  2. Yeah, over the last few years the feeder program has taken a beaten. To many little league managers playing CEO and forgetting that it's a game for kids to enjoy. When they close good programs down so they can manipulate who wins and who doesn't, it not only hurts the players, it washes away the feeder program. IMO, bad feeder program management has really affected the upper levels. Maybe I'm just old school, but the way I see it is that the high school team of the future will be found in a good feeder program, where kids still enjoy playing the game win or loose.

  3. At one time the Richlands little league football program was a well oiled machine. I can't speak to the status it is now but 8 or 10 years ago it was doing good. Richlands hosted the Big Blue Bash as an end of season tournament that was always a lot of fun and attracted some great teams. You are 100% right. If the feeder program fails so will the high school eventually. Travel basketball, soccer, baseball, knitting, and whatever else travel team parents can come up with has crushed youth football. Not to mention "concusions". I'm old school and I have always been part of the tackle football or nothing crowd. Im not so sure the folks that push flag football for 6 year olds may be on to something as hard as it is for me to admit.

Ricky will do well at that position and will make every effort to bring in a good coach. I feel the new coach should be someone from out of area, but I'm sure the school board will have a lot to say about the decision.

  7. Disappointed as we may be, this has definitely been a problem over the years, lots of schools saying no to Union. Outside of KY schools, I'm unaware of the coaches saying no to anyone. Tenn High was on the line a couple of years ago, but they couldn't get open dates to work out. Science Hill too, but they didn't want to come to BSG. The biggest problem with Tennessee schools is the embarrassment of getting beaten by a VA school less than half their size. And most of the ones that are the same size have either refused to play, are not practical distance wise, or wouldn't really offer much of a challenge. Wouldn't mind seeing the Bears play Bluefield if it weren't for the distance. That's the only reason I don't care for the Graham match up. Well, that and the powerpoint/playoff issue. There are many, many Tennessee schools that would offer great games AND are less than 2 hours away. Maybe next cycle.

You mean you have to take in consideration several factors such as your geographical location, available date, travel time, and gate money? I thought every team would just set a date no matter the location and base it solely on competition.

  9. Were you on the line when the schedule was made? It takes two schools to schedule a game. You don't know who all said no and who Union may have said no to. I would be willing to bet Union would prefer not to play TW but that may have been the only choice.

If that really were a factor in this case, no one outside of Tazewell County would win in Region D, ever. But, that's not the case here, and really has nothing to do with anything being discussed here.

Are you telling me that the electronics that you speak of are only sold in Lee County, Virginia? Union High School, not far from Lee County, just won a State Championship in Basketball and was in the State-Semifinals in Football... Graham has always been smaller than Lee High School, yet, they compete in Football and Basketball most seasons. A number of other schools locally could be used as an example. Maybe electronics or lazy kids aren't the problem. Could be the adults???
