I saw that Region D has several competing today at state swim meet. Hopefully, we’ll see some that place.

Cross Country my opinion

Cross country to me is an interesting sport that is often overlooked. This year I actually went to two Cross country meets in Arizona I wanted to watch something different besides watching football basketball or baseball and I found it is a fun sport to watch. I actually volunteered for the first meet and had the task of handing out pieces of paper with numbers on them to the runners when they crossed the finish line. I’m glad there was only three teams instead of ten. The second meet which was a month later I just watched they didn’t need any volunteers.

One thing that stands out is that it probably is the easiest sport to get a letter in. (It’s not at all easy to run 3 to 5 miles in the woods). The reason I say it’s the easiest sport to get a letter in is that a lot of schools don’t even have 5 runners on their team. It’s not just the small schools the large schools have the same problem with getting people to run on their team.

Most schools the number one sport is usually football basketball or baseball and the other sports are usually secondary.

Grundy on the other hand they mostly concentrate on wrestling more than any other sport. Don’t get me wrong they probably take football serious.

Council does not have a football team so I wonder how serious they take sports like cross country.

If you ever get a chance this year or next go check out a cross country meet I think you will be surprised and enjoy being there in the outdoors. Maybe they will let you volunteer and help.

URGENT: HELP ELLA GET BACK ON THE TRACK!

We need the help of our local leaders to correct an injustice happening right here in Southwest Virginia.

Ella, a hardworking student-athlete from Council High School, is being punished by VHSL for circumstances completely outside of her control.
Because her school didn’t have enough players for a basketball team, she practiced with another local school while staying fully enrolled at Council. Now, VHSL says she’s ineligible to compete in track — the sport she’s trained for, poured her heart into, and even attracted college interest for.

This is not right. A young woman who has worked tirelessly to represent our region with pride should NOT be punished for doing nothing wrong.

We are asking for immediate action from our elected officials:

Ridgeview Wolfpack wins VHSL 2A Volleyball title

Far SWVA wins its first volleyball title since 2018 (Patrick Henry) as the Wolfpack defeat top seeded Fort Defiance in straight sets 25-21, 25-22, 25-17. It is the second state championship for the Wolfpack and the first since 2016 (girls basketball).

Although I don't think they are considered SWVA, 1A Auburn won their sixth consecutive VHSL 1A volleyball championship.

Hidden Valley Goes Back-to-Back in Class 3 Volleyball

Hidden Valley defeated Grafton in 3 - 0 to claim the second in a row Class 3 State Championship. My granddaughter plays for Hidden Valley and it was a real treat for me to watch her out on the court playing for a state championship. It was also a new experience for me being in the stands as a fan. For many years I was on the floor coaching at the state wrestling tournament. it is a different perspective from up top. Congratulations to the Titans for bringing home the Gold!

2A VHSL Volleyball tournament

Although volleyball doesn't get much attention in the area, it should. There have been several teams over the past several years that have advanced deep into the VHSL 2A tournament (Gate City, Central and Ridgeview). This year Ridgeview sits as the #2 team in the state and Central has been in the Top 10 most of the year.

The tournament started tonight with the Top 4 M7 teams seeded against the Top 4 SWD Teams.

#1 Ridgeview vs #4 Richlands

#2 Virginia High vs #3 John Battle

#2 Wise Central vs #3 Lebanon

#1 Marion vs #4 Gate City

The 2023 season begins tomorrow with the Woodford Classic at Wytheville Golf Club. A lot of area teams will be involved. Many teams will be without star players who qualified for the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Amateur at Birdwood in Charlottesville. The VSGA Junior Amateur is a 54-hole stroke play event played August 1-3 featuring the best 84 players from across the Commonwealth.
