Really hate to get into the fray, but why not, opinions are what they are, and I (along with everyone) have one, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. The spread is the best offense if you have the personal to run it, if not the "T" or "Wing T", the "Pro Set" or any other running formation will work better, (if you have the personal). Richlands has a mixture of personal, different than from past teams. One of the problems with Richlands running the spread this year is lack of speed, and receivers not getting open. I think the QB is a good athlete, but not a good enough passer for the spread. Now as far as the run game, if Richlands chooses to go that way, they have a couple of good backs to go along with the QB as a runner, but when there is no threat to pass, and no misdirection in the backfield, the defense can stack the box all night long, and to be honest, Richlands has an experience line at running the spread and pass blocking, but no so good at run blocking. To be a great run blocking team, we all know that you have to control the line backers, and most linemen who are tried and true pass blockers, are not experienced at controlling line backers. Back in the day (way back) when I played as a lineman, we were taught to move the defensive lineman, go take out the line backer. Not sure Richlands pass blocking line has experience doing this, so with the personal they are between a spread offense and a run offense. I think as the year goes along, they will improve at both, but in my opinion this is were they are now. Does this mean we quit being fans? NO! we get behind them through this rough period and let them know we are there. We all know that Richlands will make the playoffs and be a dangerous team by going through this, after all this is "The Blues" and Mance we're talking about!! GO BIG BLUE" I want to take a minute and thank all of you guys for having this board, and all those who post here, it makes football season even better.3 points -
I won't get into the debate of which formation is better because at the HS level, your personnel should really dictate that. And a good coach will adapt their offense to best take advantage of their players' skill set. Round peg, round hole concept. No one offense will work at every school. Richlands and Giles are perfect examples because they are on complete opposites of the spectrum. Giles has been running the single wing forever. Some years they're great, some years they're good and some years they're not. Offense is the same year in and year out. Only the players change. Everyone knows what they're running, but in the great years, nobody can stop them. Richlands has run the spread for, what, 15 years or so? Same as Giles, great, good and not so good years. The offense has stayed the same, but the players are different each year. Sometimes you have the players to run the offense of your choice and sometimes you don't. When you have athletes and speed everywhere, spread them out and force them to match up. When you have 5 - 6'5", 300 lb lineman and 230 lb RBs, cram it down their throat. Looking at Giles and Richlands, who both have great, long tenured coaches, proves that success has more to do with getting your talent in the right position to succeed rather than any particular offensive scheme. Now, when you're talking about college or NFL, where you can pick your talent, a whole different argument can be made.3 points

Tiger 2000 and one other reacted to Jags52 for a topic
The whole point of the spread offense is to spread people out. It is a lot easier to to run the football against a 5 or 6 man box that is just a fact. Richlands has the ability to go 10 personnel and run for 200 yards a game because usually have one of the best passing attacks in swva because Mance does a great job with the pass concepts and 7 on 7 in the summer. I get the old school idea of you need 2 TE and a FB in the game or you can’t run the ball because that’s what swva is use to but here is a little math for you 5 lineman + 2 TE + 2 backs + 1 QB = 10 players guess how many defensive players you have in the box... 10 and you eliminate all the fancy Q runs that you can do out of the spread to account for that last defender you can block if you have a 6 man box. I would rather take my chances with 5 guys blocking perfect than trying to block 10 people any day of the week. This is all just my opinion though I’m just a young buck that likes a fast paced wide open offense that shows the coach’s creativity instead of 3 yards and a cloud of dust of running the same 4 plays over and over and over again..2 points -
I don't know who you are referring to exactly. I can assure you, Galax coaches and administrators are on here often! Shawn Knight from the VHSL was on record in an article in the Roanoke Times pointing to complaints from Glade in respect to the Galax game being moved. He is in charge of competition for VHSL. It's his job to determine when and where playoff games will be played. I don't believe anyone is disputing the fact that Chilhowie didn't want to play Galax on turf. Not sure why though. They were clearly the better team. I understand the ship has sailed in terms of public opinion on where complaints came from. Believe what you want. I couldn't care less. My only point is, if you believe Mark Dixon isn't up for a challenge, you clearly don't know Mark Dixon! Complaints didn't come from him.2 points

