  1. My second born son was just named to the varsity soccer team at Liberty-Bedford. Pretty sure he is the only freshman that was taken. They had good numbers at tryouts and it's a very deep pool in terms of talent. All three of my boys are pretty gifted physically. But #2 is the best athlete among them by far. He also wrestles (won three event medals in his first year) and played pretty much every down on the JV football team this spring season. Kid has also suffered mightily this past year due to the various shutdowns. So this good news is certainly welcome and I just can't help but crow about it.

  2. It seems like Narrows has finally met a decent team? The Pioneer District needs disbanded. Terrible terrible district

    COVID hits Burton

Kids-meaning 12 and under...not virtual adults like what are in a high school football locker room. The science is pretty clear that it spreads the quickest in low ventilated areas that are tightly populated. I would agree that on the field it isn’t very likely to spread, but in a locker room is a completely different story. Also, while I am very sad for our kids-this idea of “they have been robbed of so much” is not in line with the messaging that we usually provide to our youth. We tell them that they aren’t promised tomorrow and that they have to be able to handle adversity, but then we lose our minds and claim it will scar them for life because they miss a season of a high school sport, or a year of school?!? Some perspective is probably in order here.

  4. Definitely odd that they are not enforced the same way. Unless they think it's easier to suddenly turn off an artificial noise than 50 teenagers. 🙃 I noticed that Graham's band played almost continuously the entire game. At first, I thought they were just doing it when Union was on offense, but then realized they did the same while Graham had the ball too. Don't know of any other around here that plays so much during a game. If they start banning cowbells and yelling, they might as well not have fans there either.

  5. Thats illegal isnt it? Shouldn't be! If a band is not allowed to be playing during huddles and at the LOS then something like a train horn shouldn't be. Cowbells and screaming fans is perfectly fine but something like that is a "one man wrecking crew" for communication on the field.

  6. This is probably why a lot of people hate that horn. I'm all for it at various times throughout the game especially if your team scores but grown men blowing it incessantly while the other team is huddled & then at the line of scrimmage seems a bit much. Others may disagree and that’s your prerogative. I can remember Cam Allen not even been phased at all by it but not every HS QB has the composure that he did at that game in BSG.

  7. Is this really a surprise to anyone? Except maybe Narrows folks, no offense intended.

  8. My brother was in the MED when it was bad. The only thing I would say to that is, I don’t see a Graham joining the Pioneer to raise the level of play.

Cant argue with the Pioneer being weak and being no prep at all for the playoffs. Also remember when the MED was this bad.

    COVID hits Burton

I 1000% agree that there are some real effects of lockdowns that we are going to have to contend with-particularly when it comes to the high risk kids that you speak of. However, more people have died from COVID in the US than died in WW2...that’s the kind of death toll we are looking at here, so imagine what it could have been had we not mitigated (or how much loss we could have prevented if we had handled it better). The high risk kids you speak of are also the kids most likely to be living with grandparents/extended family. While the virus may not have a lot of impact on kids physiologically-if they carry it home to the highest risk category...things could have been brutal. Just think back to December when hundreds of people were dying/hospitalized in our rural area and our hospitals were stressed to the maximum. Anyway, to get back on track, I’m sick for Burton’s kids-absolutely heartbreaking for them, but it was a possibility for every team that played this season-like someone said above...along the lines of Russian roulette.

  11. While on the field I never heard the crowd, band or cheerleaders, sounds other than the cadence never bothered me . If you know what you are doing you can hear your Q B over all the noise in the world.

  12. That would have been the Union game in 2017 in Big Stone Gap! What an atmosphere it was that day!!!

  13. I think they should cut out talking real loud too lol!!! Hard too believe people fuss about noise at a football game. Has no one ever been to a UT of VT game it's suppose to be loud. The horns loud and the band but not loud enough for the players to not be able to hear the QB.

Hazard, KY would disagree with you-it spreads very quickly and easily in a locker room enclosed environment

It’s a big crock as far as whole teams having to quarantine like this in my opinion. I know coaches have died but I bet if we researched individual instances, those who did get it, didn’t contract it at practice from players. I’d say more likely from family, work, etc. If you follow the science, kids are unlikely to pass it to adults and kids have a 99.999999% recovery rate. At some point things have to get back to some semblance of normalcy.

