  1. And so it is decreed that, each year, the various districts of Class 1 Region C and D would offer up, in tribute, one team of brave young men to battle the Riverheads Gladiators in a pageant of honor, courage and sacrifice.

  3. My second born son was just named to the varsity soccer team at Liberty-Bedford. Pretty sure he is the only freshman that was taken. They had good numbers at tryouts and it's a very deep pool in terms of talent. All three of my boys are pretty gifted physically. But #2 is the best athlete among them by far. He also wrestles (won three event medals in his first year) and played pretty much every down on the JV football team this spring season. Kid has also suffered mightily this past year due to the various shutdowns. So this good news is certainly welcome and I just can't help but crow about it.

  5. I'm not referring to any other conversation that people have posted the last couple of weeks but I do have a couple of shoutouts #1 I wanna give a shoutout to JONES #44 for all the tremendous work and the team member he has been to help Union move on to the playoffs. #2 A big thanks to UNION'S HAMMER for bringing the train horn on the road tonight. I'm sure you got the Union crowd fired up and helped to cheer on the bears. #3 Congrats to the entire team...you are all powerhouses to be reckoned with Like I've said Southwest VA's football is unbelievable and I'm glad we can be a part of it.

  7. Congratulations-one of my family members lived her life just like you-went to the beach, brought back COVID and killed her mother. Iā€™m sure sheā€™s glad she took that beach vacation and got some wonderful memories. Itā€™s amazing how ā€œlive your life, let others live theirsā€ gets skewed when itā€™s one of your own that is impacted.

Can some of you be more dramatic or judgmental? Good grief! Live your life, let others live theirs; agree to disagree. Every life lost is tragic no matter the circumstances. I took (continue to take) precautions, & even got the vaccine but I also chose to live my life, traveled & went on two vacations, visited family, had holiday celebrations...unlike @Bluefield Researcher, I have children and grandchildren and we have wonderful memories. Be blessed friends!

  9. So your happiness is more important than potentially the lives of others. Got it. If you can't see how that's incredibly selfish and harmful, I can't help you. People don't always have the option to stay home. But I'm glad you're willing to let other people die as long as it doesn't inconvenience you in the slightest. And you called me selfish for just pointing out that the risk is not just to you. I'm sure you favor getting rid of drunk driving laws, all laws surrounding AIDS, etc... since you believe personal freedom completely outweighs public.safety.

Ooh ooh I love these people. Did you know only about 80 people per year due from shark attacks? You really have to try swimming with sharks itā€™s awesome-refuse to live your life in fear dude!!! Or did you know that less than 1 out of every 100K people die via electrocution each year? Refuse to live your life in fear man-pick up those electrical wires yourself after a storm-donā€™t wait for AEP to do it!

  12. One program had won big games before the other hadnā€™t. It still rings true. Union was the more prepared and better coached squad. Pretty embarrassing loss for Central. If you live in Wise County, all any of us have heard for 10 years is how this group would go to state. Just a bad L, more talented team lost and thatā€™s a credit to Travis, the kids and the program theyā€™ve built. Central was clearly overconfident in the first quarter and it cost them the game. Sleeping on a team with that tradition and being flat falls on the coaching staff.

Again-my post may not apply to you. The point remains that plenty of people, especially in our area, have used the mantras of ā€œfreedomā€ and ā€œno fearā€ to act irresponsibly in the midst of a deadly pandemic. I have disagreed with Ralph plenty lately for what I consider to be nonsensical guidelines. That said-this thing spreads rapidly in close quarters-we have an abundance of evidence of that...

    COVID hits Burton

Hereā€™s the thing-at one point we were dealing with an unknown variable...no one knew how deadly Covid would be or the ins and outs of it-our lockdowns and messaging were poorly executed. If we were being attacked by a foreign power and thousands of people were dying daily-most people wouldnā€™t think twice about following orders and staying in their homes and locking down. And yet, we had people essentially saying that their freedom to be ignorant deserved the same respect as scientific expertise and thus the US has over 570,000 dead. Now that we know the risks/transmission/have access to vaccines and treatments etc things like high schools sports and activities are much more doable. However, to mock people for taking precautions due to a deadly virus is insanity.

  18. I understand your point and it is not taken as ill will towards anyone. You make your points without name calling and I respect that. YES. It would be worth it. Would it be heartbreaking? Absolutely. My point is why is the remote possibility of dying from Covid different from the remote possibility of dying from a car crash? Any other football tragic injury such as a head injury? Any other communicable virus disease such as the flu, or AIDS or SARS? Would my grief be any different if my child died in a car wreck? Should I never let my child get in a car? The risk from Covid is real but it is minimal. Yes take reasonable precautions such as washing your hands with soap and covering your mouth. But why are we stopping the world for this?

