Union vs. Richlands rematch
UniON_FoOtBaLL and 3 others reacted to EH31 for a topic
Union coach Travis Turner had plenty of reasons to be happy with the performance of his experienced squad. The Bears rushed for 290 yards behind seniors Braxton Zirkle (18 carries, 91 yards) and Dakota Owens (12 carries, 1104 yards) and junior Avery Jenkins, who added 30 yards rushing. Richlands managed just 26 total yards in the first half and never found a comfort zone. For the game, the Blues accumulated just 36 yards rushing and 61 yards passing with three interceptions. “Union is very athletic, smart and well-coached, and they just whipped us,” Richlands coach Greg Mance said. “We couldn’t get first downs or sustain anything to give our defense a breather in the first half.” 1. You can't blame the punter for that touchdown. The coaching staff put the offense out there to go for it on 4th Down and then changed their mind and tried to run the punt team on. Punter was rushed to get the snapped off to avoid a delay of game. 2. If you take that punt return touchdown away then the score is still 10-0 in favor of union, and if you still give Richlands the touchdown they scored it would end up 10-7 - Union still wins. 3. Union had 290 rushing yards & 30 passing yards. Richlands had 36 rushing yards and 61 passing yards. 320 > 97, right? It clearly seems that one offense was better than the other when one offense has more than 3x the yards. James mitchell barely touched the ball on offense the first game. Less than 60 yards if I read right. Now he's touching the ball almost every play. You don't think that makes Union's offense better? They only had 30 yards passing the first game so losing him as a receiver doesn't seem like it would hurt that much. You can spin it whatever way you want but the tale of the first matchup, as well as the entire season is that Union runs the ball at will and their defense doesn't allow yards or points & Richlands offense is incapable of putting enough points on the board to win when their defense allows more than two touchdowns. I don't see how anything has changed?4 points -

Mitchell Is on or above the same level as anyone in the state athletically in classifications D1-D4. Guess we'll have to disagree on that one. I understand Richlands defense has been good this year but they gave up 300 rushing yards to Union without the 6th ranked player in the state being in the backfield. To me, Union is better off in this matchup than they were in the first with Mitchell taking snaps.2 points

I know how you feel Razor............I think I have picked against our Blues maybe 2 or 3 times in the last 15 or 20 years. I just don't like to do it even if i feel pretty sure they will lose, like I did last year against Appo in the state game. I wanted nothing more for the Blues to win that game, but I thought Appo was just too strong. Again today as bad as I hate it, I think the Bears win 21 to 10. The Blues D is tough but we have just struggled so much on offense this year and with the game at Union, I just don't see us scoring enough against that strong D to pull this one out.............but I feel sick to my stomach to not pick my beloved blues. I hope I am so wrong and I have to appologize to our fans on here and our players for this pick. I am Blue through and through and love our kids and coaches, but the offense just worries me, but I will be pulling and praying hard for them. Good luck to both teams and safe travel to all !!2 points

Well Ttown - Graham is losing 9 seniors just like last year. Yes Cooke is a hell of an athlete. His speed you only see every qtr century or so. However if you’ve watched any games you would see Lester is capable of as many big plays not as fast - yet only a true sophomore. Vineyard hell of a linebacker one of the best in the area - however the MLB Kastner - another true sophomore is one to watch as well my guess would be a close 2nd in tackles to Vineyard. Mason another outstanding player at linebacker and running the ball Reed comes back in. Allen only a junior and outstanding. Curto excellent kicker backup Dales - another true sophomore who is just as capable. The rest of the seniors play both sides of the line. Graham has some size coming up from 8th graders even. You are short changing Graham’s current young talent and upcoming talent. Not to mention look at what Palmer has done in 3 years - young men want to play for him. Go ahead take your 1-9 record facts are facts might want to check them again.2 points

This is going to be a tough game. I know it is. I do believe that Union's offense is rolling right now, and the defense has been extremely consistent in every game. No matter the players, the formations, the amount of yards gained, the only statistic that matters is points on the board. And I think the Bears are more capable of scoring than Richlands. Union 21 Richlands 7 Hope all the Blues fans have a safe trip to and from BSG, and I pray all these young men are as healthy and injury free at the end of the game as they are now. Are you going to send me to the principal's office, if I don't shut up? lol. It's called being a realist, coach. Being a negative nancy is one thing, but some of us like to be realists and don't care to speak honestly and openly. I know you are worried someone might see you post something they don't like and that's cool, got to keep that fan status up. Some of us don't have that worry, we have no affiliation outside of where we went and if you have kids there, not all of us trying to for the biggest high school fan award. I wish both teams the best, I like to see them do well, but we can call it like we see it. There's nothing negative being posted. I know it's hard to see past those tinted glasses but learn to accept some constructive criticism once in a while. You guys open the topics up on here, the people will talk and it won't all be positive. If you don't like it, that's where those censored facebook school support groups come into play. With all that said, you do have a team that gives the county a team in the playoffs. Maybe they'll represent well and give PH all they want, or maybe not, we'll see soon enough.1 point -

Union would not be #1 if they did not prove themselves on the field. My hat off to them for that, they deserve the position, and they won the honor of playing #8 which happens to be Richlands, which by no means is your average #8. This makes for a great 1st round game and make no mistake about it, both teams will bring the wood in this game. It will be well worth the price of a ticket. Put on your coat and wool hat, bring the hot coffee, because the fur is getting ready to fly.1 point -

16-7. Which is a 2 score win (cough cough @Ryan4VT ?) but I wasn't discounting Richlands defense I was discounting their offense. I expect it to be a low scoring game..I highly doubt it'll be a high scoring game because union doesn't give up 2 touchdowns a game and Richlands offense doesn't score more than 2 a game. That was my point.1 point -

Someone remind me of the score when these two met in the second game of the season. Not saying Union will be held to 14, but don't discount Richlands defense, it's better than it was early in the season. This may be a low scoring game, and it could be a high scoring game, won't know until the final buzzer sounds.1 point -

Curious as to what bad attitudes? Graham has come together more as a team this year. They really mesh well finally. They’ve been through some tough times with competitiveness within the team. Finally it’s not a one or two man show. These kids care about winning and playing as a team.1 point -

I'm sure both teams have 7 or 8 game films on each other. You're game planning on tendencies. If you are putting something new in this week only and it doesn't work;you are pretty much screwed for the game. Because you've put this "grand scheme" in and it didn't work. Now what? Wouldn't be real smart to do that.1 point -

Turner will play Friday at every game if it’s his choice, as for Richlands being a better team , I believe they are but Union has found their O again, so many weapons that you cannot key on one man, Travis doesn’t have to hit a home run every play, he will settle for 4 yards and a cloud of dust. Richlands will not kick to Mitchell and they will give up field position because of it1 point
