  1. Most resilient team I have ever seen. With what they've endured, they just keep winning. Neither team can be mad. They both left it all on the field. 2 outstanding football teams.

  2. We're overlooking the obvious. The Dragon Bowl trophy is Cursed! Marion claimed it first and got dragged into a hellish oblivion. Soon the Clinch will dry up, children will go feral, and cows will stop producing milk.

    Grayson at Rye Cove

I agree 100% that Cove should be hosting on their home field. That said, the ride to UVA Wise taken by Grayson will 100% be worse than the ride up the mountain Cove takes. FWIW, I don’t feel that any high school athlete should ever play on turf. I feel that way for safety reasons over competitive reasons. Grass gives even when cleats are dug in, turf doesn’t give with a rubber soled shoe…so the joint under stress gives. It’s just like limitations on cleat lengths. Most folks think that rule is in place for competitive reasons, but it’s actually in place for safety reasons. On grass, the longer the cleat, the higher the chance of lower body injury if a kid’s leg is planted and under stress. Sure they help in mud, but that’s not the main aim of limiting cleat length. Injuries still happen on grass, but most of the time the severity of the injury is limited due to the playing surface giving at some point.

  4. This is going to be controversial, and I may be dead wrong, and will take some licks, but how do you clean house with half of the fanbase, if the source is actually true and he actually resigned? Tazewell hasn't been right since Dave Litz left decades ago. Ive heard the stories about parents/fans on "wanting control" to a whole other level. I remember many years ago when Colobro had thought of coming back, but it lasted a couple of days due to once again, overwhelming fan/administrative control that is Far Beyond your normal fanbase. Something tells me much of Tazewells problems are related to nicely put, a difficult fanbase or bunch of people in town that are just far more fickle or more difficult than most others. Its been going on for not a few years, but decades at Tazewell, and whenever a portion of their fans are questioned or the topic brought up, the default isn't self reflection. Its Doubling Down. The former coach at Tazewell didnt have great discipline for his team. The new coach tried to install it, and he obviously was blocked or not supported at some level (if source is correct from initial poster.)I don't know what level. Hire the former coach again and be content with the 6-4, occasional 7-3 ceiling, and the usual 5-5. Or, hire someone that actually knows xs and os, installs discipline, have enough of the fanbase and administrators do a big self reflection and Get Out Of The Way, then you turn things around. The turning around part hasn't happened in well over 30 to 35 years, and something tells me the "Get Out of the Way" part won't happen either with this new go around. Tazewell since 1990 should be Better than they what they have been. Has a rich history dating back to the 50s. They simply should have been Better over the past third of a century. And yes, I think a huge portion of that responsibility rests on a decent size portion of the fanbase (not the entire fanbase, but large enough of a chunk of it) to make a difference.

  11. I see this matchup much like Graham’s with Glenvar last year. It was a dogfight the entire game. If Union is only down by a score on the 4th, I’d favor them especially if they have the ball last. Those young men are carrying a lot right now and playing with fire and determination to not let a situation out of their control affect their ultimate goal, that elusive state championship. With that said, Go Bears!

  12. Just going to throw some stats out for those calling Union 1-dimensional. Entering the RV game QB Kam Bostic had thrown for 1,323 yards and 19 TDs. He added to that yesterday For a power run team, this isn't too shabby. Entering the game yesterday, RB Keith Chandler had 1,631 yards and 29 TDS. Obviously, he added a considerable amount to that yesterday. For all the talk about how potent the Glenvar offense is, ours isn't exactly stagnant. Another thing that I found impressive is and we have to count playing Lee, Graham and RV 2x. 9 out of the 13 opponents the Bears have played made the playoffs. I'd doubt any team in the state could make that claim, so folks can say SOS will not matter, but I am telling you if this is close in the 2nd half, Union will win this game We have ran some serious gauntlets twice this year. In October with RV,GC,Lebanon and 3A playoff team Abingdon in a row and now getting through the nasty Graham,RV combo. This team is built to go to war.

  17. Congrats to Union. Winning is extremely difficult and certainly not as easy as they make it look sometimes. Additionally, winning consistently as they have takes so much effort, toughness, and resiliency. You are 1 of 2 remaining unbeatens in 2a...quite an accomplishment

  18. Honestly with all that we have endured and overcome so far, I just don't think it's in us to be tight. This bunch understands that this thing has become about so much more than football right now.

  22. When I was in HS it was Sept 1. The last year I had any involvement in high school football was 2004, and it was Sept 1 then, too. We had a couple of kids that barely made the cut is the only reason I remember that. It may have changed to August by now, but all I ever remember August 1 being was the first day of practice allowed.

  23. New rule this year that 1A state games must be on a neutral site and must be on turf. Crazy to me that they can stipulate that at just one level.

I have no clue how they run it now, but back in the day it was always open and you always had kids in there. On mandatory days, you always had a coach present.

