I never said anything about Jeremy or anyone else. LHL has criticized everyone he just commented on. Period.

I think I've listened to Ron Brown call most of these classic games and concur with those listed. 200 wins is impressive for any coach, but I think Mance's accomplishment is especially remarkable for several reasons: 1. It didn't that long. 23 seasons is a fairly short career to reach this milestone. 2. He got a late start. He didn't become HC until his mid-30s and he's still only in his 50s. 3. He inherited a program in turmoil. 'Nuff said. 4. He had a slow start. His record after 3 seasons was a pedestrian 14-18, which meant he averaged more than 9.7 wins over the next 19 seasons. 5. Not a lot cupcakes. The SWD wasn't always tough, but the OOD always was.

I remember 2004 quite a bit differently. After Bradshaw graduated, Graham was expected to be very much down and gearing toward 2005. Graham ended up having no offense that season (See: Tazewell - 7, Graham - 5). Carlock getting that 2004 team to the playoffs is possibly the most underrated coaching performance of his entire career. That was a mediocre team on its best day, and to play Richlands to a 25-9 loss, when most knew Richlands was going to be the team coming out of R4D4, was pretty impressive. The real passing of the torch was that 2005 season. Carlock had passed weeks before coaching what he thought was going to be one of his best teams. Richlands has just dropped to R4D3. Graham started 4-0, then went to Richlands and got blanked 30-0. Graham went back to Richlands for the R4D3 playoffs at 9-2, and lost a 19-13 game. That’s where the programs diverged.

From a GMen perspective, 2004 over Graham was big. Richlands opened the season with a loss to Gate City, and beat Tazewell and Abingdon, but it felt like it was going to be same same for Richlands. They would be competitive, pretty good, 7-3ish, but lose some of the big ones like GC and Graham. Richlands beat Graham handily that year and things became obvious that it wasn't just one win. You could sense that Richlands had arrived as a football program and they had. They lost in the semi's to Salem that year. It was the turning point for Graham and Richlands. Graham had taken over the district since the late 80s, and Richlands had the great run in 92-93 and Grundy did also, but Graham was best football program in that stretch. I think 2004 was the last time Coach Carlock coached against Richlands, and of course, after the 2004 season, Graham would go on to have it's worst 10-12 years of football arguably in it's history. Before 2004, Graham had had their way with Richlands for most years dating back to the early 80s. So for me, that 2004 win for the Blues really turned the tables and Richlands was the team to beat not just in Tazewell County, but the entire region.

    Gc vs hurley

Nothing but love for the Devil's from my crib in Bluefield. I miss the days of riding along in the old Ford Bronco down to GC to see the legendary Glenn Carlock vs Harry Fry. Larry, the poster in this thread made the comments due to what you represent, or he identifies you with what he hates and that is Gate City. Gate City has been shi* kicking Abingdon for decades and that bothers him. He's getting his licks while he can since GC is down for the first time in history. Your wasting your time with rationale and reason. You can't argue with someone who hates you for who you are. It doesn't matter what solid or good point you make. You aren't going to make them see, so don't try brother. Good luck to GC and a good friend of mine, Jeremy Houseright.

