right now. Ya know in elementary school when boys pick on who they have a crush on? It's like all these keyboard pushers from GC have secret hard ons for the guy. Making him a household name! The kicker is everyone outside of the "ever so prestigious Gate City" realizes that everyone in Gate City has lost their minds. Yall should come talk to some normal football fans at.. literally any school other than GC.. it's actually funny. Now I do disagree with leaving Akers alone, its absolutely hysterical how much you all enjoy talking about him and I find it amusing. I also secretly hope it scares away any competent coach from being sucked into your rabbit hole next. Speaking of incompetent people, maybe some of the GC keyboard warriors should apply..

The sheer arrogance of this post ventures on the absurd.  You saying that GC should never lose to one of those teams?  Really?  So those teams aren't allowed to get better just because they have to lose to GC year in and year out.

Yes I agree with this.  I will need to see a copy of the handbook where it states that.

Agree with all of this. The bold I doubly agree with. The man did what he could.   The continued bashing of this man has become tiresome and sad. What’s done is done. He did not purposely drive GC to the basement of the M7.

All GC fans should look to the future and hope that the best candidate comes in and turns things around. SWVA football is better when GC is good.

No matter how loud it’s yelled, nobody buys the bs that coach Akers is totally to blame.

Before anyone asks, yes I do know Chris. We’re not close friends or anything, but I do believe he did what he thought was best.

Did his tenure fail? From a win/loss standpoint, yes.

Does he wish it could have been better? Of course! Who wouldn’t?

We've all had something happen in our lives that we wish we could have done something better to change it. Whether it be with our job, our marriage, our parenting, or a million other things.

Good luck to the GC program. I hope you guys find the right guy to turn things around. Not so much for the fans, but for the current and future GC student athletes.

Also, good luck to coach Akers. I hope he has success wherever his next path in life takes him.

It sounds like you have described yourself in a lot of what you just posted trying to poke at an entire fan base.  You literally just created an account so you could weigh in on something that has to do with GC football.  I sense a lot of hostility towards GC as a whole in your comment.  Is it fair to say, based on your own opinion, you wished you could have played at GC but since you didn't you've never recovered from the missed opportunity?  It's a strong opinion from a keyboard pusher right?