About 25-30% of any given football team truly cares about representing their school/community and upholding the history/tradition of the program. It can be preached all you want but thats just the truth, granted that percentage is probably higher at certain schools. How much did representing the school/community and history/tradition mean to the players at GC last year when their numbers were really low? Not trying to throw off on those kids or the program but its just the truth.2 points -
So, the question is this...was Shelby Valley that good or is the Ridgeview D that vulnerable to the rush. Please say it's Ridgeview, please say it's Ridgeview. haha2 points

You should maybe reserve your opinions until you know the facts! Those kids were coached to do that. I know this first hand. TJ is the david koresh of wise county. Don't be blinded by the light. Those kids were told to do that. Yes, the kid did transfer to Union. So did his little brother. But in no way did he do it on his own. He also apologized to Mac for it after the game the next time they played. Dont forget that little tj commited the hard foul that same play on him. Funny how he is never brought up, just the kid that put him into the wall.2 points

Lil' Leonard's Losers:
swva_havok_fan reacted to ghos88t for a topic
Well Folks, we would like to apologize about the wrong location of the Castlewood/Honaker game last Friday. Seems like Uncle Percy and Cousin Delbert got their A's & H's mixed up while selecting last week's games. Cousin Hoyt told me that I was "Not To Smart" by allowing these two to pick anything. Cousin Hoyt said that it doesn't a math scholar to figure out that P + D = Purty Dumb. Lets pick this week's losers. Giles at Graham The Feds were successful in capturing the Tazewell Bull Pups. Seems like the town of Bristol had put out an APB on the Bull Pups for disturbing the peace, chasing Bearkats up trees, and mauling Bearkats. Seems like The Feds had no problem apprending these "felons" after the Flat Tail Smackin' they received the previous week. Looks like the "Chicken Wang" may still be broken. The Sparatans have had 2 rough outings to start the season against Blacksburg and Christiansburg. Doesn't look like it's going to get any better this Friday. The Feds should have "The Case of The Broken Wang" solve pretty quick with very little trouble. Lil Leonard's Loser : Giles Chilhowie at Narrows Keeping it on The New River. The Big Green Wave will try to over turn a bunch of canoes with a bunch of Wild Indians on the warpath as they reach the Narrows Bridge this Friday Nite. Now the Green Wave is off to a 2 - 0 start. Last week they gave The Shaker Cats a serious scrubbing and we all know how cats don't like water. Now the Warriors of Chilhowie have taken up the warpath just like last year and have already scalped 2 opponents. These Warriors may have lost several braves from last year's war party but they're still a force to be reckoned with. The Big Green Wave will find out quick that these Warriors can canoe on any type of rough water they encounter. Lil! Leonard's Loser: Narrows Patrick Henry at Hurley Cousin Delbert said he would bet the farm on this pick because the loser would be The Rebels. DUH. Well The Glade Rebels will be crossing over The Rock House Mountain to encounter The Cliff Rebels this Friday Nite. Something will have to give this Friday Nite because both Brigades are 2 - 0. The Cliff Rebels have a new General this year and he will try several flanking moves to try to achieve a victory. However, The Glade Rebels are a veteran bunch of fighters with a veteran General. They will stop The Cliff Rebel's flanking moves and launch a counterattack that will pin The Cliff Rebels against their Cliff and force an unconditional surrender. Lil Leonard's Loser: The Cliff Rebels J. I. Burton at Lee Two weeks ago a bunch of Generals crept up the Powell Valley to hunt some Bears. They found a bunch of hungry Bears and ran back down the valley with these Bears clawing their behinds. Now The Black Raiders have been chased by a pack of hungry Wolves. Fought a losing battle against Indians. The Black Raiders will try to launch a surprise raid on the Lee Generals Headquarters this Friday Nite. Look for this toughen Black Raiders to have a successful raid on the Generals' Headquarters. They'll be riding home with a victory. Lil Leonard's Loser: Lee High1 point -