I played for Colobro yes, and Houseright. And as Hokie1Pokie stated, I never said that Coach Jones and or Coach D couldn’t coach. Coach Jones was one of my favorite coaches when I played (though I loved them all). Barry Jones is probably the most decorated coaches in the region. He has been apart of multiple state championship team. As for Coach D, he cares for the young men and has done a good job with them. I really like him as a person as well, he will excel under Houseright with more freedom that didn’t have under Akers. He came from a good program (Mance/Richlands) that establishes the same of what GC used to do and is wanting to get back to. I even wish we were able to hang on to Selfe, his fire would’ve been fun to have with Jeremy in charge. So, I was just stating that we had a lot of blue blood back into the program and that is a good thing. We we have some guys who understand the tradition and are trying to reestablish those rich roots before they are gone forever. No, Colobro (spelled out unlike you/though you question my keyboard skills) and Fry (spelled correctly unlike you/and you mock my keyboard skills) were not from GC. I’m not saying you have to be from GC to be a good coach. I’m pretty sure I’ve read my previous post a few times now and do not see how you thought that. But I believe having those guys back (Houseright, Darren Reed, Austin Reed, Matt Reed, Hunter Jones, Hackney) can only help us get back to understanding the history of what GC football means. I was not All-State in football or baseball. I guess that means I wasn’t worth a damn. But I do have a few accolades in both sports, with the team honors meaning more than any individual ones I ever received. But anyone who truly knows me, knows that I gave my all for the name across the chest of my jersey. You claim to know an awful lot about me, why hide behind your screen name? Come say hello sometime. I highly doubt I’ll answer to idiot though. Just be sure to call me by name ole bud.

Stealing this from Brady. Mance is 1 win away from win 200 at Richlands. What are your top 5 biggest victories for Richlands under Mance? Nice idea, @rvtne216

  11. The districts set the amount for the gate. Probably need to call THS or VHS to find out. I would think its still $6.00. Also starting soon, THS will be selling tickets online as an option. Cant remember the name of the site, but same site that the Graham vs Gate City at TMS basketball tickets were purchased on a year and a half ago. You would have to show receipt onmobile device at gate, once receipt is scanned it cant be used again, to prevent people from trying to cheat the system. Pretty cool deal.

  14. Curious Bearcat Dad what you think of the current defensive staff? I know Price has jumped around in various positions at different schools. Do you think he has what it takes to be successful there?

  18. Back to the point, getting hungry for success, doing the right things to become competitive, achieving, then post season, one thing at a time, maybe not all in one season, but all in due time. Glad to see it from a proud program! Good luck gc

  20. I was not at the game, but it’s my understanding that VHS had -17 yards of total offense and 3 turnovers in the first half. No offense to Union, because they will be in the mix this year in 2D, but the 2017 Bears put 40 points up in the first half against this year’s Bearcat team. The 2018 Bears would have put up 30 in the first half. I’ve been told by more than one Union fan, whose assessments of high school football I trust, that the 2019 Bears are a little different than we’ve grown accustomed to over the last few years. Not to say they they are bad by any stretch of the imagination. Quite the opposite on defense. I hear the defense will be quite good. I’ve also been told that the offense has quite a few kinks to work out. I’ve had a relationship with VHS sports for over 30 years as a fan, a player, and as a dad of two athletes. I hope every year that the football program becomes relevant in the region like the baseball program has been for over 4 decades. Even though VHS has been competitive in 3 of the last 4 years, this is going to be one of those really tough years, record-wise. The kids will fight hard every game, but sometimes a team just has a lot of cards stacked against it. This is one of those teams. Nobody hopes I’m wrong more than I do, but I guess time will tell.

This x1000, Heard too many coaches on multiple teams say, we will stop x with y in season. Example was Hurley running so well in the A gap, Eastside did that last year and was solved at half which lead to a tight contest.

You played for Nick C. Let me refresh my memory, Nick is not from GC. I guess that made him a terrible coach. Coach Frye? Not from GC either. You make it sound like Coach Jones and Coach Daugherty are not capable because they aren't from GC. I guess you were an all state player too? I can answer that....NO. I guess you were an all state baseball player too.... NO You aren't even all district when it comes to your keyboard skills. I guess that they should train you a little better at "the" Eastman.

  28. The Coal Bowl between Lebanon and Honaker is always fun and generally competitive. It's at Lebanon this season, I'm expecting a close game. I think a lot of people are underestimating the Pioneers so far. They will be much better this season. I'm not saying they will be a top tier playoff team, but they might sneak in. For teams like Honaker, Eastside, Central, VHS, Marion, Grundy and Tazwell, I wouldn't overlook them on your schedule or you might get a rude surprise.
