  1. Without wandering too far into a political discussion, I also like the idea of honoring local folks who made a direct contribution to the community. Much better than generic names referencing directional quadrants and/or landscape features IMO.

I’d be willing to bet that you don’t have an MPH in Epidemiology, either. That makes your opinions on the topic about the same as everyone else’s. Why leftists get so butthurt when people use objective data to disagree with them, God only knows. As for recruiting, anyone with a computer and 4th grade math skills can track this stuff. It’s not exactly neuroscience. Not my fault that objective data pretty clearly shows exactly the point Sixcat was trying to prove.

  3. @RichlandsAlum that was my point, Nothing wrong with naming schools after presidents or whatever but it doesn't carry a lot of meaning. The directional names are terrible.Wise County has Central(terrible generic name) and Eastside(somewhat better). The only thing that may be worse is Patriot or Freedom (which VA now has 2 of). If a school system is going to change a schools name I like the more meaningful names better. Im ok with them changing the names, but it is a rabbit hole we have to be wary of. If were judging historical figures as Good or Bad based on one bad thing they did then they're all gonna come up short. Were looking at historical figures and their actions as black or white when we all know they're grey. Jackson was someone who was a traitor to his country, a patriot to and defender of his state, and someone who upheld slavery just like millions of others of his time, and held racist views just like the vast majority of the US during his time. Weve also adopted this viewpoint that the South was evil and the North was pro black equality, and thats simply not true. Judging either sides attitude toward blacks from todays viewpoint theyre both terrible.

He can better support his family by not being a teacher. He doesn’t need to teach to coach. There is no impending doom smoke signal here. Dude just wants more time with his growing family. The current and former Richlands basketball coaches are non-teachers. Fred works for the town (although he did work for the school system at one point in time) and Fuller owns a pharmacy. The end is not near. The world is not crashing down. Nothing changes.

    Reclassification

It defeats the idea of an equal playing field, especially in the smallest classification. The difference between 1,500 and 2,500 is relatively small, but the difference between 250 and 450 is huge. Not that you all dont know that

    Reclassification

This reminded me of a passing rumor that I heard several weeks ago. A good friend who is on the football staff of the local high school said that there is discussion of another massive realignment that would reduce the current number of classifications to 4 or 5. Whether that's true or not, this coming school year would probably be a good opportunity for the VHSL to thoroughly examine this issue and come up with something more logical than the current arrangement.

We're still going to be in Phase 3 as of the end of September. Just a matter of how honest Northam will be about the fact that he's already made up his mind.

Bristol, VA is working on changing the names of 3 elementary schools that have confederate names. It’s going to happen across the country.

Yep. UVA has the upper hand until Tech beats them. Until then, VT fans have to deal with it. Just like VT fans have to deal with Bristol. Just like we had to deal with the 09 Chick Fil A Bowl.

  13. We have multiple schools, including a governor’s magnet school, named after a bunch of slaveholders. Where do we draw the line.

It's PC to not have a school named after a Confederate general? Learn something every day. I'd bet the black students just loved saying they went to a school named after a general who fought for the right to keep their great great grandparents as property.

The issue as I see it is that the VHSL is the sanctioning body for Virginia high school athletics. Theoretically, school districts could band together and enact guidelines that run contrary to the VHSL’s stated policy. However, if they do, the games would not only not count for any official tally, but could also lead to some sort of penalties from the VHSL for violating their policies/procedures. I could see the VHSL forcing a program to suspend operations for year(s) should they choose to buck the VHSL. That’s apart from the liability issue, which would be financially devastating if a school district went against the VHSL and had an athlete become ill.

Gotta feel bad for the kids. Covid presents little to no danger to them at all basically but yet they're having some of the best times of their lives stripped from them. They have no control over the decisions Northam their school board and the vhsl are going to make but yet these decisions are going to effect them directly. ADs and athletic programs can slap together some fundraisers maybe get some donations and get some money back from missing a year of sports. Most if not all teachers and administrators are still going to have a job when things fully go back to normal. You don't get another chance if you're a senior who's trying to earn a scholarship to play ball and get school paid for. All it takes is one breakout game for a kid and that can be the difference between not going to college or going to college. One good season can be the difference between a kid going to school paid for or being in student debt for 5 years and once that window of opportunity is gone, it's gone. You don't get cancelled games or seasons back. You don't get to go back and have prom or homecoming or any other significant event you have in highschool. I know the bigger picture is health and safety for everyone and I completely understand that but you can't help but feel for the kids.

VA players won’t be headed to Tennessee. They announced that their HS sports season will not start on time in late August. That includes football. Other states will eventually do the same. We are getting closer and closer to no sports for 2020 at the high school level.