I agree 100% De La Salle won 151 games in a row running the split back veer I promise you they didn’t change their offense after that first Mance is probably the winningest active coach in the area if he thinks Richlands should be in the spread I would stand by that as a fan base and not want to change everything after a 3 point game1 point

Richlands, moving forward
Ryan4VT reacted to Tiger 2000 for a topic
Most everybody is making good points on this topic. It’s not only lack of speed. It’s lack of athleticism. Some of the kids have some speed but maybe don’t necessarily use it to make them a better football player. No matter what offense they run. They have to be able to be athletic and tough. Union would have loved to had Richlands total yards the first half. However , there style of play eventually wore down the blues. Richlands puts a lot of stress on defenses by lining up in the spread. But if they don’t start making plays outside of the one or 2 players that have so far nobody is going to honor the outside guys. When Webb is at w/r take a look at the coverage. The coaches probably see that and know they have a really good matchup somewhere else. But so far no consistency from them to make a play. By the third quarter teams have made adjustments. The blues will get it figured out hopefully. I think graham and ridgeview are at the top right now. Then union , tazewell, gate city and Richlands is somewhere in that mix. Seeds 3 through 6 should all be competitive .1 point -

old_school_blue reacted to redtiger for a topic
Thats where you're wrong, and Union just proved it. Lets say were trying to run in the A gaps, in the spread you're running Inside Zone against 4 guys (typically 2 DTs and 2 LBs) at the high school level, in the T you're running FB Dive against the same 4 guys. Plus your math is wrong; 5 OL + 2 TEs + 2 backs + 1 QB = 10 but the defense has to respect the pass and theyre not gonna put more than 9 in the box, if they go 10 then play action is there all day. I get the concept of relying on fewer blocks to gain yards but what you lose is deception, its hard to be sure who has the ball when Union is running Dive/Belly all night, and unsure linebackers play flat footed and slow. Spread offense may be fun to watch but you know whats not fun to watch? An offense that only scores 3 points. Plus dont forget 2 TE, 2 Back, shotgun ...1 point -

They had 46 last year which is usually the norm, so the numbers weren't low. Any school that goes 1-9 for 2 straight seasons will see a drop off in participation. This is the smallest number of kids I've seen GC have in 47 years of watching them, but after it's all over they may have the biggest heart of any team I've watched. They're not back yet, but I feel the foundation is being put down.1 point

Guys there is no such thing as transitive property in sports. Just because team A beat team B and team B beat team C does not mean that team A beats team C every time. That’s like if Tennessee was able to pull off some upset against let’s say Florida. That does not mean that Georgia State would beat Florida. Just saw this article concerning the championship game of the Appy/BSG P-Nut football league. An excerpt...“This means a lot,” an emotional Phillips said after the game. “Especially because it’s my last year. It’s been great being a Charger. I can’t wait to be a Bear.” Maybe kids in some towns don't care about pride and tradition, but these kids do. To generalize that "95%" of kids don't care is a foolish statement. The risks of playing football are well known, so it takes a lot more than selfish reasons to pursue the game. And if you read the article, it's not a misprint, we have a 7th grader that can put kickoffs into the endzone. A talented group coming up. The future is bright! http://www.thecoalfieldprogress.com/sports/chargers-go-undefeated-to-win-championship/article_972dc8d6-cfea-11e9-addb-5fa2c007c368.html1 point -

Um. Not true. Galax didn't have it moved. Galax didn't make the call, VHSL did after they visited the field AFTER Galax had spent thousands of dollars on new cleats for the kids to play on a muddy field. From my understanding a complaint came from a parent of the team that played the week before. Galax actually suggested to play at Rural retreat, which is a grass field. Everyone saying that Galax had it moved to turf because they didn't want to play on grass is absurd. They hadn't lost but one game on grass since they started playing on a turf field in 2017. They have a better record on grass than turf the past two years. Lol1 point
