  1. If he's anything like me, that would be end, guard and tackle. End of the bench, guarding the water cooler and tackling anybody that comes near it.

I think they should cut it to 6 and give the top 2 seeds a bye week.

Other than the first round of 1 vs 8 and 2 vs 7 that usually leads to a sacrificial slaughter, I really don't have an issue with what there is now. Give these kids one more time to play together before they leave high school to move on in life. Besides, upsets do happen and gives us something to really talk about when they do. Also hopefully teaches teams to never let your guard down and always play each game like it will be a fight. Only thing I will complain about is the rematches. Much prefer to see a new team.

Under that proposed system yes, it wouldn't mean much. In that system neither Altavista or Essex would have been 1A when Haysi made their last runs 13 and 14, Galax may have also been moved up based on recent success. A championship would have been very likely but champions of what? Haysi has 5 state semifinals appearances in football, that's basically the best of the rest, which is what the proposed system would create. In a way it makes me appreciate the approach KY takes in basketball, yeah a bottom division team is likely never going to win a championship but just making it to the state semis or even quarterfinals is an accomplishment. Less, to an extent yes because we all know Westfield being the MUCH larger school would thrash Galax. '15 Galax stood above their peers, schools of equal size. That system also punishes players from dominant programs, with smaller schools talent obviously ebbs and flows. The kids caught in an valley pay for the success of those from the peak, for a season at least. Im looking at this from the perspective of an adult looking at a kids game, for the kids that's more equitable and makes sense in terms of competition but I wouldn't ever want to hear anyone brag about winning a championship.

    Apology

hey guys. I'm going ahead and say I'm sorry that I haven't been on here for quite some time, with work and every thing else going on. I haven't had a chance to reply to some SWVA Football topics. In all, again I apologies. hopefully i can get back into the swing of things and start replying to some football topics

  6. RV’s defense has quietly taken on the leadership role for this team. It is more consistent than it’s offense and the Pack have been able to depend on it when it’s offense can’t seem to find its footings. They are stout up front with the best LB group in Region 2D (Hill, Honaker and Hartsock or Triple H) and a shut down CB with Beavers and a rangy physical SS in Counts. I enjoy watching them more than their offensive counterparts of late. They are still susceptible to busted plays or over pursuit and an unsportsmanlike or two but they are good enough to keep them in any game.

Top 4 in PP is plenty in my opinion for each region but it’s all about money for the VHSL.

I don't have time to go into all of the intricate details and my explanation was overly simplistic of a much more complex and nuanced system. Maybe living on the North Carolina state line, having local TV coverage come from both NC and VA, having several friends affiliated with various sports in NC, and having followed the progress of most NCHSAA happenings most of my life, I sometimes assume others have invested some time in researching that new system as I have. I couldn't recommend doing that more. It's really a forward-thinking approach to a complex issue. Here is a good place to start.

  13. I just can't see Abingdon hanging with Ridgeview. Abingdon does have more numbers and more kids to choose from, but I just think the physical play from Ridgeview will let them come out on top in this one. RV - 28 Abingdon - 14

Rather than seeing fewer teams get playoff bids in the current classification structure we have. I’d prefer to have fewer classifications. Reduce the number of classifications from 6 to 4. Classify teams based on an algorithm similar to North Carolina. The smallest classification is reserved for the least competitive programs regardless of the number of schools. Everyone else gets divided evenly in the 3 remaining classifications.

  17. I agree with this. The defense agains Union had a B+ game. Gave up a couple of throws and one long run, but that was really it. Same against Central. The only team I’ve seen move the ball on them is Grundy, and that doesn’t to appear to be as bad as we thought on week 2.

I just think 8 is too many when your 5th team is currently 2-4.....pathetic system IMO

It's probably better now than it was previously but I agree 8 is too many. I remember a time where a district winner was an automatic playoff birth and that system screwed over some really good teams. Grayson winning the old MED at 5-5 would knock out a 9-1 Glenvar or Giles. There was a pioneer district team that would always knock out a 3rivers district team too because they were in a district with lower level schools. Galax lost an all-star running back in a 1st round game a few years ago against Bland that almost sent Narrows to their 2nd State semifinals ever.

  20. I will say Tazewell has great community support for the boys. Every group of kids deserves a community that will support them in good times and not so good times. Tazewell is fortunate they have that support. I hope it continues even if Coach Harris leaves.

    So who wins 1D?

I watched Grundy play Burton last night and Scammell would start for probably for most 1A/2A teams. He follows his blocks well and has a good burst of speed along with power. I honestly was impressed with them offensively but I think if they want to make a deep run they need to play better defense. As we all know Defense wins Championships.

Truly the ugliest trophy I’ve ever seen. I’m glad the Ramey Cup doesn’t look like a cake I’d see on Cake Wars. 😂

  23. Greatest game was probably in 2015 when Richlands came to Appomattox for the 3rd game in the playoffs. Even for most of the game then Richalnds scored on a long pass and then again to go up by 14 with about 7+ minutes to go in the 4th. Appo converted a 4th down scored, scored again to tie the gameand send it to OT. In OT Richlands got the ball first and Javon Scruggs intercepted a pass in the endzone. Raiders score a TD on a play around the left side putting the ball over the pylon on the way out of bounds. Raiders win in OT 27-21 Other great games. 2017 game at Union. This game decided who would play in Salem. AWESOME atmosphere!!!!!! Appo went up 20-0 in the first half and then help off the charging Bears to win the game 23-20 I believe. 2017 State Championship Game vs R.E. LEE The Raiders played from behind most of this game and had two key injuries early that took these players out of the game. The Riaders hung tough and Javon Scruggs found a away to keep us in the game and then take the lead with just a few minutes remaining to win 38-34. 2016 District game at Dan River Dan River refused to move the game and we played in a hurricane (can't remember which one) they knew that a soaking wet field was the only way to slow down the Raiders. We won this game by 2 points. 2019 Graham comes to Appomattox Score wasn't overly close but you knew at any moment either team could make a move. Raider's win 28-13 2020 State Championship: Raiders have to go the lower seeded Stuarts Draft teams home field. This game was always led by the Raiders but Draft simply would not go away. It was fought until the final minute. Raider win 48-41 I feel very fortunate to have had a son in each of these games (sideline or on the field when older). It was an AWESOME experience with the Raiders from 2015-2020. I have 6 state rings in my house. My oldest won 15,16,17 and my youngest won 17,19,20. Raiders went 77-5 over those years, What a ride it was!

They’ll do Va High for a game for sure and Abingdon for one/ maybe two, Union vs Ridgeview is a good bet….thought they were nuts to not show Ridgeview vs. Central last year as there is a lot of bad blood and both teams were on the up…..maybe they do Central vs Union. The Chilhowie vs Patrick Henry is a safe bet……maybe Holston as well.
