  1. Well, if you're going to hang out here you need to understand a few things: Union folk are never happy. Giles is experiencing a civil war. Tazewell somehow has become overrated. Graham is Graham Ridgeview will only go as far as their Dline will take them. We can't figure out Gate City Lee is on the upswing. Eastside is on the downswing. We're not sure about Burton. The whole damn board dislikes Central. We have our own internal drama, so you may not go directly to the front of the line. Enjoy.

    Thomas Walker @ Union

Sykes showed he could throw the ball well in the Elizabethton scrimmage, and the GW benefit game. I am taking nothing away from the current QB, the kid is an athlete and can make plays, but not from the QB position. Put him in the backfield or at WR and get him some touches, and let him make some plays. I agree he would make a difference on the defensive side of the ball as well, not scared of contact. Cochran not on the field blows my mind, the kid put in a ton of work from last season to this season, and from what I heard had a excellent summer at the 7 on 7 games, and I thought for sure he would be out there on the defensive side of the ball. Satterfield not touching the ball more than 4 to 5 times a game is just insane, Satterfield has blocked for every running back that he has played with and got his few carries here and there, and seems to always be getting tough yards, and running hard nosed, and BAM he no longer gets more than 4 to 5 carries a game......... Not sure why Union took Zach Hall from center, he has been a starter at center his whole high school career if I am not mistaken, and Izaak Keith is stout at the MLB position, and had played on the line for a couple of years, and now he's not even playing offense. I understand that you want to keep as many kids from going both ways as much as possible, but when the job is not getting done, it's time to suck it up, and put your best 11 out there, whether you have to have kids going both ways or not. Sitting at 3-2, with Thomas Walker, Ridgeview, Abingdon, Central and John Battle left, you would think changes would be made, and the best 11 would be placed on the field, no matter whose mommy's or daddy's get their feelings hurt.

  3. What Graham person in this thread said GW was a pushover? You’re just making up 💩!

  4. Yeah but only took Union 2 plays to score though. TW looks to be just keeping game close running play rock down every snap. Good coaching

  8. I never said that GW was a “pushover”. GW is a decent enough team that will probably meet Galax for the 1C title in Week 3 of the playoffs. That being said, which GW team will show up? The one that played Radford tightly in Week 1 or the one that eked out a win last week over Rural Retreat? Regardless of which one shows up, Graham is an entirely different animal than they’ve seen thus far. Graham isn’t putting up 60 points on anybody this year, but they win games with 28-45 points by grinding other teams into submission. That’s what I think will happen to GW. Graham will score its customary 35-ish points and what GW scores will be exclusively against Graham’s reserves. A Ram truck puts up pretty good resistance, but it doesn’t matter when it meets a bulldozer. Thus I see this game.

    Week 6 Scores/Updates

Heckuva ballgame. The Dogs scored late in the 3rd to make 7-0. They stopped GW 3 times inside the 15 yardline on downs, once on the 2 right before half. GW blocked a 26 yard fg with 1:20 to go in the game and were moving the ball but Martinsville had a pick 6 with 17 seconds left to seal the win. Was a really good high school game with a great atmosphere. GW is very young this year so this was the Dogs chance to get them. First time we have beat the Eagles since 1987.

  15. Get over it. Anybody with a brain knows that they were forced to throw the ball a lot because of the lack of a running game. Go slam another team. We're all full up with the insults here.

  16. This mindset is likely one of the main reasons for the decline in long-term coaching careers. It seems that many of the area schools change coaches almost every other year. The demands of coaching now require dealing with the effects of changing values and prioritization of those values. Among these, expectations of instant gratification in the form of “win now”, despite the culture of “me first” over team. I, imagine, resignations to spend time with family, indeed the right decision, is because the requirement to spend more time year-round to win, without long-term appreciation and support for teaching valuable lessons. Instead, it’s “do what I want, so that I can be a star and get a scholarship.” This isn’t meant as an indictment on any individual, but how our society is becoming as a whole. Coaches are often the means to and end, nowadays. I was very fortunate to have played in an era where the values were more predicated on hard work and teamwork. I can point to the application of those values in my life every day. I can really appreciate those who continue to Coach for the right reason, despite more effort for fewer rewards.

    Thomas Walker @ Union

If you go back and watch Graham game they where literally leaving a receiver uncovered on some plays because they knew Union couldn't throw. Like we've mentioned its not bashing the kid he's just stuck playing a position he shouldn't be playing and he himself would probably rather be at another position.