  16. that doesn't seem too fair. I've saw film (u-tube) from appo side with electronic siren blaring before, during, and after plays. works for one should work for all, just saying. personally, I say bring all the noise makers in the world to create the loudest game ever, each week. players and TRUE fans of a great game will always appreciate it. I see a lot of u-tube how to build horn tutorials throughout this crowd in the near future, say august 21.

  17. Last season at the Appo/Graham game, Graham was asked not to bang cymbal while Appo was on offense or band play if I remember correctly while Appo was on LOS. I only knew because I was sitting near the band when the guy came over.

  19. Within reason I agree with you (or at least use to agree with you...before these flop deals for homefield advantage) I love a good atmosphere but I have to agree Train horns while a team is on the line is too much. A team could have ONLY ONE fan in the stands and if he has a train horn he alone can screw up a team from calls at the LOS. Now a groupd of fans with bells and screaming...Yea, allow every bit of that!!! That's what you want for your team!! Now I have a problem with the "let the home team do what they want come the last two rounds of the playoffs this year. I HATE the idea that a low team can host for the mere reason that the other region hosted last year. Homefield should be the highest rated team at that point. This year even even is worse that one team will host the state championship.!!!! With this I say both teams should be allowed to bring a horn, band, whatever they want to at least try to level the playing field for the visiting team.

I dont understand how these decisions are being made. I guess the "within 6' for 15 minutes" guideline means absolutely nothing

  22. If anything it should really be open season for the home stadium. I can understand not letting the away team bring some big noise device but home field should be able to have most anything they want.

  23. gonna go out on a limb here and say that more than 75% of every game in the past 30 years probably has/had a band playing all through a game. that's part of the atmosphere, NOISE! Train horns are not everyone's cup of tea, don't sit near them just as you can choose not to sit by the band, B.O., or in-laws. I'm not certain any kid has ever said I can't stand a loud game while they were playing. Winners will not complain about factors they can't control during a game but losers on the other hand sometimes have trouble accepting the fact it may have been their fault they didn't perform their best and got beat. So why not blame the noise level? makes sense! "I missed my block because the drumline in the bleachers" "I knew the count and could see the ball but jumped anyway because of a horn 100yards away" "I forgot to read my key because they were stomping in the bleachers" A real problem would occur if they played a noise like "Rocky Top" lol

  24. I have two problems with the rules stated. First it should be treated equally the same and no different for the band vs noise makers. A sudden noise is much more distracting than the band playing something. Secondly, I have been at many games that the band starts playing and it carries through several plays. So there isn't even equal enforcement.

  25. Interesting about the train going by. Would have never thought about that. I did do a search and found this. Guess they added it. One note of difference..."live ball" is defined differently for the band than it is for an amplified noise maker. 54-18-1 Bands-Participating schools' bands/pep bands are not allowed to play during live ball situations at any VHSL event. Any deviation from this policy will constitute a VHSL Sportsmanship Violation under Section 30 (Penalties/Fines) and may be defined as excessive unsportsmanlike conduct ($300 fine). Note: For the purpose of this rule in football, live ball situations begin with the offense breaking the huddle or for no huddle offenses when the offense begins getting into a formation. 54-19-1 Artificially and/or Amplified Noisemakers-The use of artificially and/or amplified noisemakers (examples of this include, but are not limited to, train or diesel horns, amplified guitar note or riff ) are not allowed during live ball situations at any VHSL event. Any deviation from this policy will constitute a VHSL Sportsmanship Violation (Excessive Unsportsmanlike Conduct - $300 Fine). Note: For the purpose of this rule in football, live ball situations begin with the ball being handled by the snapper.

  26. I bet you have more faith in the Radford AD than I do in the giles AD....which is none by the way

  27. At that time, no. There was no VHSL rule against it. I've heard they were going to add that to the sportsmanship rule along with the band playing once the offense gets to the line of scrimmage, but I haven't seen anything further, so not sure if the change was made.

  29. In all fairness. Someone more qualified than me should be considered. I am just a fan who loves football and hotdogs from the concession stand. If I was a coach, I would run the annexation of Puerto Rico.

  32. Heartbreaking...💔 Tim Hayes @Hayes_BHCSports J.I. Burton's football players and coaches had a Zoom meeting today after finding out they wouldn't be playing in Friday's Region 1D finals vs. Holston due to a positive COVID-19 test: "It was tough. Very emotional," head coach Jacob Caudill said. #HCFH #VHSL great state