  27. Not real impressed with Glenvar's strength of schedule. Their best win is either Northside or Carroll County and neither of those teams are finishing in the top three of the Mountain District. It will be interesting to see if they can stop old school smash mouth LPD style football. Union has already shown they can defeat a pass heavy team that relies on a great quarterback when they beat Lebanon. I'll take Union by 14 points.

  28. 6 of their 13 wins were against teams with winning records. 2 of those 6 in higher divisions.

  29. And only 3 teams Glenvar played this year had a winning record. 2 of those at 6-5 if my memory serves me correctly.

  30. Bluefield never surprises me. Im old. Been around too long and seen too much in Bluefield Daily over the decades and occasionally in person with Bluefield. Go back to 1960. Athletes. 1970-athletes. 2025, same Ole thing and historically, very well coached. It wouldn't shock me if Bluefield won by 2 TDs in Charleston. Now, I dont think they will. I think its close, but that bunch doesnt surprise me at all. The best historically in the coverage area. Sorry P.Valley, Appy, Graham, Giles, Radford, but Bluefield is The Model of HS excellence (over the long term) in the coverage area.

  31. But if you are going to go quicker you got to get it in other hands more too most likely. Hard to ask a kid to give you 45 carries this late in the season if you add 20 more snaps.

Before that you had Pat Swinney, Pat Johnson, Robbie Fox, Matt Stidham, Shane Tucker, etc. Imo Stidham is the best fullback to ever wear the PV uniform, but Swinney and Fox both have arguments too.

  37. But if the coaches don't trust doesnt that tell u something?..unless they're just that incompetent. QB is 28 right? That line towers over him. That's why they like those outside the number routes with him. Or they need to roll him out. He does look pretty accurate. That's the only reason I could come up with, with my limited knowledge of union. I think they have the athletes to do it more. And I'll think itll take at least 5 or 6 decent completions to keep glenvar honest
    1 point
  38. No I didn’t, I pointed out it’s silly to say there’s no way Union gets to 30+ bc of the Glenvar average abd then say it’s very likely Glenvar gets to 30+ despite Union only allowing 9ppg and hasn’t allowed a VA team to get to 30 in the same amount of time that Glenvar has held everyone under 30. Unions defense is also elite, that was my point. You’re very confident that Glenvars defense holds up but seem to believe Unions will just fall apart.

I don’t disagree, but will add part of the brilliance is surrounding himself with a great staff. I hate to dumb it down, but you mentioned lineplay. I don’t know if it’s fair to credit the feeder program as the one that feeds Union, but with the exception of the rough years between Carlock and Palmer, Graham has usually had a combination of big linemen with those athletes. I always remember them being big, even if part of it was the Carlock neck roll illusion.

  41. While the Beavers are in Charleston friday the WVSSAC should go on and award the Beavers the AA championship trophies for 2026 and 2027. They will be unbeatable in AA.

  42. Union is One dimensional And Union is Not One dimensional. Here is Unions dilemma. Yes, clearly Union has the athletes, the accurate QB and athletic WRs that can get open, can catch it, and can house it, so they are Not one dimensional in this sense. But.....will the coaches trust? Will they revert? Its all they've known is to double down when its tight and "go for the gash," even when the D is playing a near "goal line' defense. We seen Some of that today. Yes, Union through it just enough, but in my opinion, Not enough. The coaches didnt completely "double down and go all gash," but they showed glimpses of it, and that concerns me if I'm a Union fan. In 2025, Union has the athletes. They have the very very accurate QB. They can absolutely throw the ball, but will the Coaches trust? That is the question going into the Glenvar game for me. Also, the coaches are not "dumb," or "bad," for doubling down when things get tight by going all run and run some more. It is literally all they've known and what they've been taught and what they are use to. Its very very difficult to magically start doing that. Union has thrown it this season and coaches trusted the pass more, but will they maintain it when things even get more tight (probably as tight as its been all season with Glenvar)?

  43. The same thing happened with Radford in 2023. Just because Glenvar almost beat them in the Region Championship game most people on here said that Radford wouldn’t be able to handle Graham. What people didn’t realize is they’re district rivals and Glenvar has one of the best coaching staffs in 2A so of course it was a different ball game the second time they played. The atmosphere at Bullet will be something Glenvar hasn’t witnessed in many years and that’s why I’m giving Union the edge 35-31

  44. Don't let the numbers fool ya on Glenvar. The competition has been trash. If Union played who they've played, our stats would be crazy too:)

  45. People keep saying Union is 1 dimensional. They are not. Their passing game is enough for a championship level team.

  46. I think the Bears win close, but it depends on who comes from West Salem. If West Salem brings Glenvar, I like Union in a toss up game. But, if West Salem brings Grenade, the Bears are going to get messed up bad.

Phil knew how to stop the Single Wing, your mention brings back memories of the 2000 Regional Finals when I was coaching at Honaker, we just beat PV and Phil came into the coaches office , grabbed a marker, went to the board and said "here is how you beat that bunch." We implemented his rules and strategy and went on to beat them in the State Semis. If we listened to him, I can't imagine why anyone from BSG wouldn't.
