It was mentioned on the news about dropping nukes on hurricanes to disperse them, scientists say it's impossible, but now we know for a fact, a big blue cannon ball, can disperse a tornado. Lol.

I find it interesting that so many assume richlands is bad instead of seeing the possibility that gate city may be a lot better than anyone expected this year.

Yep. He got a win and it was well deserved. Mance is still one win away. This thread wasn’t meant as a guarantee that Mance would win last night. It was a thread about Richlands. Had nothing to do with GC. Congrats on your win. Good luck the rest of the way.

I sure hope I can get Graham a win over Tazewell next week.

3 thoughts for me tonight: 1. This Union defense while very young is going to be special-possibly the best we've seen by the time they gel 2. Brody Gibson looked much more comfortable tonight. All the Bears fans with doom and gloom forgetting that he's learning the position at the varsity level. He threw pretty well overall tonight and should have had a long TD pass but it was dropped (very well thrown ball). 3. Absolutely tickled to death for the kids from Gate City. They've took their lumps over the last few years. The conference needs teams like GC and Central to be good. It will only make the rest better

Gate City is much better and it's directly related to their offensive line. Their OL is going to create problems for opponents. From tackle to tackle on the OL, they are legit, but.....if you run, run, run and play defense and don't turnover, you shorten the game and that's typical GC.

Tie game...2 seconds left...Richlands attempts a chip shot FG for the win. The snap is bad, the holder scoops it up and is headed towards the end zone when a defender gets a hand on his ankle.The holder tries to stretch out to break the plane of the goal line, but fumbles. A Union defender scoops it up and heads the other way. A Richlands player catches up with him at midfield and as he is being tackled, he laterals it blindly back over his head and another Union player scoops it up and score. In other words, a typical Union - Richlands game.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, I said that Richlands may start the season 0-4 or 1-3 and was almost laughed off of the messageboard and shipped to the mental institution, so i can sympathize. I look for a good game. They were mostly sophomores last year, last year is over and done with. Let them play the game. Both teams look solid to me.

I believe that Tazewell is the only team left on their schedule who has the athleticism to compete with Graham. Tazewell drove up and down the field on Graham last season but couldnt punch it in the endzone. If Graham doesnt clean up the sloppy play, penalties and turnovers, they will find themselves in trouble.

It’s realistic to say Graham by 17+.

No one is carried away. It’s just people think we get carried away because we are proud of our home team and have hope and confidence just like they would for their team. Tazewell has came a long way!

This is one of those times that I wish I had to eat a big plate full of crow. Unfortunately, for VHS fans, I hit the nail on the head. People will learn just how good VHS could have been over the last two seasons, if not for an inept HC. He doesn’t have the talent on the roster to hide behind anymore. 0-10 is not certain this year, but definitely a possibility. Good luck to the Dawgs this year. Those kids have been taken behind the woodshed a lot over the last two seasons. Now it’s their turn kick ass. I stand behind my original prediction of 7-3 at worst for them this year, with a home playoff game in the first round.

I believe the rule is, you can’t turn 19 before August 1st. Plenty of kids turning 19 shortly thereafter though!

I take exception with point #2. If you are having success against a team by calling the same plays over and over, there is no need for "creativity". No need to pull out all the stops when you are up by 40.

As you should be. Honestly don't know if Richlands has been overhyped or Gate City underhyped. Either way, this was a solid win for the Blue Devils.

Not a gate city can but I'm happy for them too. It hasn't felt right last few years with them down. But I will be less happy if they beat Union though.

After seeing the Richlands/GC score I suspect a lot of random duffle bags showing up on porches this week with a note asking if their son ever thought about playing for Richlands.

Nothing wrong with team pride and believing your team can win. If you don't think you can beat an opponent then you might as well not leave the locker room. I personally think Union can win every game they play. I realize they won't, but it doesn't stop me from cheering them on like it will be 40-0.

Regardless of the reason Richlands lost to GC, that, by no means, indicates a loss to Union. These teams know each other and always play their best. It will be a close, hard fought and exciting game as always. The Bear's coaching staff, players and fans have a lot of respect for the Blues.

It was one of the ugliest Beaver-Graham games I've ever watched. Not much flow from either team, poor officiating, undisciplined emotions. I lost count how many bad/poor snaps from both centers back to their QBs. Bluefield has athletic players with speed as they usually have but this team has a lot of work to do.if they're going to play for a state championship. The line needs to figure out who their assignments are pre-snap and block those guys consistently. Graham has a talented team as well and they should go far the season. Best linebackers I'll see all year! Wishing them all the best for the rest of the season!

Happy for GC. I didn't expect them to win. I thought it was possible they could play with Richlands but thought in the end Richlands would win by 2-3 TD's. Hopefully the coaching & players don't get too hung up on this win though, cause Abingdon could send them back into reality real quick next week.

I was 15 my freshman year, got my driver's license during my sophomore year, started kindergarten when I was 5. I didn't hold back.

The game plan just was not working. They tried most of the game to run the ball between the tackles into the teeth of the Union defense but it really did them no favors. I believe the big kids were gassed for Lee going both ways, Union seemed to really handle them at the LOS. but the QB has some play making ability if given time or a place to run.

As a Richlands fan, I second this... We have a headache at quarterback and a mess at receiver. Sage Webb was a bright spot, but he was worn out by the end of that ball game. Gate City came out and executed a flawless game plan. Gate City is something special and so is big number 45. That boy can fall for at the line of scrimmage and still get eight yards at a time. Richlands was just outcoached, outplayed, and to be frank, more than likely came in over looking this team. This game doesn't give me a lot of hope for the season.

I’m not in the same business as your Union friends in calling kids a “joke”, but yes, this will be a very long year for the Bearcats for a few reasons. Now calling certain coaches a joke, I’m all for that! I no longer have a horse in the race in SWVA football, other than just being a lifelong football fan. If I could change my name from Bearcat Dad, I would, as that moniker is no longer true. My kids are now collegiate athletes. I will always be a VHS fan, but I am a realist. This board is littered with my posts from the last few years, with both positive and negative outlooks on VHS sports. I’m far from perfect on my predictions, but I am right more than I’m wrong. VHS will finish between 0-10 and 3-7 this year for a few reasons, which are...... 1) They have a great group of assistant coaches, that are handcuffed by a head coach who is secretly an egomaniac. He says all the right “Coachspeak” to the media and whatnot, but does not practice what he preaches. 2) The numbers are BAD again for VHS. So much so, that this year, they don’t have a JV team, because they need those bodies to dress out on Friday nights. 3) I love and cheer for those VHS boys, but the fact of the matter is, is that the Jimmies and Joes are just not there to have a successful season this year. They have a few athletes, most of which are very young and very inexperienced in Varsity football. They could potentially be pretty strong in two years. 4) This infusion of youth is in part because, in my opinion, their 3 top returning players are not there. Two because of injury, and one because of a young man’s decision to focus on baseball. I believe that your prediction, @Counts, is very possible. There is a very big talent gap between VHS and most of the teams on their schedule this year.

Glad I could help. Apparently you didnt see later on where I said I mis-read the schedule. Still think 1-3 is very possible. Sorry to not have your opinion, which is obviously correct because it is yours. Are you telling me that Abingdon, Union, Bluefield arent 3 possible losses? Then Radford the next week. 1-4 in first 5 games is very possible. Im hearing Gate City is much improved (i looked at schedule wrong and thought that was a scrimmage). Laugh it up while you can.
