Falcon Mania 235 Report Share Posted February 1, 2019 A really nice article today by Nate Hubbard in the Bristol Hearld Courier about Abingdon's Head Coach Garrett Amburgey being the prep coach of the year. https://www.heraldcourier.com/sports/prep-football-coach-of-the-year-garrett-amburgey-abingdon/article_c7710f36-25a8-11e9-bc6b-3fed4996099f.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=user-share swvafbrespect, falconfan1 and rvtne216
swva_havok_fan 1,261 Report Share Posted February 1, 2019 Well deserved as well. They got it right this year. Last year, it should have been Mullins of Ridgeview but it was given to Robinson instead.

Seems like Graham's staff should have won the award considering they are wearing rings. Gridiron60, jarhead24219 and swvafbrespect

To me, the coach of the year award should go to the coach who does things that aren't expected... Last year, Mullins took a last place predicted team in the M7 and finished 2nd with it. This year, the article linked above explains itself. Ryan4VT
Liam McPoyle 1,863 Report Share Posted February 2, 2019 Congratulations to Coach Amburgey. I appreciate the justification for his selection and don't envy BHC for having to select only one winner. My personal vote would be 1. Tony Palmer 2. Garrett Amburgey 3. Mark Palmer Gridiron60
Gridiron60 2,554 Report Share Posted February 2, 2019 I feel like Tony Palmer & staff should have got it but Amburgey is also deserving. Congratulations to him. Deleted Account

I agree that Amburgey did a good job considering the timing of when he got hired. My argument against him winning the award would be he finished first in a 2A district with a 3A school and then got blown out in a 2nd round regional matchup. Winning the Mountain District is great but I don't think many people had picked Graham to win a state title before the season began which is more impressive. 50kw and Gridiron60
Liam McPoyle 1,863 Report Share Posted February 3, 2019 There is a natural geographic bias that affects all regional papers. I'm not saying that's the case here, but Graham is on the periphery of the BHC coverage area and nowhere near to its circulation area. We fans can be purists, but the media doesn't always have that luxury. After all, newspapers are in the business of selling newspapers. 1inStripes, Ryan4VT and Deleted Account
