  1. Big win by GC over Fern Creek today! Mac dropped 44 and is now 38 points shy of the 2003 Arby's scoring record. We'll face the Lakota East - Mater Academy winner in the 6th place game tomorrow. I think we benefited from poor Fern Creek shooting in the first half, but this is an impressive win.

I guess the Crockett team from a couple of years ago was pretty decent, and Science Hill caught a bad break that may have cost them 1 state title when Shannon Hale and another kid transferred to Christ School a few years ago, but other than that, it's been really lean.

Sorry, didn't mean to be confusing with all those teams. I included those teams only because of the district they are playing in...I just include the entire district. I may at some point drop listing by districts, just way too many teams to keep up with. PM and several others aren't in the site "coverage" area. All those teams (with the exception of Radford) have their logos on the map posted at the top of the forums...

    Gate City #1 Radford #2 3-10 doesn't really matter

  5. East #8 was transported from the sideline back to the field house in the back of a JD Gator vehicle with about a minute left in the game. I was sitting in the stands right above where he was laying prone on the sideline for a few minutes. He had to be lifted into the back of the vehicle and from his face it appeared he was in some serious pain, enough to prompt prayer from this old man! Just posting the roster on here or making a Facebook page with it as one of the posts would be fine. Nothing fancy required. Congrats to those who pull this game together. You do a great job and I look forward to it every year.

  6. Couldn't agree with UVAO and Larry more. Gate City will likely not face another Virginia based 2A program with athletes comparable to McClung and Ervin and most certainly not anyone the caliber of North Meck. North Meck is the #1 ranked team in the Charoltte Observer Top 10 in North Carolina. They are young and extremely talented. My brother and I were talking about the Ford kid being similar in build, athleticism, ability, style and talent to another North Meck product, VCU standout Jamie Skeen. Being only a freshman, he may end up better than Skeen. Radford is a quality program year in and year out. But they haven't had talent such as McClung and Ervin since the Nichols brothers were in high school. I believe Gate City would make Radford suffer if they were to pressure them in the open court if and when they meet.

  7. That has the potential to be an Achilles’ Heel for this Gate City team. I think Gate City has the best player in all of 2A in McClung, and Ervin might have a compelling case to be ranked #2 right behind McClung. After that, though, the drop-off is stark, and Gate City looks like most other teams. My concern for Gate City is a lockdown, grinding defensive team coming out of the East, and holding Gate City in the 50s. Defensively, Gate City is a strong, but not elite, unit. If a team has the defensive horses to limit McClung and Ervin, and can shoot respectably, it could be a nightmare for the Devils. Easier said than done though. Virginia HS boys’ basketball is notoriously bad, and Gate City has possibly the best SWVA team I’ve ever seen. I don’t think any team at this level can out-athlete them like North Mecklenburg did.

I get it. He is huge and looks like he is 25 years old but he was in middle school with my nephew until this school year. The way the boundaries fall, Ford ended up at North Meck and my nephew ended up at Hough. Edit to add....My brother played at Bluefield College from 1998-2002. He was offered several coaching positions following college, one under Tommy Brown at Lee University in Cleveland TN. He turned them down to chase a lifelong dream of being a "big city police officer" to which he has been with CMPD since 2002. Point is, he knows more about basketball than I ever have or will. He has been telling me about this kid for the past 5 or 6 years. I just didn't realize he was already playing varsity until I saw the Huntington Prep box score.
