I'll definitely read it. Battle was stout on D last year and in '17, but I think this year will be different. One injury can kill a season at the 1A or 2A level, and they've had enough for multiple teams. Just don't get caught looking ahead to Abingdon or Pikeville!

  2. I mean, the guy played for, and was an All-American for, the Old Salt then spent time in the league. If anything, the man may be over qualified for SWVA HS football.

  5. Three TDs for GMen, three different players 21-0, I feel a little bad for VA High. Their guys are trying. They’ve got a lot playing both sides. They really don’t have a choice, maybe ha s a dozen on the sideline. #20 is playing pretty well for Bearcats.

    GW VS Galax!!!

The fact he's found happiness, or maybe just tolerance, in a place as politically jacked as Galax speaks to the character of the man somewhat as well.

They were 3 deep around fence were i was so I would say they had to be around 5000 there. I thought they would be more but I know 5 people that go to all the games that didn't go because it was on TV.

His youngest step-daughter is a senior this year. Not saying that implies anything. Just opens the door a bit.

I’m surprised he’s not moved up the ranks by either school size or division. But don’t mess with happiness.

    GW VS Galax!!!

21 catches for 12 TDs is insane. That means every two times he catches a ball, he scores. 29-775-8 is a fantastic stat line too, that's like 25 yards per catch

7 years ago when I bought a house in Big Stone I begged my kids to transfer, but they were loyal to their teammates and band mates at Central and I respected that. I think if they had it to do over again they would have went to Union. No disrespect at all to the folks from Central. The majority are good folks, but just as the town of BSG has been a much better fit for me I think UHS would have been a better fit for them.

  18. Yea, he's pretty funny, it's all good. I have to admit, he's grown on me a little bit, similar to a fungus, but you know, a likeable fungus that looks like Elvis or something. 😂

Grandpaw Trojan - I feel your pain, I'm from the Big Stone area and 20 years ago I left due to graduating college and finding work in North Carolina. So, I felt when my son was at the age of starting to play ball in high school, I wanted to take him back to where I was from because I knew of the long and deep traditions of football. I remember when I took him to some football games his 9th grade year to let him see Union play, he was overwhelmed by the home town support and spirit. His exact words "I've never seen anything like this before". He didn't know who Thomas Jones was or PV or APP at all, he just seen all the things I was showing him at the games. So, his 10th grade year, I bought a place in Big Stone and he started playing ball there and from day 1, he has loved it from all the support from the school, football moms, and spirit that he sees. I'm just saying that I think this is one of the best decisions I have ever made for my son. If my son wins state, that would be GREAT! But just for the experience that he has had the opportunity to be a part of, is truly overwhelming. The reason Union is so successful in terms of school spirit, is because of a team and community effort that has a real love for the game! ITS TRULY A FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS EXPERIENCE!

  20. Dude, since you are an Appy guy, a true story for you that makes this a small world. I would stay with a local guy and his wife when I would go down that way for derailments which was about 5 times. He was older than me, but was kind of the local railroad host, him and his wife when I would go to Andover and that area in the early 90s for derailments. His son played on two Appy state title teams I think in 91 and 93 or 92 and 94ish, and he started on the line for three seasons. I lost contact with this local dude by 1995. We just fell out of touch as I left the railroad. Fast forward to 2018 and I get a condo at the beach. I'm moving my stuff in and the wife and I are getting it ready for renting and a guy offers us help moving some stuff in and boom, it's him. He lives next door. He and his wife had lived at the beach for 19 years. I hadn't seen him in nearly 25 years and out of the blue, there he is. My wife and I just went to the beach this past Saturday and returned yesterday. The first thing he asked me this time was, "what happened to them G-Men." I knew he would go there, but oh well, a good dude. He's a lot older now, and a die-hard Union guy that follows them closely.

I also don't think Central is quite as good now, with the injuries they have had. So that should be taken into consideration. A lot on here are saying the Pioneers go 0-10, however I think they steal 1 or 2, but who knows in could be wrong and if I am I will admit it.

Ah, yes, the “Rye Cove Rule”. Rye Cove would win the Cumberland with middling records every year and knock one of the powerful BDD/Hogo teams out of the playoffs who were far superior. In 2003, Rye Cove won its district with a 5-5 record, and lost every non-district game in the process. Honaker went 9-1, losing its only game 6-0 AT Haysi, and was left out of the postseason because Honaker didn’t win the BDD. Haysi did everything short of decapitating Rye Cove in Round 1 of the playoffs. In 2004, Rye Cove went 8-2 by feasting on a marshmallow-soft OOC, though they were still blown out at home by Haysi and lost at home to Honaker. George Wythe went 9-1; shut out SEVEN opponents; gave up more than 6 points just twice all season; lost an 8-point game on the road to 9-1 Lebanon, and were left sitting home for the postseason because Lebanon won the Hogo. Eventual state runner-up, Powell Valley, clocked Rye Cove in Round 1 of the playoffs, yet again. P.S. That Haysi team that blew out Rye Cove in 2004 also missed the playoffs in 2004 with a 9-1 record, because they lost a road game to Honaker, thereby losing the BDD to a Honaker team that couldn’t beat a 6-4 Tazewell team at home. As much as we complain about the way it is, it beats watching the 2003 Honaker, 2004 George Wythe, and 2004 Haysi teams, all of which could have won a state title, sitting at home with 9-1 records.

  24. I would have to respectfully disagree with the statement in bold. The VHSL is the governing body of Virginia HS athletics, so they would have the final say so over whether or not that game counts for the points/seeding purpose of a Virginia team. Just because KY views it as whatever doesn't mean that the VHSL is going to automatically say "OK". I think there's precedent on this. In 2015 Dan River received a forfeit from their game against Bartlett Yancey. Dan River said they had a contract, Bartlett Yancey said they didn't. BY had another game scheduled in their place, Person, NC I think, and it was obviously recognized by the NCHSAA as a legitimate game. Even though NC viewed it as BY never having a game with DR, the VHSL didn't automatically view it the same way. They viewed it as a forfeit by BY and awarded DR points as if though they played and won. Now, with that being said, it should be viewed as a forfeit and Ridgeview should be entitled to the 1 or 2 pts it will generate for them. I just don't agree that the VHSL is automatically going to agree with the decision of a neighboring state's HS athletic body just because.

I don't wish this upon any team...but I would like to see it one day so the whole state would have to fix something lol.