  19. Missing the open receivers and penalties were the mistakes I was referring to, I believe it had more to do with Galax themselves instead of the Narrows defense.

But the problem is man, you aren't just affecting your life if you spread a deadly virus to someone who is less equipped to handle it. If it was only about personal risk, it.would be different but it's not.

  22. You are spot on here. Shane has done a great job and I sure as hell wouldn't want to come in after Dixon but he has done it the right way in my opinion. The QB was down certainly not a fumble and Galax got pass happy after the first drive of the second half. Although Galax had people open many many times that the QB just didn't see which hurt them and got them behind the chains. Although he threw some strikes last night as well. Cole is an athlete for sure. I give Narrows front seven alot of credit they flowed to the ball extremely well and was physical (certainly the best we have seen all year.) like in stated earlier Galax had receivers open for days all night, Narrows just hadn't seen that type of speed all year and it showed against the their DBs. Although I cannot figure out why Narrows NEVER ONCE covered our slot receiver when we went trips? I also have to give Galax Defense credit to shut down Narrows like they did and hold them to less than a hundred yards total offense was an impressive showing. They will have to repeat it next week against a very athletic and mobile QB in Holston.. Congrats to Narrows to a great year.

I thought Galax got pass-happy and all but abandoned the run in the second half. The 4th back on the depth chart had all the carries in the second half. It led to the offense getting badly out of rhythm. The play on the goal line was a situation where the side judge looked around for help. When none came, he made something up. At least thatā€™s what I saw. It was certainly NOT a fumble. I donā€™t believe Galax has played 4 solid quarters all season. If they are able to beat Holston, they better figure out a way to do that or Riverheads will embarrass them. With that said, I like what Coach Allen is doing. He is taking what Dixon built and is putting his own stamp on it. Heā€™s a solid head coach.

  26. Galax drove right down the field to start the second half and was on the one yard line when a controversial fumble was called. From where I was sitting it looked like the QB was laying on his back when the ball came out but someone else may have had a better view. I'm not sure how much it was the Narrows defense shutting them down or Galax making mistakes on the offensive side of the ball because they still moved the ball pretty well when they were not making mistakes. I'm not trying to take nothing away from Narrows play in the second half it just appeared to be more on Galax shutting them self down then the other teams defense. With that being said congratulations to Narrows on one hell of a year.

  27. How much of an impact do you think basketball had? We were behind everyone else at the start with our state title in bball. Jenkins, Rasnick, Honeycutt, Ray and Bunch all probably took some time to get up to speed. Also, what a run here lately for Union. Thatā€™s our third region title in a boys sport this year.

  29. Just getting home. Proud of our boys and of their season. 2nd half adjustments made on defense really did the job and gave them a puncher's chance. Galax won this game with their defense though also. Once the power run game was stuffed, they really struggled to move the ball. Best of luck to Galax going forward. Always pull for NRV teams to bring a title home.

  30. Union is not the same team they were in games 1-5. I think they finally found some things that clicked against Eastside. They came out determined last week and this week to win. Central was truly a great team this year. I think they may have come out a little overconfident and got rattled in the 1st quarter. By the time they got things together, it was too late. Much like the first game for Union. Bears didn't dominate, but they played good enough to win. Hats off to the Warriors on a great season.

Itā€™s a tough situation for sure. But, covid affects kids, too. A couple days before the Burton/Twin Springs game, a student from Twin Springs died from it. When you put it in that perspective, a game isnā€™t very important. It sucks that kidsā€™ participation in sports is being impacted, but it is what it is for now.

    COVID hits Burton

I 1000% agree that there are some real effects of lockdowns that we are going to have to contend with-particularly when it comes to the high risk kids that you speak of. However, more people have died from COVID in the US than died in WW2...thatā€™s the kind of death toll we are looking at here, so imagine what it could have been had we not mitigated (or how much loss we could have prevented if we had handled it better). The high risk kids you speak of are also the kids most likely to be living with grandparents/extended family. While the virus may not have a lot of impact on kids physiologically-if they carry it home to the highest risk category...things could have been brutal. Just think back to December when hundreds of people were dying/hospitalized in our rural area and our hospitals were stressed to the maximum. Anyway, to get back on track, Iā€™m sick for Burtonā€™s kids-absolutely heartbreaking for them, but it was a possibility for every team that played this season-like someone said above...along the lines of Russian roulette.

  48. that doesn't seem too fair. I've saw film (u-tube) from appo side with electronic siren blaring before, during, and after plays. works for one should work for all, just saying. personally, I say bring all the noise makers in the world to create the loudest game ever, each week. players and TRUE fans of a great game will always appreciate it. I see a lot of u-tube how to build horn tutorials throughout this crowd in the near future, say august 21.
