You are also seeing the "If I don't play or start, then I'm not playing" mindset. Compared to years ago, kids wanted to be a part of something, even if they were going to be a junior or senior and not be a starter, they wanted to be part of a "team." That mindset is less common, so numbers are down across the country, even for some schools that could get 50 or 60 out for football. I think I counted 30 players, maybe 31 for Graham in uniform in Salem. But, the majority of those 30 or 31 could play. Numbers may be down, but the quality of the total numbers out (Richlands) is probably pretty good compared to 70 players in the past, and a good 30 of those 70 players years ago not contributing much on the field, but wanting to be a part of something which is a good thing.

That is crazy! Ten years ago they were sitting at 60 to 70 right?

Stop Union's run game, stop Union. The problem Union will face is that once it faces teams outside the region and/or Graham they will face teams with high quality DTs. A high quality DT, especially two of them, can do wonders to stop a smash mouth run-game. When RV upset a run heavy team in Central in '21 most thought it was because of RV's potent offense. That was a factor but the MVP of that game was RV's DT (Gibson..All-State DT). He dominated that game, specifically in the 4th quarter. This was the same Central team that ran all over Union but Gibson blew up about 30% of the run plays. Once RV got up by two scores, Central tried to pass which they were not good at and RV finished that team off. Graham's defense always has stout, large and athletic DTs. Union HAS to develop a competent passing game that they use repeatedly...not just on 3rd and 11 or when they are down multiple scores.

They’ve definitely dwindled in numbers the past few years. Across the board, I think a lot of schools although not as drastically as Richlands have less numbers. Kids just don’t want to put in the work and time like they used to, technology has created a lazy sedentary generation.

Just spoke with yet another Salem bud and this one an assistant. He said the scrimmage with Graham and Alleghany was Salems JV team? Said FUMA/Maury is still likely but not a definite because Maury was having issues? Just telling you what he told me.

Galax has been to nearly every state title game since they played Clintwood in 2011. Instead of making fun, they might want to figure out what Galax is doing right. We can talk about Graham, RV, Union, Richlands, and all the rest, but Galax has been the best program in the boards coverage area for well over a decade now.

Sad day in the coalfields yesterday, Larry Huff , former star player for Appalachia and father of Paul Huff was discovered deceased in Wise yesterday near the wise primary school by some hikers. He was a super athlete and good man, he had played for the Black Knights of West Point, he started on the JV team and was poised th start for the main team, he decided he would go into active duty for the Army and served for several years. Pray for his loved ones and his teammates I know that he is loved by all who knew him. Super Super guy and one of the finest QBs at Appalachia, I just hate this
