1938 Tazewell Graham Football game

Recommended Posts

In 1938 Tazewell and Graham were scheduled to play football at Tazewell. At the coin toss Graham protested three Tazewell players as ineligible. Tazewell refused to remove the three from the lineup so Graham left without playing the game. Tazewell was originally awarded a forfeit by the referee which was correct procedure. Graham appealed to the VHSL the eligibility of the three Tazewell players and eventually two of the three were declared ineligible and no decision was ever made on the third as far as I can tell. Tazewell and Graham both claim a forfeit but upon finding the VHSL ruling in the Bluefield paper the game was declared a no contest. Therefore I have updated the Tazewell and Graham records to show this. That means this year's game is not the 100th encounter between the two but only the 99th.

Boneheaded move by the Graham coach. The protest at the coin toss was fine, but you at least play one or two plays of the game in which you know the ineligible players are on the field for Tazewell.  If that happens, Graham would have got the decision and win, but by not playing one play, Tazewell should have that victory in the record books because ineligible players are only ineligible once they have played a snap and if the game hasn't kicked off, it's a forfeit.