  22. I don’t see anyone bashing #10, like I said I think he’s one of the most athletic kids in the Mountain 7! Does that mean he is the best option for QB? I don’t think so, when James Mitchell played QB in the Wildcat when Turner got hurt that year, yes Mitchell was probably the most overall talented kid on the field at any game Union played, but that don’t mean you want him being your starting QB! To whoever said, until Union shows a little passing game and shows teams they can complete a few and try to keep the defense honest, they will see 11 men in the box, with all 11 coming to stop the run with no worry at all about the passing game, is this #10 fault?? No definitely not, but at some point a few changes have to be made, or you will never make it past Round 1! Id hate to see the Sykes kid leave, but as a 10th grader, that could start on most teams around here, I can understand the frustration, everybody says “oh he is young, and hasn’t had the experience at the varsity level”, are also the ones seeing 3 and 4 freshman starting as well, and I have no problem with freshman starting if they are 1 of the best 11 on the field!

  23. Who's bashing him he's a great player but not a QB. If Sykes was QB defenses wouldn't have 11 men on LOS to stop the run either. And quit liking your own comments there's 3 new Union posters on here that all agree with each other it's obvious you've opened 3 accounts

  24. When I was at Elon College in the mid 70's they had the Oxendine brothers from Lumberton playing on the football team. Those guys were really good, played defense and made a bunch of tackles every game. They were really good guys off the field also.

All the games in our area were moved to Monday and one on Tuesday It's a gorgeous 82 degree cloudless day here today, but the teams haven't been able.to practice for 3 days because of hurricane and tropical storm warnings. . Think we'll watch John Carroll Catholic at Cardinal Newman in West Palm Beach on Monday. Both are state title contenders in their divisions. On Tuesday we may go watch Treasure Coast at #10 (national) Chaminade-Madonna in Hollywood, provided I feel like navigating the Miami metro rush hour traffic, which is truly a white knuckle ride.

  32. This end of Va will never see the group of athletes ever that came thru in the 90s. From Shoemaker Houseright Beasley at GC to Julius Thomas Josh Warren who went to Wake Forest and Zirkle at PV and Turner, Clark snd Mabe at Appy Sensabaugh at Norton and Hamilton at Clintwood. I know I’m forgetting some but what a great decade of football for such a small area

I see Radford playing in Salem this year unless someone from D knocks them out. I know seeing them at Appo last year they were very talented and their QB was quite good.

  38. 😂😂😂Yeah, because us Graham fans have the Richlands’ coach & principal on speed dial! Y’all keep all that drama on the western end of the county. We don’t want any part of it! 😂😂😂

  39. Yeah, he did say that but you see I consider UVAObserver more of a Tazewell guy so I wasn’t thinking of his comment as being a Graham person when I responded to you. None of the main Graham posters on this board like Mountain Football or myself ever said anything about Graham thinking GW was a pushover.

    Tazewell @ Grundy

Here’s some things about the matchup and this year’s Grundy team I’ve came across: 1. This will be 75th game between the two schools. Tazewell holds the edge 41-31-2. Only 5 times have the teams alternated wins/losses over 3 game spans. It seems like there has always been a 3,4,5 game winning streak by either team over the years. 2. Scammell is averaging 149 yards and 2td’s per game which is actually less than he averaged last year. 3. Grundy’s had two different players throw touchdown passes. 4. Jonah Looney has scored 3 touchdowns and I feel like he never gets talked about. 5. Grundy has another Garon Marcum on the roster. (Freshman RB/WR). The elder Garon’s son, I assume?

  43. Richlands is a hot mess right now with a group calling for McGee, Vencil, & Tarter to go. Seems like a select core group stirring the pot & getting others in an uproar to take up the cross with them so to speak. Kid wasn’t playing the entire game anymore & coaches trying some different stuff. Mommy got mad (egged on by some former coaches , hearsay) & kid quit and possibly transferring to Lebanon. I’m not sure why anyone would want to coach in that end of the county these days with all that drama. Tarter is a much better person & dedicated person to tough it out for those boys than most would be.

Exactly #10 can play all over the field just not QB. It’s not 1980 you can’t win anymore just running 5 plays

GC is fundamentally sound, and is a much better team than they appeared to be against Richlands. Look forward to seeing how they match up with Ridgeview. Union's coaches have to put the pride behind them and realize they need to make changes at QB. They have the talent to do so many things on offense IF they utilize EVERY weapon at their disposal. #10 would be awesome at receiver, RB(on jet sweeps, counters, etc) and could really be used at DB.
