Earlier this evening Coach Harless had a video posted on the Union Sports Network Facebook site. The video showed a bit of a packet/book that his players are to use and learn this year. Obviously, as a Union fan, I was extremely proud to see the video, but honestly, I would have been very proud if the video came from anywhere else. Harless said in an interview a couple months ago that if you weren't a great man then you wouldn't fit in his system. In this packet, he outlined things much greater than being a great football player. Being a great human being always comes first. I told my eldest son that when he played. We are seeing a culture change at Union. It is very obvious, and it's very respect and disciplined based. I fully expect the absurd number of penalties to be a thing of the past. If you get a chance, head over and watch it. I love that it draws inspiration from such a class act in Tony Dungy. I love that it speaks about what it means to be an American, and I love the page that says in bold letters "You are who you associate with". I'd love to see more of this from more coaches. I was from the get thrilled when we landed him because of his coaching abilities, but we are getting a big-time bonus with what he's bringing on a personal level here.

August 21 in the jamboree at Burton where the Bears will play Tug Valley, West Virginia at 7 and end with Burton at 8pm

Well folks as you all may have noticed, we haven’t been picking many losers the last few years. Uncle Percy has slowed down a lot due some of those thingamegig ailments. Well, he has decided to retire. Thanks to Mr. Researcher’s Four Seasons Site, Uncle Percy has been working on how many different football teams he has seen play over the years. As of now it is at 120. This includes Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee in person and not that TV thing a lot of you watch. If winter and spring sports were included, the number would be much higher and include teams from several more states.

However, the Pickin’ will continue with Cousins Claude and Delbert. Uncle Percy and I will be traveling to catch some teams he hasn’t seen. We’ll be in Hokiebird’s country the first weekend to mark off Floyd County.

Remember, Common Sense is considered an oxymoron by the VHSL, BUT, you can decide who is the actual oxymoron is.

Southern Gap Predictions

I’ve been thinking where Southern Gap may consistently seed in 2D over the next decade. I’m excited to see them in person, and how they might shake up the southwest. Just knowing the history of the schools consolidating, I know they won’t be terrible, just not one of the bests either. I personally would imagine seeing them average somewhere in 4-5 every year in 2D, with obvious ups and downs year to year.

.....is the QB coach at TCU this season. That's a step down in title from being the OC at Tulsa, but probably decent pay bump and a more stable program. Tulsa is a tough gig to have sustained success at, especially in today's NIL/play for pay world.

We did this last year, and it was good stuff, so I will start the ball rolling:

UNION BEARS

Any program that lost as many players as the Bears did to graduation would be in "Taking our lumps" mode, but thanks to a great feeder program and a new but proven head coach in Jamie Harless who has energized the players, the Bears will have a say in the mix of things come playoff time. Abe Hall is bigger, faster and stronger this season (really impressed me with his wheels on the diamond), and he has a cannon for an arm. "Fred" Dillman is exactly the same, bullish back that Chandler was. The defensive line will be a strength with the majority of starters back. Matty Polier should have a monster year. Talented players like Abe Potter and Milbro will certainly be weapons. The key to the Bears will be how quickly the offensive line gels and develops. I think Union will be a very dangerous team late in the season. This squad will be where Graham was last year. I have them with a loss to Graham and toss up vs Ridgeview, and the rest of their games winnable. I honestly do believe it will be Graham-Strasburg for all the marbles this year. Excited to be talking football again!

I will be forever grateful to him for giving my eldest son a fulfillment of his dream. He has left a huge, lasting legacy by all of the young men in high school and college that he molded. My son has spoken so many times about how much he learned about not just football but life from Coach Newsome. #STINGERSUP. You will be profoundly missed Coach!
